Franchises History

We all know the Colts stole our team's history and when the Browns moved here, we let Cleveland keep theirs. What happened when the Oilers moved to Tennessee? Raiders? Rams? Etc? Did any of those teams keep their history or did it move with those teams to their new cities?

I'm pretty sure all their records and history went with them, considering they took the names when they left.

not totally sure on what actually happened with them. But i would Imagine that the oilers got to keep their record and whatever else since there is no team called the "Oilers" anymore, just the houston Texans. i think the same thing would apply for the Raiders, and the Rams...seeing how LA doesnt have a Football team now so they got everything (or brought everything) with them when they left. im sure that they were also given some kind of warning to the teams and the owners Intentions...you know????? not just get up, pack up everything and move in the daed of night, without telling a soul and having the peopl find out first hand....in which was a terrible act to commit none the less.

They were the Tennessee Oilers for a while before changing their name. Not sure if they kept the records or not.

The oilers records all moved with the team. The Ravens played the Tennessee Oilers the last game at Memorial stadium....you know the last team the Colts played at Memorial stadium?? The Houston Oilers.....

I think alot of it has to do with what they think is good for fans and the team (minus those colts). The Oilers changed thier name because I think they wanted a Team fans could identify with as their own team. Why the Cardinals keep their dismall history I will never know.

Baltimore QB Mike Pagel hit TE Pat Beach for what would be the last Baltimore Colts touchdown ever, the Colts won their final game 20-10; they also won their very first game at Memorial Stadium way back on 9/27/53 over the Chicago Bears 13-9.

art modell mis-guided you guys.....we have our history with the browns because we fought for it...not because modell is a nice guy. art was forced to leave our history behind. we filed a class-action lawsuit against him.as far as the others....i think the colts should have left the name/history in baltimore as with the rams in LA....but the raiders belong in oakland....that is where they started.

well lol since the Colts up and left baltimore in the dead of the night.....and were in the Indy the next day practically, it put a wrench (so to speak) in what we were trying to do...i mean the whole team, the Name, the History and the record....all went with them....while we were left with nothing at all..so we were in a bit of a pickle....

im happy a baltimore media source leaked modell's intended move...that gave us a chance to fight for what is ours. i have no doubts that if the story wasn't leaked, modell would have left in the same manner irsay did and we'd be stuck with nothing, just like all of you were in '84.

Yeah, I really could give 2 sheets about Indy having our team and history because they are forever tainted by their crooked midnight move. They can have the Superbowl they didn't earn, we got another one anyway. The only thing that I can't stand is that they claim Unitas as theirs. The fans claim him, the announcers compare him to Manning (grrrrr) and Unitas never played for them. Unitas stopped playing a decade before the move and was one of the more influential people lobbying for Baltimore to get another NFL team. Unitas is Burried in Timonium MD where he raised his family not INDY. I can't stand Indy.

Gotta love revisionist history. :P

Art Modell received a lot of pressure HERE to leave the name, colors, and history in Cleveland. The Baltimore fans were adamant that we did NOT want to be the Baltimore Browns. We wanted to start over with our "own" team. That was made very clear to Art.

Despite the "lawsuit" (which never went to court), it was Art's decision to "do the right thing" and appease the fans of BOTH cities.

to hell with it......the past is the past.......we both have teams, you guys have another SB title and now we're playing well.....so.....i guess everything has it's way of working out.

That'd be almost as bad as the Baltimore Bombers.

How about our appropriately named former B-Ball team the Baltimore Bullets.

Fitting...but the alliteration is still cringe-worthy.

Well actually it wasnt art being a nice guy...

"The decision triggered a flurry of legal activity that ended when representatives of Cleveland and the NFL reached a settlement on February 8, 1996. It stipulated that the Browns' name, colors, and history of the franchise were to remain in Cleveland, including past records and the attribution of its Pro Football Hall of Fame players. A reactivated Cleveland Browns team would then begin play in 1999, while Modell's relocated club would technically and legally be an expansion team, the Ravens"

The NFL brokered a deal with clev and balt, to drop all legal actions give balt a new franchise in exchange for keeping the history in clev and promising clev a new team in 1999.

"to hell with it......the past is the past.......we both have teams, you guys have another SB title and now we're playing well.....so.....i guess everything has it's way of working out."

The stupid thing is after all those moves the NFL finally stepped in when cleveland moved, (why not all the other times or when balt moved??) after all these moves, most of the cities that lost a team have one again(cards, colts, browns, raiders, houston, etc), and everyone has new stadiums, so the fans sufferred, the nfl and the owners got rich, and everything is right back where it started anyway! Just we fans lose out and the owners get $$$$.

I hope the NFL does somthing about team records and history, leave them in the cities, you cant ban teams from moving since it is a business, but keep the memories in teh cities and if they get a team back they can contiue.

i said it a few times here and i'll stick by it......i think all the teams histories should stay where it was made...

pre-1984 colts history should stay in baltimore

rams history should stay in LA and pre-1949 in cleveland

the cardinals are dismal and they really dont have a history lol

but you get my point, im sure

I agree, I think records should be kept with the city. It makes more sense to do it that way and causes less confusion in the long run. The only people that will cry is Indy because they will be forced to give up a superbowl and Unitas.

Thankyou for realizing this, many don't. I never wanted another cities team, and had a hard time even following the Ravens at first but that did not last long  You get the younger "get over it" crowd, then there are the rest of us. I used to go to games with my dad, in fact I was at the last game ever played here. He takes credit for the crazed fan that i am today.

I really hope the media does not hype the Dec 9th game like the playoff game last year, for me it was very emotional. I too want he pre-1984 records and logo's retired. I have nothing but respect for Peyton Manning and Tony Dungy, I just wish they would have won with another franchises colors.

ill admit.....i rooted for the ravens to lose every week for the first 3 years, i was resentful. but, after we got our team, i started to get over it. sometimes the pain of losing my team is still there.......it was there when i saw them win a super bowl. at least we get to keep our history and records. and i wish the colts would give that back to you guys. it's the right thing to do.......but....when has an Irsay ever done the right thing? lol

at least you had 3 years of knowing you were getting a team....we had 12 years of of the nfl using us to get deals in cities they wanted...

you're right....it did make it a little easier knowing we would have a team in 1999....but it still hurt to lose the team. i have said, and will continue to say....baltimore got shafted more than anybody else could ever imagine when Satan, as some of you like to call him, packed the mayflowers and moved overnight. maybe that is why i'm not so hateful towards the ravens....because we got a new team after 3 seasons......but it hurt to go even 1 year without football.....i had to watch the steelers every week lol

i wasnt born yet (i was born in '89) and therefore i didnt see/or hear about it all.....BUT i most certainly have come to learn as much as there is to know about what happened....and Thus my Dis-may and my Anger began to build inside of me, building a (in some retro-spect of it) brick wall of Rivalry Hatered lol meaning, they stole everything from us and left us with nothing at all....in the middle of th night with no prior warning or NOTHING. so my competitive Hatred had grown into what it is today.

im happy everything worked out in the end.....well almost worked out......baltimore is still robbed of their history, but you got another super bowl. the hard part really was cleveland picked up the pittsburgh package so if i wanted to watch football on sunday i had to watch the steelers .....that really sucked lol

I remember the first year Baltimore went without NFL football in 1984, that the Baltimore NBC affilate showed some Indianapolis Colts games. That really stunk having to watch Irsays team in a new city.
