The good thing is, replacing a kicker isn't as hard as replacing a starter at any other position; kickers are a dime-a-dozen, and the only premium you place on the position is consistency in the clutch. We don't necessarily need a kicker to make clutch kicks just yet -- we just need one that's consistent, period. The clutch kicks will come over time.

In fact, it's more difficult to replace a long-snapper than a kicker, because the long-snapper needs to have chemistry with the holder to ensure that the kicker has the best chance of making his kick. There've been far too many botched kicks this season because of long-snappers making mistakes.

I kind of feel bad for him.

He might be back after a couple of years, working on that accuracy.
Unfortunately, the kid has GREAT accuracy. His problem is mental. That's a lot tougher to deal with. I wish him all the best to get another gig in the NFL. He's got the skillz, he just needs to work out his jitters/choke/panic/(insert yours here) syndrome.

I'll miss him. He was an easy target for parody. Now I'm gonna have to start thinking again. :argh:

The Ravens could, in theory, buy out his contract. I'm not sure if that can be done, but it's always a thought. It'd be more money than needed just for a kicker, though, because they'd have to pay for his services to his UFL team and negotiate an NFL contract with him. Kickers are dirt-cheap as-is, so why pay more than necessary just for a guy whose contract will be up in a couple short weeks anyway? Easier just to get someone in the interim and bring in Gano later if there's still interest.
Because the pay for a kicker is $25K per season, so theyd have to pay about $10K. WIth the NFL minimum, theyd be paying him more than that for one quarter of work.

Nugent has been horrible this season, missing every kick between 40-49 yards... I do NOT want him, unless he's had a revelation and can now kick in that range.

Mike Nugent stats

Field Goals Made: 77
Field Goal Attempts: 98

Not bad if you ask me......
Not good if you ask me.....

but maybe he can live up to his potential with another chance. He was a 2nd round pick which is insane for a kicker.

IMO , I cannot see Harbaugh being willing to bring Gano back. That would be confirming that he made a mistake between Gano and Haushka.

More likely that they bring someone else in.

I wanted Mike Nugent when he first entered the draft, but I've softened my stance on him since then.

But at any rate, any kicker would be an improvement over Steve Hauschka at this point. I just want someone whose mortal enemy isn't the left hashmark.

2-6 this year, must have been those terrible weather conditions in tampa...

cundiff is 6-6 this year but his longest is 31 yards. I don't know who we're gonna chose, but are they better than houshka? Time will tell...

True , but I think they would counter that although Hauschka did not work out, they still picked the better kicker between him and Gano.

Gano did miss a few chip shots in pre season

25k to kick in the UFL? Practice squad players make around 70k a year, might be more than that now. Which begs the question who the hell on our practice squad had more promise at their position than this guy does at kicker. We wasted a PS spot to keep Mattison's kid around.

You could make an arguement for KJ Gerard, but I think you answered your own question: Bryan Mattison.

It is about time.

What's wrong with you guys though? We finally get rid of this guy and now you want the guy he actually did better than in the preseason to come in? Where is the logic, people? Gano isn't the answer.

Gano is a real rookie though. Hauschka should have blown him away in that battle but he didnt.

Based on the lack of clutch kicking Steve knew it was time and I'm sure he and Harbs talked about it - and Harbs told him to keep working out for his next gig. Steve's got to find his zen, so to speak.

That all said, this thread is starting to stink of Philly forums - let the guy leave in peace. It's not like he didn't put in the effort or was some kind of T.O. type. He just couldn't cut it in the clutch this time around. The celebration mentality... just amazing that people find glory is someone's misfortune - at least someone who didn't put any effort into hurting you.

I agree. It's not like he didn't try or didn't care, it just didn't work out. I hope he figures it out. Until then, I do understand the need for the Ravens to move on and try to find someone that can produce NOW.
