Flacco: Is Ball Security A Problem?

36 posts in this topic

Of course it's way too early to tell for certain, but some RB's tend to fumble and some QB's have issues with ball security.

Are we watching a tendency developing? or was it the poor pass protection tonight? Maybe those who were at the game can give some insight to this question.

Pass protection has been questionable for weeks.

No question! Also, stripping the ball is becoming a bigger part of the game all over.Even, though not in this case,at the expense of tackeling.

Pass protection was the biggest problem tonight, especially against Harrison and Woodley, at least none were returned back for touchdowns! Overall this has been the first time in many weeks I have been pretty happy with the play calls, hope we can take some of this mojo to Green Bay next week!

I do think he needs to start getting rid of the ball faster and be willing to throw it away, especially if he is feeling rush pressure.

Its kind of hard for him to do that though when our recievers are still running thier routes and havent had a chance to look back yet.

You can't just "get rid of the ball faster", there has to be a receiver there to catch it or at least get into a position that allows you to not get pegged with an intentional grounding flag. And by the same aspect, you have to get out of the pocket to be able to throw it out of bounds to avoid the same flag. Both of those ideas still need some time to allow either the quarterback to get outside the pocket or receivers to get into a position to help out. What does all of that reflect upon? Pass protection.

However, I would not call ball security an issue for Flacco. The fumble on the sack tonight had nothing to do with Flacco, the ball was swatted out of his hand as he was going to pass.

You can get rid of the ball faster if you are willing to throw it away. With his arm strength he can throw it away any time he likes and not get intentional grounding if there is anyone near a sideline. All he has to do is throw it out of bounds to whichever side has a receiver running a sideline route. If there is nobody out along either sideline, which is a low % of passing plays, then you are correct.

And if there are no receivers ready to receive after a 3 step drop, then maybe your plays have too long routes? To your point, I think if the D is getting too much pressure, then they need to be able to go to quick 3 step drop plays, etc. Not adjusting the play calling is more of a coaching problem than a QB issue though.

Flacco is also playing hurt--I could not believe the tape job on his plant ankle. It is slowing him down and he got rolled up on tonite.

Flacco stated ankle hasn't been a factor in his throws. Ball security is always a factor when playing the Steelers. They have an easier time getting to the quarterback with Woodley and Harrison than most teams.

nah, its not like hes running around out there waving it at the defense. On both the fumbles he had NO TIME to do anything with the ball and no space to scramble. Our line was just manhandled.

2009

Joe Flacco - 5 fumbles, 1 lost fumble

Tom Brady - 4 fumbles, 2 lost fumbles

Big Ben - 5 fumbles, 2 lost fumbles

Aaron Rodgers - 8 fumbles, 3 lost fumbles

Philip Rivers - 6 fumbles, 3 lost fumbles

--

I fail to see the point you are trying to make here. We don't have any ball security problems.

Good post, I was just about to see how Flacco compared to other QBs in the league. Thanks for doing it for me!

No problem. I essentially sit at work for 8 hours a day, look at football stats and dirty pictures of my girlfriend.

That was a mean pass rush, Joe did a solid job overall. He does need to just tuck it or chuck it sometimes.

On a side note - my frustration with receivers not named Mason is boiling over. Is it Joe's fault or the wideouts? Where did Kelly Washington go? Cause I haven't seen him lately. Is LJ Smith on the team still? Don't get me started on Demetrius, let alone Clayton.

Pass protection. The fumble was happened because of a missed block, he didn't feel the guy in the pocket and that sort of thing happens sometimes. Flacco took a lot of shots tonight and a couple of nights before for that matter but he's tough and manages to hold on to the ball. So I am not mad one bit. Everyone is saying that they were missing Worthlessberger and Troy Polamolu but we were missing T-Sizzle and Foxworth. The guys we had stepped up tremendously and it was up to their team to do the same and may the best guy win. I can honestly say that the Steelers 3rd string has no reason to feel down on himself because he did a tremendous job and he did everthing that Rothlisberger would have done if you ask me.

you know i said the same thing during the game minus the Kruger int(which who knows he might have gotten Ben to)it looked like a steelers/ravens game.Ben was coaching him the whole time he was equipped with walkie and all(most likely hooked to the on helmet speaker)Dixon played great and for Steeler fans to say we won because Ben was out is a disrespect to Dixon.

Exactly and they have a great mobile QB. He definitely opened a lot of people's eyes with that performance yesterday including ours. Now, I just want to know if that was good or bad for us. Reason being, if we would have known he was mobile we probably wouldn't have called the blitz without some type of protection on the flats, but that would also open the door for more rushes because they would have played conservative to respect the bootleg which could have turned into a tragedy for us. Not having any film to watch on this guy may have been beneficial and unbeneficial. COMMENTS??

Maybe he needs to start wearing gloves...he does hold the ball to long and against team like steelers that is recipe for diaster...lastnight his drop was right into the steelers pass rush his internal clock needs to go off alil quicker its also due to the fact that he isn't blessed with the best wideouts

Joe did play very well, but something is off in terms of his pocket awareness. The top-tier QB's (Manning, Brady, etc.) can feel the rush and slide or step up in the pocket, but Joe seems to react late and it's getting him hurt and other teams are forcing turnovers.

its gonna take awhile for him to figure that out, but he's not doing as bad as the first few games last year when he held the ball WAY too long and fumbled several times. At least he's standing tall in there. You can sidestep a pass rusher, but when you've got 4 of them collapsing the pocket from all sides, thats when you see the likes of Manning and brady go down on their own and wait for someone to touch them ;)
