Lost Identity

44 posts in this topic

Over the course of most of our seasons (prior to 2009), our identity was simple. Run the Ball. Play shut down defense.

But in 2009 it seems like we are confused about our identity. Some games we come out slinging the ball. Some games we want to establish the run. Some games we play great D, others we can't stop anyone.

What is our current identity? Playoff teams have identities. They aren't inconsistent about game plans every week.

If you look at the top teams in the league. You can easily spot what they do well. You look at the Ravens, its confusing. Defense? err, No. Running Game, Sometimes. Passing Game, Erratic. We never know what type of team we will be week to week.

Most of our prior success has come from the running game and defense. Should we continue down this path because its worked before? Or has this become such an offensive league (& QB league) that we should adapt to the times and change our prior identity, especially since we added Flacco and have a defense that's coming up short?

What are your thoughts? Old school or New School? Whatever it is, we need to stick to it.

Absolutely OLDSCHOOL! Offense wins games but defense wins Championships.
But if you do not have the defense. Then a high-powered offensive attack is your best bet.

Any team that runs the ball well and has a good D can make it to the playoffs. But a team that is missing one of those ingredients will be no good.

How many times this season have we fell behind first? Or fallen behind more than one score? A lot.

We have tried to be a high-powered offense without running high-powered sets. So if Cam wants to throw a lot. We have to see more 3 WR and 4 WR sets. Attempts down-field. It's another case of mistaken identity.

I agree with you about having more than just the two reciever looks. That has been the reason for our lack of success lately. Teams have been able to shut this down. We definately need to add some more weapons for Joe to look to. I think Cam has just been doing this to simplify Joes reads. The way the NFL is these days you almost have to go with the "high powered" type of offense. Pass to set up the run. Our identity will come to light. It may take some more time but it will start to show itself.

Our identity used to be thus: Run the ball, control the clock, get pressure on the QB, and get off the field on 3rd down.

Now, we've become pass-happy because it's the "trendy" thing to do, but newsflash: We don't have the WR corp. to sustain that! We do, however, have (soon-to-be) 3 Pro Bowl RBs behind a young and talented O-Line. Let's utilize them more.

i dont think that we lost are identity more like we gained more of an identity as more of a complete team. the problem is we are still a work in progress. we complained for years all we needed was a qb. now we have one that can make the throws and reads and we still dont want to put faith in him. im proud to say i saw the day we had a complete offense because not only can we run and throw be we can also throw in a 3rd dimision with the trick plays because we have 2 capable qbs. if anything we are one of the most dangerous teams in the league right now. we just need to learn how to excute on the skills that we have. the only problem i see is the secondary and with time i even see that correcting itself as well.

That's the thing. We can still run the ball effectively if we choose to. But we aren't getting pressure on the QB or getting off the field on 3rd down. So we can't have the same philosophy as before.

Controlling the clock is great, but it doesn't mean anything if the other team continually scores TDs. It's putting us in this position where we have to throw a lot of times.

To me the run game & defense goes hand and hand.

I see what your're saying. We've become more balanced. And being a balanced team is an identity.

But I feel like most games we aren't being balance. We are either doing A or doing B. We are changing things from week to week, which is causing confusion as to what we do well. I'm so confused, I don't even know what we do well anymore.

I've never seen so many runs for loss in all my years as a Ravens fan... it's killing our drives. We're consistently in 2nd and 12 or 13 and 3rd and long, allowing teams to pin their ears back and get after Joe in obvious passing situations.

The main reason I believe this team has lost it's identity is because the Ravens are a team in heavy transition.

On offense, the team finally has a QB who they can build around in Flacco. However, the weapons around him, save for Rice, aren't gamebreakers and can't consistently win match-ups regardless of the coverage or schemes. The offensive line is young which can lead to missed assignments and other mistakes.

On defense, it's even worse. The only real building block for the future I see right now is Ngata. There are older players who were once great but are on the decline, young players who could turn into quality starters, decent veterans who are good supporting players and some other players who are barely practice-squad worthy.

The bad news is maybe we all should've tempered our expectations coming into this season. The good news is, the coaches likely know who to keep and who to jettison in the off-season.

Well my two cents is this. As cliched as this sounds I have to say it. If it isn't broken, don't fix it. I think one of our previous posters was right on the money. We went from a simplistic smash mouth team (running, rough D), to a team with so many weapons now we don't know how to cope.

For 12 years we never had a QB, so we ran the ball. Mostly for 12 years we never had many WR/TE options like we do this year. Now we have a multi faceted team, but we no longer have an identity. We don't know if we wanna run it, and if we do which of our 3rb's does so? By the constant moving around, can we really get into sync? Maybe it's a blessing to have 3 totally unique backs, or maybe it isn't.

We complained all those years of a lack of offense. We now have one, lets let them gel. They will.

WR's - realistically we have 4-5 decent receivers, but no one to write home about. We also have very talented TE's, if we can correctly utilize them.

I think we have so much talent that we're in a transition period of attempting a new identity. Having all the talent is great! We just need to figure out how to utilize it strategically, and keeping the team in sync along with it.

As Ravens fans we have no idea what team we are watching this year. They are so far from our norm. We are ecstatic! We finally have a great QB! Our offense is clicking, kinda! What's that, you must be lying, we gave up how many points, our D???? You mean Baltimore has an offense, but no D? With their players? What in the world happened?

All that said, I think the offense will figure it out. They can be extremely potent by the playoffs, or at any given time between now and then. Yet, our issue as odd as it sounds to say so being a Ravens fan, it our D!

I'm not gonna beat this to death, because its been tossed around so much. Honestly go back to the 3-4, bring the blitz, and stop giving QB's so much time to pick us apart. Get Webb more involved, and draft a large, physical corner next year. That said a large WR, as well.

Hmmm, not only sickly talented, but we have arguably some of the best defensive players to ever play their respected positions in the history of the NFL. Odd, how we switch schemes, and an unexperienced Defensive Coordinator comes in, and all of a sudden we've lost what has been our teams "IDENTITY" since our inception. Defense! Wake up coaches!

All you have to do is put on game film of the previous decade. Watch how this team has set itself apart, and has set the standard. Compare that to this year. Whats the difference?

"Identity" is way overrated. Maybe its a good thing that our opponents can't key in on what we do. You do whatever it takes to win, since different teams have different weaknesses to exploit.
Only "identity" we should be concerned with is whether we are winners or losers.

I agree. It's great to be able to play offense one way and be unstoppable but few teams are built that way. I would much rather see a balanced team that can run and pass when need be on offense and play solid defense. To me, that's what the FO has been trying to build but people expect all the pieces to be either drafted or signed in off-season. It doesn't happen that way. Look at the Bengals. Marvin Lewis has been that defense for over 4 years and look at them now. It takes time.

Just look at the Bengals. That used to be our identity. Now we look more of a high flying team, thats not ready to take over on offense, and the defense is also suffering because of this.

I think both of you have hit the nail on the head. To be honest, our "identity" has won us a total of 1 championship over the last 12 years. I think we are now laying the foundation to better compete for a spot in the Super Bowl on an annual basis for years to come. The Ravens are a work in progress. We are not yet the complete team that can accomplish the things all of us are hoping for, but we are a class organization that is building the right way by not sacrificing our future to make a one season run for the Super Bowl. As we have witnessed in the past, that is not the way to run a franchise.

It's difficult to watch points being put on the board so easily by our opponents after years of shutouts and low scoring games. But in my opinion, being patient and building a balanced team around a core of young stars will reward all of us in the future with a consistent, well oiled machine that will be feared on both sides of the ball by any opponent that steps on the field.

That said, stranger things have happened. We win 2 of the 3 games against the Colts/Steelers, win our other 4 games and we are most likely in the playoffs. And you never know, maybe some of the players that are now under achieving find their game and we make it to the Big Show. Just look at last year, we were only game away.......

I'm sorry, but I have to disagree. Until this year, we have never had a QB the quality of Carson Palmer. And the Bengals defense is good, but nowhere near as good as we have had in the past. What the Bengals have this year is a well balanced team that can make plays on both sides of the ball.

I'm afraid we will never again see the game dominating Raven defense of 2000. That D was a freak and we cannot expect to win another Super Bowl that way.

Asking for the 2000 defense is a little unrealistic. I just want a defense that doesn't give up big plays. If we can control big plays, we can easily be a top 5 defense again.

Very true, we must be "patient". We are a class organization, and we are putting our ducks in a row to stay that way for many years to come. To me being patient is no more then 5 losses this year! We're too talented.

Regardless the criticism, we have the ability to compete, and win every game we play from here on out.

Lets get behind them! We can do this!

Here's the deal. Just because you don't accept the Raven's IDENTITY doesn't exactly qualify it to be LOST.

The Ravens made the transition to a PASS FIRST TEAM during the off season when they released Lorenzo Neal.

They made that transition because they knew the "D" was not going to be the same dominant unit for the following reasons:

1. The aging of Trevor Pryce.
2. The aging of Ray Lewis.
3. The loss of Bart Scott.
4. The loss of Jim Leonard.
5. The loss of Rex Ryan.
6. The uncertainty of Kelly Gregg's knees.
7. Suggs was a holdout and out of shape.
8. The uncertainty of D. Landry's neck
9. The uncertainty of Ed Reed's Neck
10. The uncertainty of D. Foxworth
11. The uncertainty of F. Washington as a full-time starter
12. The uncertainty of T. Gooden as a full-time starter

That's a lot of problems to overcome from the "D." But on the "O" side, things were looking better for the following reasons:

1. Joe Flacco's development from year one to year two took a QUANTUM LEAP.
2. Ray Rice's development from year one to year two took a QUANTUM LEAP.
3. They knew Micheal Oher had the DNA of a FOREST ANIMAL!
4. Jarod Gaither had one more year of experience under his belt.
5. They sign Matt Birk.
6. Ben Grubbs had one more year experience.
7. Todd Heap was healthy for the first time in three years.
8. D. Mason decided to "un-retire."
9. Cam Cameron was entering into his second year with the offense.

Add to that the following:

1. The fact that the best teams in the NFL are pass first teams.
2. League rules are designed for offense and passing.
3. You could no longer touch recievers past the five yard mark or get called for "illegal contact."
4. O-Lineman were allowed to tackle pass rushers now.

Yes, the identity of the Ravens IS A PASS-FIRST TEAM. They no longer have a DEFENSIVE MENTALITY.

It's Joe and Ray "all the way." THAT'S OUR IDENTITY! JUST BECAUSE YOU WON'T ACCEPT IT DOESN'T MEAN IT'S LOST.

Hammer man. I think you misunderstood me. Personally,I'm leaning towards a new identity. When I say "Lost" I mean confused. One day they want to be a passing O, then the next they think they will be better off with sticking to the run.

What I'm saying is. If our identity is going to be a passing offense. Let's do it then. We need to be running more 3 and 4 WR sets. What type of passing offense uses a majority of 2 WR sets?

I agree with all your points. Our D isn't keeping us in games. The league is shifting towards an offensive/QB league. I think it fits us best.

I'm not saying stick with the Run & D. I think we need to change. But we have to establish it and stick with it. We look confused week in and week out.

But like many people stated. Maybe we are going through growing pains while making the transition. We need to add the right pieces during this off season.

Let's be honest, when was the last time you saw a fullback run for almost a thousand yards like McClain did last year. We should use him in the best capacity possible, and that's as a RB, not a FB in my opinion...

Actually, I didn't misunderstand you. My point is that the Ravens have not done ANYTHING REALLY WELL ALL YEAR,,,,BUT PASS THE BALL. They have not dominated any game they have played by running the ball because they really aren't even capable of that.

Let's just forget defensive domination altogether this year, because they are just gonna break your little heart into a thousand pieces.

The Ravens are a PASS FIRST TEAM. They just need to stop pretending and get on with it already. Just come out of the lockerroom and jump into the "no-huddle" and "man-up"!

Stop "frontin"!

'Ain't that the truth. I know that Lo Neal is gone, but the Ravens have had a good running game since basically forever, and now we're kind of sputtering.

Speaking of negative runs, before the Cleveland game, the Ravens were one of three teams with more negative runs (22) than 10+ yard runs (21). The others: Detroit and Buffalo. That's not the kind of company I want to keep.

There's only one problem with that: we aren't winning as often as we should be. The only reason our opponents "can't key in on what we do is because we don't do anything particularly well anymore.

I'm with Ya'! Big plays have killed us this year. In fact, take away 3 or 4 and we now sit at 7 and 2. I'm fully confident we will get to a point where we again have stout defense, when is the question.

Joe may not be lighting it up right now, but he is a bomb getting ready to explode. I'm confident we have not seen even 50% of his true abilities and as he becomes more adept at reading defenses and gets the protection he needs, he will be everything (with receivers!) we need to have a killer passing game. If you look at the QB visiting this weekend, he really didn't hit full stride until 3 or 4 years into his career.

Ummm... thats about the exact point I was trying to make. (Minus letting McG go, because he would also tear it up behind Lo Neal)

What are yo talking about? If Rex was the HC, how do you know the team would have good corners? Bart Scott was let go because the team wanted to bring back Ray and Suggs. And how would the team have a stand-out receiver?

Everything in that nonsensical rant was speculation and barely made sense.
