Maybe We Should Run The Wildcat Sometimes?

21 posts in this topic

I'm not talking about the Suggs package. I mean something like the Dolphins run. We have 3 good backs in Rice, McGahee and McClain. This way we can get all of our RBs involved in the game. Also this will make us run the ball more and take some pressure off of Flacco.

Cam seems to only use trick plays in games against "poor" teams.

Part of me says the team might need to break out some trick plays because the current offensive system isn't working or players aren't executing. However, if the players can't move the ball in the regular offense, it probably wouldn't help to start trying new things, especially in such a crucial part of the season.

sorry to ask.. but why's it called suggs package anyway
[/quote]

Suggs wanted Troy Smith to get some more playing time last year and in a way, the team obliged.

To elaborate on what EdReed20 stated.

Suggs went on his weekly radio saying that Troy Smith should be starter. This created a big controversy. But then Flacco really started to come on strong. They decided to include Troy Smith in on plays, which became the "Suggs Package."

The rest is history.

I think Cam lacks confidence in himself or the players to try them with better teams.

YESSSS! Get Troy Smith on the field! Let's give the opposing defenses something to actually think about!

I believe this package has been successful 1 time with Flacco getting a TD reception. Other than that, Smith has only broke off for small yardage in his attempts.

Joe showed good hands on that play last season and then "poof" it's gone.Didn't I hear murmering and rumors of the Ravens intrest in Mike Vick?I could only sit here and ask if you wanna go that route, forget Vick,Troy is the man to try it with. While unquestionaby Joe is the man,the future rides on him and that's not a bad thing at all!Troy is a good all around athlete, and you now he wants on the field and to really contribute, especially now!Eventually you know he's gonna want to start and he'll get that chance but we all know that it won't be with us,some other team is gonna write him that big check but until that day comes,it would be interresting to see defenses watch us break the huddle and see such an un-Raven like formation. Confusion could lead to a big play or at least an air of unpredictability that would force them to think, adjust,or have to burn a timeout.I'm not saying use it alot but at least show it a few times a game and if it doesn't work out scrap it.Everybody seems to see us as "vanilla" well O.K. lets show 'em a little "strawberry".Just a thought.

The wildcat is for teams who can't get a first down using a standard formation....

Yeah, but....It's a wrinkle to put in the offensive scheme to stay away from vanilla offenses every play. Frankly we could use a bit of imagination right now!!

It's pretty sad that that we as fans are considering installing gimmick formations because receiver and tight ends can't consistently get open.

Direct snaps to RBs, YES I would like to see how that works for us. We have 3 very talented, and very different styled runners.

"Sugg's Package", no. Everytime we tried it we had to waste a timeout or Smith ended up running for 1 yard... I think it confused our offense as much as opposing defenses.

The key reason the the Dolphins are so successful when they run the Wildcat is that they practice more than anyone else. I highly doubt Cam is going to have the team start practicing it, especially with the base offense unable to score in the first half of six consecutive games.

---OL----OL----OL----OL----OL----Heap----
Clayton----------Rice-------------Mason
--------McGahee-----------McClain

You can mix the WR's up by throwing Williams and Harper in there just for the size and speed. Also Clayton is known to have a good arm so you could switch him with Rice, or put Troy Smith in the mix. This team has a lot of talent to run the Wildcat that why I'm bringing this up.

I only can hope Cam is saving this for the Playoffs where we "unleash hell". lol

The reason why the Ravens don't run it anymore is because with the exception of one big play last year it was pretty unsuccessful. The wildcat is dying down anyway because last year the Ravens defense provided a blueprint on how to defend it. it was simple, they just didn't overpersue and played it like any other run play up front.
