Will Issues Really Get Fixed In The Off-Season?

24 posts in this topic

Alright guys as all of you know we never seem to get key issues fixed in the off season...we never seem to want to sign key free agent players that out there do you think this off season will be differant or will we come back next season with a mason less offense and some rookies?

I really think there will be a lot of change this off-season. The team is already in transition right now and there are far too many holes that need to filled for management to just sit back. They need to use FA AND the draft to address the receiver, tight end, d-line and CB positions.

As for Mason, I hope he doesn't retire but I wouldn't be surprised if he does. I'll miss him...

That simply isnt completely true. We do try to fill holes. Why do you think we brought in McNair, Flacco, Mason, Pryce, even tried to trade for TO?
To answer your question, it depends on the sam thing it always has....will the right people be available at the right price?

I don't know if we'll fix our problems in the sense that we'll have long term solutions, but I do believe that history will repeat itself and we will have a good year again. It's always up and down for this middle of the pack team.

Now whether that will be because we've actually improved, because we get lucky, or because we face an easier schedule remains to be seen.

Rebuilding is never fun but this isn't baseball where it takes years to become competitive after keys players retire or simply get old fast.

While the Ravens have holes, they have building blocks in key areas too. I firmly believe you can build a offense around Flacco, Rice, the young o-line and a defense around Ngata, Ellerbe and Webb.

ozzie needs to stop playing it safe & bring in some big time players
[/quote]

It's hard to do when not many are available, trades rarely happen in the league and it really hasn't brought any other team much success. The best team are the ones built in the draft.

I think we really need a WR before anything. We have some solid players on defense that haven't gotten a chance to play yet. I think everybody can easily point to the QB or the offensive line because that's where the camera is when Flacco is about to throw the ball. It isn't always their faults. What they don't show is how our WR's can't get seperation from CB's.

We never want to fix issues? Did you not watch this past offseason? I think our FO tried rather aggressively to fix what THEY believed were problem areas for this team.

For everybody calling to bring in a big name free agent, what young guy do you want to lose in the next 3 or 4 years because we cant bring in superstar players AND keep our own developing talent?

That's what certain fans don't want to think about. They want guys like Marshall and V-Jax but don't stop to think about what it will cost the team to bring in those guys. Whether it's signing them in the off-season or trading for them, those guys are worth 10+ million in today's NFL meaning you won't have money for other positions.\

I think Ozzie is trying to build a team that can compete for a title every season and not that compiles a few FAs and gears up for Super Bowl "runs".

Forget the Steelers, look at the Colts. They're in the hunt every year and it's entirely with players they draft. Sadly, Ozzie has missed on a few selections in the past few years but he's also found several building blocks too.

Its not like it hasnt happened here before. In 2004, we went out and got Mason, Rolle, and I think thats the year we signed Pryce as well. Two years later we lost Thomas and Tony Pashos. This past offseason we lose Jason Brown and Bart Scott. Thomas, Pashos, Brown, and Scott are all at different points in their careers right now but they've all got 4 years or more left in them. All 3 of the guys that ate the cap space we would have used to re-sign them have 1 foot out the door. Rolle is done. Mason was almost done this past offseason and Pryce isnt nearly as good as he once was.

People want these big name guys but what happens if a guy like Webb, Ellerbe, Zibby or some other young thats not CLEARLY on his way to being top notch right now turns out to be top notch like Jason Brown did?

werd. we make one big mistake and we are screwed for a long time. Look at the Redskins. They have so much money tied up in a DT, RB, and CB they cant possibly go out and get a QB. They probably cant even afford to draft one in the top 5 if they end up there.

The thing is the issues we needed to address and thought we (they rather) addressed fell through. I think it's more fairly obvious what our needs are. Unfortunately there are plenty of them to address.

DE/Tackles -Pass rush
DB/CBs - enough said
WRs - no need to address this
TEs - can't have Heap do all the TE work.
O Line man - some to step up and give Flacco more protection.

The issue will be how they will address these matters in the offseason.

The REAL issue they better fix is the penalty issue. That's a discipline matter entirely.

for those who say they dont fix the holes they may bring in players but they dont finish they brought in flacoo, besides rice who they got the same year as flacoo what have the done for him oher is nice but that doesnt help him when they games on the line and he needs a moss or fitzgerald type of player, personally i belive trade for a big name reciver thats semi young, maybe somehow trade with the lions for calvin johnson or like bryant from the bucs, and then draft a wr and a cb in the draft. as for mason i wish he wouldnt retire he is such an amazing player and DEFINTLEY one of the most underated wr in the game, i wish he wouldnt retire either atleast for one more year and if he doesnt hoopefully we can get to a superbowl for him would like to see him win one or atleast play in one he deserves it.

That's a good point.Look at their receivers Collie and Garcon.I was like, who?Found out fast, sure it helps to have Manning on the other end but there are those "sleepers" out there, question is can we find some?

Chris Carr and Foxwortheless are both quite young. As hard as it may be, I'll take those losses if it brings Dwayne Bowe. In fact, I'll take those losses if it brings Chad Pennington.

When I watched the Redskins play the Saints, I was reminded of the '07 Ravens playing the Patriots. They were clearly an inferior team, but they played their hearts out.

As I watch the Ravens this year, I'm reminded of the Redskins. One begins to wonder if they realize their playoff lives are about to end because they don't act like it.

this is exactly why people have this "we dont address our issues" mentality.
here, let's play a game. I'll be Ozzie, you be Detroit's GM.

Ozzie: I want Calvin Johnson. What do you want for him?

DET GM:

Now, fill in the blank. What do you think they'll say? I'll even make it easy for you and give you a hint. It will go something like this....

"Get the ---- out, you stupid -------"

There, now you only have two blanks to fill in. Let me know if you figure it out. :)

Will thisbteam be fixed in the offseason? In their kinds yes, to us...probably not. We'll never be satisfied... But I'll throw my two cents in.
WRs are dependent upon a qb to throw to them. Joe has some work to do but I think he's gonna be fine in the long run. The more of a repoir he can develop with whoever his receivers are the better this team can be. A big, fast #1 yow receiver would be awesome, but I still think we can get the job done with "serviceable" types of WRs. CB on the other hand is a position where youn are on an island and often no one a helping you. This is where you need to maximize your talent. But first and foremost, in this league you must protect your qb, and our young qb has seen so much pressure coming directly in his face it's unbelievable. I think next year our first priority is a center. Bork is not getting the job done, and it almost seems like the perimeter of the line has to cheat inside to help him which, in turn, is opening a lot ofnthese edge rushers coming at flacco from all angles.
Center
Cornerback
DE
Wide receiver
Left guard

That's how I see it.
