We Need A Posting Limit On Making Threads!

31 posts in this topic

There are about 20 new threads in GD and they were all started by people with less than 5 posts. We need a post limit to keep the trolls from starting new threads. Force them to make their first post in an existing thread, atleast then you'll have a chance to really check them out and see what they are all about first. I think 50 posts before you can create a new thread is reasonable.

Just a thought.

The new threads that drive me crazy are:

"I had a dream last night......"
and
"I just had a thought......"

This can fit 100% into another thread.

I agree 100% with this. Will this get done?

I agree. Setting a minimum post limit before being able to create a new topic would help by (1) forcing Rookies to see how things work here for a while and (2) reducing troll-generated topics.

Sounds like a great Idea! Nothing annoys me more than people signing up only after the Ravens just had a tough loss to create a million "fire harbaugh/mattison" threads.

I still remember when I started I didn't want to make any threads because I felt I had to prove I wasn't just a new guy trying to be heard.I just chimed in with current threads,we do get alot of threads(and a ton of what if,or predict scenario's)lately.they can be fun but also kind of annoying, when you have the same one 3 or 4 lines down.

I agree, Great Idea. Yeah but see what annoys me more than the ones that come in here demanding Harbs gets fired is the ones from fans of opposing teams that come in and just say whatever and say something big, and we wind up never hearing from them ever again. Remember the whole arguing with the Bills fan over Gaither and how he joined just to be a troll? It would also prevent arguments like that and make the Mods life much easier along with everyone else.

I would say someone needs 100 or 400 posts before making a new thread, that way we can determine what they are doing on here and what there plans are, this weeds out the people signing up just to say Harbs needs to be fired; an opposing fan like the Bills fan from showing up just to troll and than they just u and close the account and is never heard of again.

I also think to there has to be a way to determine posting in a normal thread and joining in a discussion and posting just to get your posts total up so you can post something.

We've been discussing this for some time now and I think a proposal of 25 posts would be prudent.

If you think about it, it takes a lot of time to come up with 25 quality posts; if someone is free-posting with one-word or one-sentence posts, it gets to be a bit obvious and we Mods are allowed to remove any such instances, according to our policy. To sit down and type 25 posts is not an easy task in one day, especially if you consider that the top posters only average maybe 10 posts a day, according to our statistics -- and that's being generous.

The only exception to this would be Game Threads, but we're considering exploring whether we can have Game Thread posts NOT count towards post count (similar to how deleted posts aren't counted).

I did the same thing. I also didn't want to look like the idiot that reposted a thread and I still don't which is why I've started like 5 threads the whole time I've been a member. I do kind of like when new people make stupid threads. Negatives are so fulfilling to give. Which is why I am frustrated there is a limit of negatives you can give, but I understand why there is a limit.

I would have to say that I'm very much in support with this idea. Regular posters post close to 5-10 posts a day, but newbies post near 2-5 a day, at least thats what I've noticed in my own experience and also in observing new posters. 25 is the limit I'd place on this, as it'd give us 5-10 days to observe a poster's tendencies before we let them run loose. Only thing I don't like is the fact that they can be acting good while we're restricting them, and still misbehave once we let the leash go. Another counterpoint would be that its much easier to catch trolling if they post the thread first. What if a thread is ongoing and a troll steps by and says something off the wall and it isn't caught until much later?? To me, it seems a lot easier if they make the thread themselves in order for them to caught. A third point is that, well 'I', like to flame on a troller or someone who just posts to down our team regularly. That is fun to watch us unite and go all out on them. But hey, thats just me.

All in all, I'd say this idea is good. We should just be careful that they don't start posting random posts in threads that aren't being monitored closely.

I'm looking forward to the upcoming season on the board. After our first win, we'll be having Superbowl threads left and right. Then after two losses in a row, it'll be - fire Harbaugh, has Ozzie lost his touch?, etc.

^^^^^^^ :doorpeek: v and then :throwcomp: which leads to :th_padded:

Seriously though what usually happens is we merge the like post and that annoys people too, I do believe some believe there is an award for starting the most post-- which there is not.
We love the enthusiasm with posting and everyone's thoughts are welcome.

I am looking forward to my first season on this forum. I will be one who doesn't post needless threads like 'fire Harbaugh' or 'whats wrong with the team' if we lose a couple of games. But I'll certainly comment( not neccessarily start threads) if we start losing more than 10 games, which is very unlikely but who knows with injuries.

I think that 25 posts gives us a good picture of the prospective thread-starter. If it's clear that the person is mean, unoriginal, ignorant etc. then his waiting period should be extended.

I'm all in favor of this idea.

If I see another Jets/Ravens thread before the post-season... I think I may hurl.

The posting limit's already in effect, though users who registered before the limit was put in place were grandfathered in. That's why you'll see the occasional thread started by members with less than the limit.

That doesn't stop regular users from putting up repetitive threads, though. -_-

We need a limit on bumping up old, tired dead threads.

If it's old and dead, why keep it in the first place? For posterity?

I kind of agree with this.

Don't you folks prune old threads around here?

Yep all it does it take up space, I mean people could probably go to like Pages 10-last page on the Ravens Talk thread and pull up something from like 2006-2007 that says how Billick deserved the contract extension... and the guy who found it could wind up saying like.... "hey remember this thread..." and find some way to tie it to Harbs and stuff. Maybe the Mods could go through and clear threads that are older than 3 or 4 years to make the board cleaner and we keep things relevant to the present day instead of people bumping a 3 year old thread for no reason.

If the mods delete threads than posts will go away as well. Pretty sure people would prefer to have the old threads hang around instead of losing their post counts. The best option would be to individually close each thread. Which is a tough task with this bunch who starts threads with every idea or thought.

I think the general idea is that people would just leave old threads to rest, but then you always have the occasional bonehead who doesn't know any better.

We've discussed options such as creating an archive section to merely move threads, but that's a lot of stuff to migrate all at once, which would be a strain on the servers. It's something we'll continue to explore.
