Penalties

39 posts in this topic

Correct me if I'm wrong here, but doesn't 'playing like a raven' include not getting penalties? Through 8 games, we have the most penalty yards against us. By alot.

Here's the top five-

1. Baltimore- 73.8 ypg
2. Green Bay- 63.6 ypg
3. Dallas- 60.6 ypg
4. Detroit- 60.5 ypg
5. St. Louis- 59.6 ypg

So were averaging over 10 more yards given up from penalties than the 2nd place team. How pathetic is that? Oh and in case you were wondering, we only averaged 49.6 last year. We are beating ourselves and its making me sick.

Their was a passing interference call that didn't get called on the Bengals when Mason went for a catch...

While I agree some of the penalties were garbage, many of them are still our fault. It's gotten to the point it's wierd if there's a punt return without holding or a snap without a false start.

At this point, our positives are overshadowed by our negatives.

Ray Rice, Ed Reed, Ladarius Webb, and Joe Flacco VS. the rest of the organization.

I know you're a Colts fan, so you aren't biased towards the Ravens, but I rarely see you ever supporting a statement by a Ravens fan.

I support the Ravens all the time but my difference is a "non purple shade color glasses" out look or opinion. I watch every Raven game on Sunday (shown here localy) just like you and just pointing out that the officals have been okay. Yes there are some questionable calls but thats ever Sunday and always the complaint from the team's fans that received the penalty. The Ravens need to start fresh Monday night to get back on track.

Funny how the fire Billick because our team lacked discipline and we hire Harbaugh who raves about character overcoming adversity.......

Not seeing a difference at all except we have a flash of an offense now and no defense, where as with billick we had no offense and an amazing defense....

I mean our defense in 2007 is playing better with all those injuries it had than this healthy ravens defense.

Those are giving the other team first downs as much as any defensive play calling.

Do you watch the Ravens games with the sound turned off? It is not just the fans recognizing the obvious bias. Various announcers (They are not wearing "... purple shade color glasses"!) have said things like "Not sure what they saw there....." and "Why wasn't that called?", etc. These comments have been made after calls/non calls favoring the opponent. As I have said before, Ray Charles could see the tilted officiating in Ravens games.

None of the folks complaining about this are doing so blindly in an attempt to make excuses. We know there are holes in the team and they have not been playing well. Those are faults that can be accepted and or criticized and hopefully improved upon. That's what being a fan is all about, staying with your team, win or lose. But watching the refs ruin the games week in and week out is unacceptable and makes a fan of the game feel very angry and frustrated.

Slip, trip, and fall heard that PI doesnt count against your pass ypg allowed, so they decided to just commit penalties on every play. No one pays attention to penalty yards stats anyways, right?

Well if we cant beat the other team by being better, lets beat them at their own game. If they are not gonna call offensive PI on pick plays against the other team then why arent we running them? If they're gonna call defensive PI 5 times a game on us, then lets call some plays designed to induce the same calls. If they're gonna call it a false start when our o-lineman flinches b/c of a defender jumping into the neutral zone, then we shouldbe doing the same thing on D....
ok,i know none of that will work, but I cant come up with anything else other than just plain outplaying the other team regardless of penalties.

Penalties, slipping and falling, hitting our own players are all side effects of being an overly aggressive defense.

Our defense needs to calm down, go for precision, which may sacrifice that big hit potential. It certainly would help the D so they don't give up the big plays.

Last year the defense was organized chaos, a balance between precision and aggressiveness. This year is just chaos.

I think it's possible...

But the problem with the players is the same problem with the fans here.

Both (may?) blame the refs, instead of their own self-discipline.

If you notice, of the 8 teams with 6 wins or more, 6 of those teams are in the top 12 in least penalized/most disciplined (?) teams...

Not only that... but, as "conspiracy theories" go...

Many people have always considered Dallas and Green Bay as two teams the NFL refs "favored" - and notice that Dallas is 30th in penalty yds, and Green Bay is 31st.

I think we need to abandon the "the refs are out to get us" attitude, and play with aggression under control.

Though some of the penalties called against us have been complete garbage, the majority have been well-deserved.

However, my biggest gripe with the officiating in our games have been the lack of consistency. Obvious penalties against the opponent are going uncalled.

I can't open the link provided in this thread here at work (it's blocked), but I would be interested in seeing where Ravens opponents rank in penalty yards. I heard on the radio this week by a caller that Ravens opponents are the least penalized in the league. I would like to see if this is true because it sure wouldn't surprise me.

In my opinion, that would be a much more telling stat (for critiquing the refs) than how many yards we receive (which is better for critiquing our team).

I agree, discipline is key to wins in the NFL. If the Ravens can Regroup they should be fine MOnday night against the Browns.

I don't think we or anyone else needs to regroup in order to beat the Browns. We can take our vanilla defense, inconsistent offense, and undisciplined execution and still spank them.

If we do lose to the Browns, then we've obviously got alot more problems than inconsistency.

We can all easily sight bad calls as a major problem this year, but from what I've seen we also need more focus. Discipline and focus are what's needed from this team, and until we see that the penalties will continues to rack up no matter how a game is called.

On a side note, hello Ravens forum!
