Purple Punishment

Demetrius Williams

44 posts in this topic

So I watched last nights game in total shock. Now that that shock is over, I would like to discuss Demetrius Williams. I jumped up out of my seat 2 times last night due to his ability to beat CBs deep!!!! He beat them and drew the pass interference calls! What more do he have to do when he hits the field to get playing time? Im not completely certain but was he playing in the #1 Receiver spot when he drew those calls? For some reason I feel strongly in my heart that our #3 and #4 receivers really want to be on the field more than our #1 and #2. I think it is owed to D Will to give him more playing time as he clearly got us into a position to score points, whether he made a reception or got the P/I call. When will our coaches see this and give the man a damn chance instead of letting him waste away on the pine, making him feel like hes our weakest receiver?

He probably is our weakest overall receiver but he also might be our best deep threat. I see your point though. But i have to believe that the coaches who see him in practice know more about him and the depth chart than we do. But he probably is our best deep threat and that is something we definitely need: someone capable of stretching the field on occasion.

You think Williams wants to be on the field more than Mason? <_<

I agree though that Williams should see the field more. He might not have seized his opportunity in camp and pre-season but the receivers playing ahead of him simply aren't getting with consistency.

I don't wish to see anyone get hurt but if Clayton's hamstring keeps him out next week, it could force the coaching staff to see what they have in Williams.

Whether he was matched up against Woodson or not I don't recall. But I can tell you that while he was out there D-Will was on the outside while Clayton was in the slot.

Are the coaches reading our posts on these boards?! If so, I sure hope they noticed the same things you and I did, because D-Will did WORK on the outside last night, despite only being targeted twice, and not even catching a pass. He ran the right route, beat his man both times, and was in the right place to make a play on the ball where the CB couldn't (hence the PI calls). And if you didn't notice, he almost snagged the one in the endzone with his left hand while the CBs forearm was in his facemask.

Edit - Although it is a little worrisome that Flacco likes to throw the jump ball to Williams because of his height, and that led to the int. in the endzone at the end of the game.

Besides Mason beating Woodson deep the one time, everytime D-Will went deep I knew he had Tramon totally burnt. Harbaugh would have to be a moron to not starting to play some of these guys and send a message to other. Why Williams has been on the bench all year long is beyond me. D-Will is tall and fast and has the ability to win jump balls and gives us an option to actually throw fade routes in the redzone. Barnes needs to start playing on 3rd down and long on the Dline. Mattison actually moved Pryce inside last night which Ive been begging for and Pryce got a sack and 2 other QB pressures from what I saw. We need to start running stunts and twists on our Dline if we want to get pressure, and either Ngata beats a 1 on 1 block one time in a pass rush or get his ****** off the field. Your 350 pounds and athletic, stop getting wiped out at the point of attack by a G who weighs less than you.

Williams played he got separation. Clayton played and did nothing. Give Williams a shot playing next to Mason.
[/quote]
At times this season and last it has been hard to differentiate between Mason and Clayton. Two guys who have lost a step and are of equal size. Probably the biggest problem with the offense this season has been having two identical receivers. At this stage Clayton needs to sit and Mason needs to be a possession guy with Williams and KWash as deep and intermediate threats respectively. There is nobody who plays consistently who can stretch the field. When that is the case teams can focus on shutting down Rice and with a decent corner can slow down Mason and Clayton and with a good corner (Woodson) can make Mason invisible. The games I've been to this season there have been a couple occasion each game (KC and @NE) where Flacco has loaded up to throw deep and has to wait for his guy to get there or pulls it down because there is no separation. DWill was a breath of fresh air in that respect last night and really stood out physically if not on the stat sheet. They really need to try him out more and see what they've got with him

D-Will aka Spiderman needs to get more reps with the first team. There's a reason we spent a 4th Round pick on him. He's got the speed and the hands, now he just needs the playing time and the experience that goes along with it.

Demetrius Williams definitely needs to see more time. Even though anyone can beat anyone, the Lions would be a good team to break him out against.

I remember the hugh PI call that Williams forced in the end zone but for all the praise we are giving the guy, did he even have an official catch?

2 Pi calls blocked catches and Flacco underthrew him when he got open in the endzone for an INT

nope, but the PI calls pretty much show that had he not been interfered with he would have had the opportunity to make the catch.

Nope.

Nobody exactly lit it up in that department. How many targets did he have besides that PI in the EZ? He just looked good out there, like he could run by someone or jump over them if needed. Had Flacco thrown that INT to the back corner of the EZ and let Williams chase it he may have had a TD

I find it hard to put so much faith into a coaching staff that refuses to not only acknowledge Clayton is not starting material, but refused to play Kruger when the other LB were underplaying, and kept putting Carr and Walker on the field when we had Webb who was playing well, on the bench.
So...sorry, the "coaches know best" argument doesn't fly.

Agreed. Our coaching staff has taken a big step back.

WILLIAMS SHOULD HAVE BEEN STARTING ALL ALONG. with his athletiscm and size and speed. how can u not play him. i dont like harbaugh nor do i like mattison, there coaching experience is way below standards. i hope we make some changes. and i have a bad feeling our coaches will be here next year and there gonna rebuild us due to the fact its harbaughs team.

god i hope ray is talking to bischotti and ozzi..

ozzi knows whats needs to be done. im sure of it

As soon as the Ravens give this guy more than 3 plays a game... he'll get injured.

But hey, as long as he's able to go, I have no problem playing him.

But I would NEVER say he's better than Mason.

Why would the team get rid of the coaches? They've made several poor decisions this year but a lot of things have happened that were completely out their control.

Their starting QB is dealing with several injuries, the back-up RB dances in the hole, both TEs on the roster are walking injuries, the interior o-line isn't getting a push, injuries have decimated the defense and many of the other players shouldn't be on an NFL roster.

The team is obviously in heavy transition as far as the players go, so why would management change the coaching staff?

i feel like when d will is healthy he should get playing time but i would go as far as to say he needs to start. i think we need to make use of the 4 wrs that we have.

I think D Will shouldnt be situational like they do to K Wash. I mean this guy touches the field on a passing play that he doesnt have a blocking assignment on, the ball is headed his way. At this stage he is more of a threat on the deep ball than Derrick Mason. No disrespect to D Mase...

Its really no disrespect to Mason its a shame that Mason needs to be covered by a HOF type CB like Woodson just to be taken out of the game where as Clayton can be covered by any CB in the NFL and be taken out of the game.

I'm pretty sure there is a good reason why he doesnt start
One would proabably being his skinny toothpick arms are of no use in run blocking

I've been wondering where DWill has been at all season! I think the way the staff is seeing it, putting them in there NOW can't hurt us. Imagine how much heat would've been taken away from Mason, and other receivers just by putting DWill in there?

I know, I was just pointing out that had Flacco made a smarter throw where Williams could have laid out where there was no defender he may have had a TD. Flacco tried to put it in his facemask throught the hands of a defender and we saw the result. I think he should be out there a lot more next week and see if he can stretch the field a little

Yeah because he is definitely beating the men sticking him when he plays

I just know we are going to release him when the season is over. In Harbaugh I trust?
