Raven-In-ATL

State Your Defense.....

18 posts in this topic

Anyone who watched the Packers v Ravens game saw how time and time again the Packers used the tight end to make the Ravens declare that it was a Man v Man situation or Zone Coverage. Such a simple tactic that seemed to pay off every time. With Flacco not as capable of reading a defense as a seasoned quarterback any help he can get pre-snap seems like it would be welcomed. If the Ravens are as sluggish coming out of the huddle as they were that game though this will never work as there just wont be enough time on the play clock.

good observation, I hardly ever see us doing ANY motion to try to get a read on the Defense. it seems like Joe makes his mind up where he wants to go before the snap regardless of coverage and if he has enough time to check it down, he goes there. If the checkdown is covered...then you get the result of the packers game.

Great call noticing that. All great QB's make a pre-snap motion some time or another, as obviously it gives a bigger advantage of knowing the coverage.

It would be a lot easier to do if we had a Jermichael Finley on the roster.

So you cant check coverage unless you have Finley? Guess Green Bay got lucky they got the only TE in the NFL that can go in motion.

I agree with all points posted. It also would't hurt to have some 4-wideout sets to spread the field.Green Bay spread us out and exposed our corners and we all saw how that worked,if it wasn't completed it was a PI call, plus those slant routes were killers. We have enough receivers on the sideline that don't even get in the game, what are they saving them for?Talent and skill level aside this is the time to pull out all the stops, leave it all on the field, and let the rest take care of it's self. We've got to find that sense of urgency that didn't make the trip to Green Bay!

I remember the game announcers talking about this. They brought it up.

As for us not running it I think we do a lot of motion. Rice for example lines up in the backfield then motions to the outside often. What we do a lot more that motion is we shift. We come out and setup in one formation than multiple players shift to a completely different position.

IMO we do plenty of presnap movement and that is partly to blame for all our presnap penalties (false start, illegal formation etc.)

That seems more like an attempt to catch the defense off guard than to read it. Check this scenario. Cam calls the play. TE in motion. Defense is read looks like this play will work. Go with it. or Defense check shows not such a good call after all. Now you move Rice or whoever to a new position to take advantage of a bad call by the opposing defensive coordinator. Either way at least the odds are tipped in our favor by some margin. Its like playing Madden and never using audibles when you realize your about to get worked over by a bad play call.

I dont appreciate the sarcasm there, hoss. The point is valid. The guy is 6'5, 250 with WR-like speed... you can line him up anywhere you want and he'll create a mis-match. We dont have a player on this roster that can do that. Even if we did, what are we going to do?.. split out Heap when their pass rush is already getting to Joe before any route could possibly develop?... If we couldn't block them with 6, how do you expect to block them with five?

Ok hoss before you lose sleep no one was talking about mismatches. I'm talking about putting a man in motion period. Any NFL player with two legs should be able to go in motion and return to his original assignment. Your point might be valid but on a different thread.

Alot of defenses though can disguise that coverage by simply letting him go or following him even if its a zone depending where he motions out to. If it was that easy to find the coverage on every pass play, then every team in the league would motion guys out on pass plays to figure out the coverage. It does work, but in small doses.

I agree to some extent but as far as doses go we got a healthy dose of it in the Packers game.
