Wr Situation Next Season

55 posts in this topic

Just wanted to share my concern about the WR situation next year if mason retires and we get a young guy in the draft and we resign clayton and wash what the hell are we goin to do? or do you think we pick up a WR in FA i just dont see any guys that will stand out in FA right now that we can afford to get without losing a first round pick. theres no way we will survive next year with clayton at number one i lose sleep at night thinking about that.

Well they are going to get Marcus Smith in the mix when he comes back from his injury. I hope they bring in a WR and maybe draft one depending on the prospects.

i have a dream...

We sign Brandon Marshall in FA aswell as Tony Scheffler to be our pass catching TE
We then go into the draft and draft Dez Bryant in round 1, Mike Williams in round 4 (round 1 talent) and become unstopable on offense. Then Mason will come out of retirement as he knows we will win the Superbowl so now we have this as our WR depth

1 - Brandon Marshall
2 - Dez Bryant
3 - Derrick Mason
4 - Mike Williams
5 - Kelly Washington
6 - Marcus Smith/ Justin Harper

Add that to the fact we have Scheffler and Heap at TE and Ray Rice at RB. WOW! Talk about scary

However it is just a dream....

you wouldnt have to give up picks for free agents.

its all about who is available after the re-signing period is up, and what kind of contract they're looking for. I definately think we'll take at least one receiver in the draft this year, even if its not a first day pick.

Brandon Marshall is definitely a possibility. I like Vincent Jackson better though. He has never caused any type of problems in SD. True Class Act

Damn, a true fan loses sleep over WR concerns at night to be serious. All that aside, B. Marshall, V. Jackson, unhappy WR's like Steve Smith. Like stated above we still have Marcus Smith. Cant forget about the still learning Justin Harper, and Eron Riley. I honestly dont see Clayton ever being higher on the depth chart than #2 or slot would be perfect. Washington has yet to be tested on routes that the #1 receiver should handle before even being considered.

I can see us signing a FA WR for next season and drafting a WR (somewhere in the top 3 draft picks). I can also see us looking at 6 WRs for next season. A lot of things will be dependent on if Mason retires or not. Who knows for now.

So making a list of WRs we could have for the 2010 PRE-SEASON:

FA
Mason (career dependent)
Clayton
K. Washington
M. Smith
J. Harper (PS promotion)
Draft
E. Riley (PS promotion)

Possibles or Doubtfuls (depending on your view point)
D. Tyree
D. Will

Sign V Jackson or B Marsall if possible, resign clayton and washington, draft Jordan Shipley in in the 2nd or 3rd round. With the potential for Mason returning for 1 more season...

1. Jackson/Marshall
2. Clayton (or Mason if he returns, bumping everyone down)
3. Washington
4. Shipley
5. Smith/Riley/Harper

I dont see SD or Denver not giving there guys a deal after the seasons they have both had im really pulling for marshall i just dont see him testing the market he seems happy where he is now.

IF DMase decides to hang'em up after this season, I say we look west, to snag someone like Anquan Boldin (who's dissatisfied in AZ.) if we can get him without being gutted in the draft, or maybe even Chris Chambers - who will likely want to get out of KC. They can provide veteran leadership and mentor the younger guys. A pipe dream would be to work a deal with Detroit for Calvin Johnson who has to be feeling useless in Detroit - note, I said this is a pipe dream and highly unlikely, sadly.

As I see it, our task to bring in a true #1 WR because the Cowboys basically destroyed the market as a result of the asstastic deal they made to bring Roy Williams from Detroit to Dallas - a first, third and sixth round pick. And he's been a bust. I think GMs are going to lord that over trade partners in the future.

Right now, our best prospects are in the draft: trying to snag Arrelious Benn out of Illinois or Eric Decker from Minnesota. Benn has speed, height and good hands in a #1 receiver mold, while Decker could become our version of Wes Welker, or the second-coming of Brandon Stokely, but faster.

Joe Flacco > Kyle Orton

Joe Flacco can go down-field, Orton can't unless there's a broken coverage. Marshall's numbers skyrocket if he comes here, which means more $$$.

There's no dream scenario where Denver lets Scheffler go. Period.

I personally could see Marshall getting out of Denver, but I don't see Scheffler going anywhere. I doubt we will draft Dez Bryant only because I don't see our first round pick going towards a WR. There is no way Mike Williams would be drafted by the Ravens. He quit on his team mid-season, which in my opinion is inexcusable. He isn't a Raven at heart and he has some red flags. He certainly is talented though. I could see us going after someone like Decker, in the mid-rounds. He is a great route-runner with amazing hands. I think he is definitely a Raven at heart imo and I would love to have him on our team.

While he hasn't been the problem child Marshall is, V-Jax did have a DUI earlier this year.

I'd much rather see this team draft a receiver. The receiver class is going to very talented next year. And anyone of the top receiver's will want money in the 10 million range. To me, the team has way too many other holes to tie up that much money in a receiver.

I just can't see the Broncos letting Marshall go unless he has another off-the-field incident, in which case, he'll get a LONG suspension.

And Dez Bryant will be long gone in the second round unless he performs terribly on all fronts at the Combine.

I agree that was just a dream i had hahah but if mason comes back one more season and he does have plenty left in the tank and we do somehow get marshall the offense will be explosive next year with another year under rice and the offensive line man i see great things if we can get a huge playmaking wr our of FA.

I'd rather keep Clayton than getting the 2 drop machines known as T.O and Braylon Edwards.

keep an eye on V. Jackson and B. Marshall... SD has a lot of talent they need to resign that will become F.A. this year.... if Merriman and Jackson are both unsigned going into the F.A. period.... they can only franchise tag one.... and frankly with the Marshall situation... if the bronco's have a finish like they did last year those issues will reappear

agreed....
T.O is going to be the locker room cancer with less talent... A LOT less talent, and edwards will most definitely be resigned by the jets for what they gave up for him

T.O. had his chance to be a Raven and passed, just to go to Philly and throw McNabb under"the bus!"The best fit for him is anywhere but Baltimore. We don't need that drama playing out the first time he doesn't get a ball thrown to him and why would anyone want him around Joe Flacco? There will be much better choices out there who will "Play Like A Raven."
