Rob Ryan

Any chance that we would hire Rex's brother to run our defense? Read an article on ESPN saying now that Holmgren is in charge, the coaching staff is more than likely to be fired. He runs a 3-4 defense and if anybody remembers that game against the Steelers, I would love for our D to play like that.

I really like Ryan, but if he was brought in, we'd definately need to find corners to fit his system... no more of the zone scheme Mattison seems to like

Rob Ryan is a poor imitation of his brother Rex. Rob couldn't do much in Oakland even with decent talent, whereas Rex got the most out of his players in Baltimore. Rob's arrogance may exceed that of his brother Rex's, and that would be his ultimate downfall as our defensive coordinator.

Be patient with Mattison's scheme; that patience has paid off thus far over the past month or two. These things take time -- just look at how rough Rex's start was in 2005 as the coordinator here in Baltimore.

People need to realize that we wont see a dominating suffocating defense like the 00 or 06 one until they allow more contact in the secondary, and allow more QB shots without all the no fly zones on the QBs body. Mattisons D is doing well, and besides bad games against SD and Minny our defense has basically held us in the playoff hunt this year. Defenses and players take on the roll of their coordinators, Mattison is not flashy and simply wants to limit the points an offense throws up. If we hold teams to 17 points a game, if our offense cant win us that game then our offense didnt do its job that day. All that matters is the points allowed per game, nothing else matters. If this year is any indication, once Mattison actually gets a draft that he can have some say in what players would fit his system our D will play better. Mattison is not a bad play caller by any stretch of the means either, very rarely have I seen our defense get beat on a straight play call this year. Mattison isnt flashy, but hes getting the job done all you can ask for.

How bout we get Rex after he gets fired next year *wink*

LMAO whats sanchez avg 3 interceptions per game now or what? Just a wanna be Flacco. Sanchez has the number 1 defense, number 1 rushing attack and he cant even manage the game at all.

I agree with alot of what you said. Coaching can only go so far. I think at the beginning of the season Mattison was still getting a feel for his personell, but recently it seems like some of the kinks have been ironed out. We need another serious pass rusher opposite of suggs to really have success in Mattison's scheme. Hopefully Webb is back by the beginning of next season, and we have some more talent at CB. The LB by committe thing has worked out pretty good so far, maybe one of them will pull away from the pack and claim the spot next to Ray. So going into next year if we can find another Pass Rusher opposite of Suggs and a solid CB to take Foxworth's spot and move him to nickel this defense will be deadly once more

If Rob gets fired. I wouldn't be shocked to see the Jets hire him, since he is Rex's brother.
Rex and Rob dont play the same systems. They are similiar but Rob's relies alot more on plain man coverage with LBs than Rex's does.

I think Rob is an excellent D-Coordinator, and I have to disagree Franny, that he had great talent in Oakland. He had an incredible corner who wasn't fully matured, a decent second corner and a strong young linebacker. And they had a pretty good pass defense.
Cleveland have almost no talent, especially since D'Qwell went down. And he's still put together a few very impressive performances with them.
That said, he'd still take time to break in, as we saw with Mattinson, and we don't have that sort of time, and Mattinson's D may be a little vanilla, but for a first year coach he's performed no where near badly enough to be canned.

I want Rex Ryan =(!
Isn't our team D ranked #4 in total defense? That's not shabby. Yeah, yeah. The Jets are #1. But at least our coach knows the playoff scenarios...

Maybe Holmgren makes Rob the HC for the Browns? Then both Ryans would be HC's haha lol

Wouldn't happen but it would be funny if the Bills hired Rob Ryan as a head coach.

#3 defense in the NFL...considering our atrocious start that's amazing.

The defense is fine.
Exactly they looked like they would be out of the top ten for sure. I do think they could do something about getting more pressure but yea who needs Rex Ryan!

Yes, our rush defense has been amazing. Our passing d had not been as impressive.

I've actually been VERY impressed with our pass D recently

Our rush D has been a problem too this year but the last few games they have really gotten it all together.

wow what team are u watching, did u know foxworth has been shutting it down for the past 9 weeks now.. and ur gonna say move him to nickel. i have so many post in other threads im not talking **** right now, but maybe u should go to a game and actually watch domonique foxworth very carefully. i go to every game even away and i know what im seeing from the kid. im tired of every1 bashing him and others on the team...

all i hear anymore is i want i want i want.. reciever, de, corner, blah blah blah.. what is so WRONG WITH OUR DEFENSE NOW.. WE ARE 3RD PLACE PEOPLE. IF WE PLAYING LIKE we have had in the past 8 weeks umm we would be no.1 btw we have a new coordinator, and our players are starting to feel comfortable with him.. whats ur deal jeeper. u have webb foxworth and washington next year. thats a great secondary right there.. and there only gonna get better. how bout we actually go for what we need. RECIEVER, AND DEFENSIVE END.

Matty is fine.. he is improving game after game. In fact, I like him more and more.

Washington and Webb will both be gone until at the very least midway through the 2010 season. Foxworth will keep his job not by default, but because as you stated he has played much better the past 7 weeks. We will need to address the corner position in the draft again out of need, or in FA. I really dont think the Ravens will resign Washington unless he comes seriously cheap. Maybe Ozzie will bring in a veteran via FA this year that can actually play lol.

Just as an FYI, Webb will most likely not be ready next year, or at least not ready to be back to good form.

That's not entirely true; though the injury is a serious one, it'll affect him less as a young talent than it would an older veteran. It'll still have an effect, nonetheless.

If his conditioning is great, he could recover sooner than estimated, but that doesn't mean he should be rushed back. There's plenty of time to address the situation between now and preseason, thankfully.

Thats a good point, and considering Webb is like a buck 75 his knee will have far less stress on it during rehab.

Also he's very light, so he should get better quicker from a lower body injury.
