Moral Dilemmas

13 posts in this topic

Having read a similar thread on another forum, and the recent controversy in MW2's No Russian level, I thought it would be a good idea to discuss any time a video game had you stessing about what you were doing.

GTA IV is another good example, with several times getting the choice to let someone live or killing them in cold blood.

I'm sure people are saying how in Modern Warfare 2 they had trouble
killing the innocent Russian civilians
but it seemed a little too fast paced for me to actually have trouble. And I'll admit, once I finished the game's campaign the first thing I did was play that level again.

I must be a horrible person.

Go ahead and discuss any game you like, here's some other examples:
Bioshock, Fallout 3, Dragon Age: Origin, etc.

dragon age actually had me at one in the magi origin
where your friend is accused of being a blood mage, which is supposed to be very evil magic, and you get to choose to help sneak him out, or inform the head of the tower... it had you get to know him just enough where you felt guilty if you turned him in, and it also had you so against blood magic that you felt like it was your duty to turn him in
DA:O is full of them.... especially because it doesn't have a good/bad meter its all morale choices.... you could free someone from a prison who was accused of murdering 3 people, and he become a public figure, you could also have someone who seems so good, become extremely power hungry

(note those aren't specific incidents in the game)
every choice affects the outcome of the game supposedly

in fact another good example would be the reaction the developers got for trying to produce the game six days in fallujah, the game looked to be rather promising but the fact that we are still in the Iraq war, and the use of real events seemed a bit much for the people who lost family in that firefight

I am not trying to sound tough or cold-hearted. But nothing in any video game has ever offended me and I doubt I will ever be offended by anything in a video game, cause its a GAME!

It's like what my video production teacher said about the episode of King of The Hill where Hank catches Bobby smoking, so he made him smoke a whole carton. It's funny cause its an cartoon and not real. Same applies for any game. I'm not saying shooting innocent people in that game was funny, but people gotta realize its not real and its part of a video game.

Everyone is like Oh my god, I can't believe that level in MW2, it was so horrible. Uh, you had the chance to skip any offensive content before you started the game. Everyone wanted MW2 to be an super awesome game. Well here it is and its too violent for people???? Com'n Man!!!

Mass Effect had quite a few. It wasn't all that tough to decide what to do, it basically depends which achievement your playing for, paragon (good) or renegade (evil). :P

In Fallout 3, you get to choose how good or bad your character is... if you help a lot of people, etc. you gain "Good Karma" but if you are stealing, killing for sport, etc. you gain "Bad Karma."

I'm currently debating whether or not to rescue a whole bunch of slaves from a town ironically called "Paradise Falls." My "moral dilemma" is deciding if one life (the slaves') is "worth" more than the slave traders whom I will no doubt annihilate should I decide to go on a rescue mission...

Yes, it's just a game, but teens/kids have gone out and started killing people, mimicking certain aspects of other games such as Grand Theft Auto.

Yea, forgot about Fallout 3. How about the decision to nuke an entire town or not?

yeah I know what you mean, but the way I look at the instances to see how immoral or "evil" they are is just by thinking and seeing what I would do if I was in a similar situation.... but it being a video game allows it to be much much easier to decide.....

what people don't realize is that, alot of times its like you're watching a movie, and you get excited when the protagonist pulls through and kicks some ******.... well they do the same thing with video games.... some being more in depth then others

Yeah, that too... thankfully I can quick save and "nuke" the town without consequences just to see the explosion.

Doesn't phase me in the least. It's just a game. However, there is always the scare that some mentally challenged individual will try to mimic it.
