Officials Calling Our Players "boy"?

77 posts in this topic

What is this I hear about a Ref calling S. Rolle "Boy" throughout the game against the pats?

Apparently this is the reason B. Scott threw his yellow flag and got in the Refs face.

If this is true, how do you interpret it? What will be repercussions for the offending Ref?

How will this fuel the theory of the Officials handicapping the game?

-Most important of all, Will there be an Official NFL sanction investigation into the game and Officials concerned.

-Wouldn't it be safe to assume there will be, given that the Pats played atleast one game in breach of the NFL rules this season?

I was watching the NFL Network today and they said alot of promblems with the refs weather its this incident or just bad refering is that these are part time employees and that the nfl needs to hire a full time staff .but if this ref was refering to rolle as a boy he should be fined like im sure alot of the ravens players will be for the things they said about it.

The ref needs to be suspended for a lengthy amount of time, too. Assuming this is true. Which it is.

I think we're being a little too hasty...don't get me wrong though, I don't think it was in any way right for him to call Samari 'boy'.

I definitely think the NFL should look at their referees more, but no matter what the calling won't be perfect, and there will always be that one jerk of a ref. Rodney Harrison should definitely be fined, as well as Bart Scott, as much as I dislike it. Players talk a little smack to each other all the time. Getting mad over someone calling you 'boy' is pretty childish. And I honestly don't think he threw the flag because of the 'boy' comment, I think he threw it because he thought they had the stop and it turned out there was a penalty. I'd be angry too, understandable. However, he should have put that anger into the next play, to make the stop, and remove any doubt that the Ravens deserved to win the game.

Problems with the Ref's have been a CONSTANT thing for us for not only this season, but for the past few seasons......i guess you cannot find a True Ref out there to whom isnt Biased....

did i say that anywhere in what i said????....No....i was stating the fact's of the numerous penalties throughout the years....all u have to do is look and see for yourself....and you can understand the Coaches/Players anger/fustration towards each game they have palyed thus far...they feel as though, they have to not only beat their opponent but also in doing so, beat the officals of whom are SUPPOSED to be fair...which is clearly not the case......

its rediculous.....

I'm sorry but the majority of calls I have seen have been fair. Just like the holding call towards the end of the game, he held onto him for awhile. And did you notice the offensive pass interference on the last play? I don't remember who it was, but one of our players was holding down a Patriots DB from behind so that he could not jump, but a flag was not thrown, and that could have very well ended in a touchdown.

i stand by what i said earlier in the other post...the fact that.....we've had Numerous fans of OTHER teams come onto this forum and say that the Officating was completely onesided and not a fair-called ball game.........that says something to you

I stand by what I replied with, other fans commenting doesn't mean it was bad officiating. It didn't go our way, end of story. If the Ravens players honestly think it is a problem, they should simply play better to prove that the officials cannot get them down. However, I honestly do not think the officials are out to get us.

agreed it didnt go our way....BUT that being said, with other Fans coming onto this board and actually coming forward to say those kinds of statements.....means that the Ref's are clearly being (in the very LEAST) a little biased torwards us....granted we have to learn to fix our mistakes BUT penalty after penalty???????? is getting to the point of ludacris...oh wait...its passed that point in time....its madness

Could you give me some examples from, say, the Monday night game against the Patriots? I'd say the calling was fair and pretty much even.

one prime example would be the Bolller interception then afterward the Taunting of the patriots...which was clearly seen by at LEAST one offical and was seen by the commentators.......they didnt call it

Thats not technically a penalty...maybe, possibly an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty, but it takes alot to get those...like throwing the flags of a referee into the stands. Taunting happens, what do you think end zone celebrations are? Its the NFL, if you make a mistake, expect to be taunted a little. Billick knew it only made Harrison look like a fool by blowing him kisses, he made the right decision.

hmmmmmmm how can it not be a penatly when other players around the league have committed the exact same thing...and were flagged for it???????? its down right wrong if you ask me....

What about the block in the back on the Ravens defender (dont remember who) during Maroney's big catch-n-run in the 4th? That was an attrocious no-call.

However, what Raven07 I think means is that historically our team gets more bad calls against us than teams we play have bad calls against them. If you looked at a history of Todd Heap then you'd realize how many bad calls there have been against him alone. Like that TD catch against the Bengals that was ruled out of bounds (I think thats what it was). I think in the 2003-2004 it was particularly awful.

Long story short: I agree with my boy Raven07.

It's not childish at all--it has a history as a racial slur. Even of you want to disregard that because both parties are black (which I don't think should make a difference), it's a stupid thing to call a grown man, like Samari said.

It's inexcusable, especially if the refs are supposed to keep order. This is an example of a ref inciting a player, at the very least.

Mike and Mike had a big segment on it this morning around 8:20ish am (a few hours in if you want to download their podcast and hear what they said). Apparently the exchange went something like this:

Ref: <WHISTLE> Holding, defense, number 22!

Rolle: Are you kidding me? Have you ever played football before? Don't you realize what you just did?

Ref: Blah blah blah you little boy. (and apparently said boy about 5x)

Well, apparently the Ref HAD played football before, back in the 70's & 80's for a few years. So that kind of does make a difference, because as Golic pointed out, former players don't like being called out as nieve to the game because they're not. So as Golic put it, "the switch was turned on" and the Ref yelled back.

I'm not defending the ref, I'm just throwing the sequence of events out there. Mike and Mike and myself all agree that the Ref needs to be punished like the 1st base ref that called out Milton Bradley.

But how is calling him 'boy' a big deal? So it was disrespectful, why couldn't Samari ignore him? Okay so he's a washed up NFL player way past his playing days...so ignore him. If it's such an issue, take it up with the coach/league after the game, don't make a scene right there (like Scott did) and get yourself in trouble.

Oh, I agree with that. I'm not saying Samari or Bart were in the right for blowing up.

I don't agree that it wasn't a big deal, though, and this still doesn't change the fact that the league needs to do something to the ref.

Understandable. Something should be done about players disrespecting referees, and in this case a referee disrespecting players; however, we all need to stop blaming the referees for the loss Monday night. They had nothing to do with the loss. We had our opportunities and we didn't capitalize on them. I saw a pretty fair game out there, and honestly, if anything, they let some of our penalties ride. For example, the final play of the game was clearly offensive pass interference, and could have very well won the game for us.

The reason the ref calling him boy is because of the racial undertones it carries in black culture.

Regarding the reffing, yeah it was as fair as your average NFL game, a blown call here and there but you learn to live with it. What angered me about the game was the timeout the Billick DIDNT call shouldn't have counted and that Gaffney didnt have possession of the football. Even Sal Palantonio agrees with those points and he knows his stuff. Gaffney was clearly switching the ball between his hands as he went out and in the rules that means its not a completion. As Sal pointed out, its the booth reviewers fault, NOT the officiating crew. Theres a distinct difference between the refs on field and the booth reviewer.

The common definition for boy would be a young male child. Okay, true, it can be used as a racial slur, but are you serious? That's like me (I am caucasian) walking up to another white man and calling him a 'cracker'. If I were him, and someone did that to me, I would laugh. I'm sorry but for one I honestly don't think this comment had anything to do with race, and secondly I find it funny when both parties involved were African American.

You're correct in saying that Rex Ryan's timeout shouldn't have counted (only NFL Head Coaches and Players may call a timeout), but how could the referee know it wasn't a head coach? There are 32 teams in the NFL, 32 head coaches, and a whole slew of assistant coaches and coordinators. Are you telling me the referees are supposed to remember exactly what each of them sounds like on a football field with thousands of screaming fans in the stands? The referee heard a timeout, blew his whistle, and ran out onto the field. If you watch the replay of the timeout, the referee NEVER looked at Rex Ryan, which means he had no idea who called the timeout. If YOU were a referee, wouldn't you assume the person calling the timeout was someone with the ability to do so, especially if you had to watch the play at the same time?

And the call on the field was that it was a touchdown. You must have clear evidence to dispute the call on the field for it to be overturned. Believe me, when the play was being reviewed I too jumped on the 'he never had possession' bandwagon. However, the fact of the matter is that he DID have possession, he was simply pushing the ball down into one arm. If you watch, there was no bobbling of the ball or mishandling, it was simply caught and pushed down into one arm. As much as I don't like seeing it, the fact remains that it was a catch, and it was a touchdown.

no i dont expect that his days are numbered here in Baltimore....i mean he's done some great things for this team/organization. plus he has Winning record with us....(80 something wins and about 30 or 40 losses)....Billick is a great coach and i would expect us to keep him now and in the future. he's done some great things for us in the past and i feel that he will continue to do so......im a Billick supporter. i ALWAYS have been.

I must admit that I did at one point or another jump on the 'anti-Billick' bandwagon, especially after a few calls which I thought at the time were bad (mostly in the heat of the moment). However, when all is said and done, I completely agree with you Raven07, Billick is a good coach and I hope he is here to stay.

please this happens in every game by every player every week, actually this could be called after every tackle on a KO or punt return etc.... bad excuse, not biased by any point of the imagination....

Not only do I agree with you RvnInPa, but this is what I've been trying to tell everyone who's been complaining about it. What do they think an endzone dance is? Are we going to downgrade to the NCAA and start penalizing people for it? No, and that's why Brian Billick's response was, in a word, perfection.
