Report: Mike Holmgren to Browns

10 posts in this topic

Via Adam Schefter's Twitter feed, former Packers and Seahawks head coach Mike Holmgren has agreed to join the Cleveland Browns as their new team president.

Given the autonomy that Holmgren is seeking, this may spell the end of Eric Mangini's run as Browns head coach. This comes a day after former Browns Hall-of-Fame RB Jim Brown publicly stated that he believed Mangini should be given another chance. The terms of the agreement has yet to be announced.

More updates as they come...

This doesn't guarantee that Mangini will be let go, but all signs point to it. Take your pick: the team's performance, the poor public relations, the grumblings of unhappy players, etc.

Additionally, Holmgren, like Bill Parcells, wants to be in control of everything -- which means Holmgren would either want to take over the coaching position himself or handpick his own coach. Holmgren has expressed a desire to return to coaching, but it may not be next season. That said, that doesn't mean Mangini is safe despite his contract; owner Randy Lerner has stated that he doesn't care how much he has to pay to build a winner, so if that means eating the rest of Mangini's contract, then so be it.

As far as the impact on the Ravens, this means that there'll be fewer former Ravens picked up, as the majority of those personnel moves were made due to favoritism in the front office -- favoritism stemming from their time in Baltimore. Phil Savage, George Kokinis, you name it. Now that the majority of ex-Ravens personnel men are gone (there's still a few scouts, I believe), there'll be fewer Ravens heading to Cleveland in free agency.

Well, unless Holmgren is enough of a draw for them, of course. But that remains to be seen...

Ditto... Seriously, the afc north is gonna be the new NFC east, and I have no problem with it.

Lol Browns get Favre as QB. Lol That'd be funny. If Holmgren is president, I wouldnt be shocked to see Favre go to the Browns.

not yet..... hopefully he will do that but it will take him at max 3 years. I saw something on ESPN that said something about how Holmgren may switch the Browns from the 3-4 to the 4-3 since that's what his Seahawks and Packers used when he was coaching. The Browns much like what Mattison did to us, would be in a situation with a bunch of 3-4 players trying to play the 4-3. If he can come in and work on Cleveland's defense be it Suh(but I think if they keep winning they will be out of the hunt to get him), Eric Berry or Gerald McCoy and put together a solid offensive line that would protect Quinn and give Harrison some blocking lanes to where he could have solid days as a RB, he'll be fine. Mangini will be around for at least 1 more year as I have heard he may keep him around as he feels its unfair to fire a coach after one season.

I really like the move given that he will be the team president and that is it. There were a lot of rumors his job role would go much deeper than that and I wasn't thrilled about that idea.

It's hard to say at this point what Mangini's future will hold but I have to believe that while Holmgren knows it's impossible to just come in with the players we had and turn it around in one year he will ultimately go with his guy or whatever the GM decides that he'll hire.
