Have any of you seen the Steelers-Broncos game? As much as I hate that man, he lined up against Champ Bailey and outfoxed and beat him every snap with his speed and agility. Maybe I am exaggerating this, but if Santonio Holmes wasn't there Big Ben would have been in deep doo doo out there this monday. We need our speedy #1 WR that beats perennial Pro bowl CBs and will fight the ball unlike our WRs against the Bengals. Our CBs are the real problem? Hey, I don't disagree with that, our CBs have been atrocious, but I think if we convert to 3-4 again and get more pressure to the QBs, our CBs won't be exposed to burnage so much, our defense is using the wrong scheme with good players, and our offense is using the right scheme with bad players for targets. Plus, we only gave up 17 points to the Bengals and their multi-target offense anyhow. If we had a Holmes of our own, I have no doubt in my mind we would have lost that game.

edit: keep in mind that the league is going offensive also, I think we should take advantage of that with a #1 WR instead of having a pro bowl CB making great plays here and there but a costly but questionable PI call by the refs

I agree. This team does need a receiver like Holmes. He and Clayton are the same size and yet they're completely different players. Holmes consistently gets yards after the catch, fights for jump-balls and routinely gets separation(even against good corners). Clayton doesn't do any of those things with any consistency.

While I do see the Ravens drafting a corner next year's draft, I have a feeling they'll draft a receiver in the first round.

Why Holmes; can't we wish for our own Andre Johnson or Larry Fitzgerald or... anyone who's not a Steeler?
[/quote]

Holmes is a better example because Johnson and Fiztgerald are rare talents that don't come along very often.

I personally would like to see the Ravens get a receiver like Roddy White. He's the complete package.

Out of all the receivers in the league, why choose a Squealer? What we need is our own Larry Fitzgerald or Andre Johnson like darklight said, who are better than Holmes in every way.

Holmes IS a good exmple, heck even their new guy, Wallace, is doing a solid job. Its pretty hard to go out and find another fitz, Johnson, etc.

Your're probably right. But if you drive the van, I'll bag Andre Johnson. I'll make him demand a trade to the Ravens!

Suppose we had Kelley Washington in on 1st and 2nd down vs. just 3rd down ?
I think he has a little more to offer than just a 3rd down player.

And suppose we try some 4 WR sets. Everybody does them. Why don't we? I think our offensive line will be fine by themselves.

I agree. Cam went into some 5 wide sets on the last drive against cincy. Both of them were quick slant to Rice but both went for big yardage. Hopefully he does that more often to open up the tougher defenses.

AJ is 6'3, 200- some lbs of pure muscle. I'm not so sure that your plan is a good one, lol.

Honestly? I would take any Steeler WR over what we got. Say what you want about Ward but hes a damn good WR that plays with passion. Only WR not consistent on that team is Limas Sweed. I would even take that Wallace guy off there hands he really looks like he is going to pan out and be deadly just like holmes.

Not many teams can boast 2 Superbowl MVP receivers... we certainly lose to the Steelers in that area.

I wish we did have a receiver of that nature...

OR...

We could do what wins games for us... and RUN THE DAMN BALL!

It wears down the other team's defense, and it keeps our mediocre defense off the field... which means the other team's offense has very limited opportunities to get into a rhythm.

I'd take Derrick Mason over Santonio Holmes any day... but Joe Flacco is not Roethlisberger. He's just not ready to be throwing 40 times a game. He doesn't see the play developing enough, and doesn't hit the receivers early enough. Not saying he won't get better. He's in his 2nd year, and because the team made it to the AFC Championship last year everyone's expectations are going to be way too high. But there is no excuse for how little the team is running the ball.

+1 for you. Your absolutly right, Mclain and Mcgahee should be involved way more, not saying rice isnt getting it done, he damn sure is. But bring that 3 headed monster that every team feared last year BACK!!!

TO BE HONEST WITH ALL FANS!!!

i do not see us drafting a wide reciever or corner 1st round. im gonna go wiht a DE, thats if we convert back to a 3-4 defense which hopefully mattison is gone, lets pray on this, his scheming is horrible, and why change to a 4-3 when our 3-4 has been working since 2002. effed up our season, thanks john for bringing in someone who has no experience in the NFL!!! NICE!!!. sorry but our corners are good, foxworth washington and webb., these 3 are gonna be our future, they only need to work on a little bit of things, there atheletiscm and speed gets them far, there young, and in the wrong scheming and under the wrong defensive coordinator. sorry every1 but its true and alot of u know it too; cant put blame on a secondary which was 2nd in the league last year under rex ryans scheming, and they go to 21st or something under mattison, thats a big difference..especially when we got foxworth who has been stepping up alot.. washington hes good on the deep ball, he needs to work on the slant route, but thats also where there should be some help over the middle

I FEEL BAD FOR THESE GUYS CUZ THERE ALWAYS GETTING CRITISCM, remember when a quarterback has 7-10 seconds to throw a ball, ex.. palmer, brady, and were even gonna see it from big ben and peyotn, im sorry but if there is no pressure on the qb , he can embarass ur secondary..
just like the guy who created the topic,

CHAMP BAILEY, got destroyed constantly by holmes, cuz ben had time to throw the ball

revis, got owned by tenn ginn jr a good amount of times especially the deep ball.. Y????????? cuz there was no pass rush..

nmandi emabarassed by jackson 4 times from what i saw... cuz the lack of pressure

im sorry i feel bad for our boys back there, and it all revolves around the coaching and his poor knowledge of the game, u think he would change it up a bit or harbaugh say something

NO!!! HES A Panzy... thats his guy, we would have been a top contender if we had nolan here. sorry but he was out there... put the blame on harbaugh,...

amazing talent on this team and we cant exploit it with a horrible coordinator...

time for a change in coaching, hopefully ray says something to ozzi and bischotti

I completely one hundred percent agree reciever was the biggest whole on the depth chart before the season started and is one of the many reasons that experts were not giving the Ravens enough credit at this point no one knows where were going to end up at the end of the season and the playoffs are still within reach but with the poor play of our secondary and the passing attacks we face in the coming weeks with Peyton Manning and his high flying offense coming in followedby the apperently elite Big Ben the Rapis and Aaron Rogers and the Packers offense and dont sleep on the speed and ability of the bears passing game if cutler could complete the balls to his receivers maybe they would be better too but the point reamins if we can get that high even if we can trade up Dez Bryant the currently suspended college wide out from Oklahoma state hes everything wed be looking for a number one recieverf with tremendous upside and when the season ends and Mattison is fired and the defense is called right like it should be we will get the prssure we've always had and help our secondary

I have to agree with running the ball - it worked so well for us last season and if anything, Rice has gotten better! - really baffles me!

There are so many WRs I would love to see in Bmore and no doubt we will see a top one come in to replace DM next season if he does retire - AJ would be a dream!

The receivers have to be the most frustrating element of the offense right now. Ray Rice is a really good player and makes plays in space but he really shouldn't be catching as many balls as he does. Flacco should have at least one receiver open on every play but the past two weeks, he's dropped looking to go down-field only to dump off passes to Rice. For years, L.T. caught a lot of balls because SD has no receivers. The same goes for Steven Jackson right now. The Ravens don't have that problem. Mason, Clayton, Washington and Heap aren't game-breakers but they should be helping Flacco out.

I'm tired of seeing of them get shut down every time they face good corners. I refuse to blame Heap because he's clearly hurting out there and giving it his all. The other guys have no excuse.

So what can be done?

You answered your own question...
There not "game-breakers" just your average WR.....thus the Ravens do have a problem at WR.
Why I was pushing for a draft or trade for a elite WR this offseason...

Gotta change it up. Move Clayton into the slot. Tighten up D-Mases routes since Freeny & Steelers will get pressure. Run three WR sets as a norm.

In the game against the Colts we will have to reserve Heap as additional help on Freeny and Mathis.
