Merged: Criticism Of The Offense

57 posts in this topic

Offense was pretty ugly today, needless to say.

That being said, did anyone see Grubbs pull right and absolutely demolish Robert Geathers on the play that sent him off for a while? Doesn't mean much obviously, but nice to get in a good lick if you have to lose. Much like the Ray-Chad crusher first time we played 'em.

What happened to our control of the clock? Where is our battering ram up the middle? Why no more lead blocker? The unbalanced line? Did we forget that in the AFC NORTH you win by running the ball and stopping the run? SMASH MOUTH FOOTBALL where is that? Oh....The Bengals remembered, and beat us Raven style once again! Can somebody at least tackle and make a hit when playing away? At home that effort would have been booed off the field - this is getting embarrassing trying to explain to other fans what has happened to our team. We obviously are not all on the same page. Lets get this thing figured out, maybe we just need players that want to play football instead of collecting huge paychecks!

:pirate2: I'd like to know how's Troy Smith figures into the schemes of offense. We have not seen any of Wildcat formations lately and or any of gadget plays, which could help us, IMO.

We havent done a lot of the stuff that worked last year.

I think Harbs and Cam want to make Joe Flacco into Peyton Manning but thats not gonna happen. Recievers are too short and Joe has trouble puttin the ball in a catchable area.

We need to get Lo Neal back and bring out the hydra of running backs.

Lo Neal is a great observation!I'd like to know what MAC33 has to do to get some carries, sure would be a change of pace for defenses to haveto adjust to after a healthy serving of Rice!

It doesn't help when our D is tired. And their D is nicely rested.
Well said PuRock, I'm sick and tired of the Offensive 3 and outs. Poor D!

I don't get it. Why not use Williams 6'2" or Washington 6'3" for Flacco to throw the deep ball to?

It's not strange, it's awful when you think about it. I always thought of Ray Rice as MJD for this team. MJD is like the Jaguars backbone. The team goes as he goes. He's someone that when he has the ball in his hands, he does damage. Proof was with Ray Rice. Rice in open space, dude is a monster. He's probably one of the most effective runners from out of the shotgun.. I think like every play they run out the shotgun with him, it's some positive yards.

Nevertheless, when we had our first possession, it was a typical, run where it backed us up and then Flacco had to make some pickup yards. To me, yeah.. we are down 7-0, but let's enforce our own will on the defense and not be conservative with the playcalling. Let Flacco get into a rhythm with his WR's but it never got like that until what? The 4th quarter?
Ill admit its strange, but the style of play we have on offense our top receivers should be TE's who we can give the ball to for moving the chains, and RB who we can dump the ball off on delays and screen plays.Id love a deep threat for Flacco to use his big arm for.,and i think if Clayton was 4-5 inches taller and had better hands, we'd have a better threat a the deep pass and possibly would make less INT's and more connected passes.

Umm I'm pretty sure our Wildcat never amounted to anything worthwhile... we got penalties or had to call a timeout everytime Troy ran out there.

Now I do agree with the hydra of RBs. Nothing would make me more happy than bringing Lo Neal back in and having a triple threat run game again... because that CLEARLY worked.

I dont know about that but. The one person the pissed me off was Ed Reed he missed 2 tackles on the same guy when all he had to do was wrap up instead he tries to arm tackle by swinging the dude.
+1...

He almost redeemed himself with the strip and recovery, but he whiffed on way too many tackles. He just will NOT extend his arms to tackle, he just throws his body into people, and more times than not, he bounces off.

I've noticed that we aren't a physical offensive team like we were last year. Our offense reminds me of the eagles. Huge offensive lineman, yet we're always passing. A good QB with very few good options to throw to and our RB is leading the team in receptions.

People were talking about baltimore north all summer, well welcome to Philly South!

I just hope that Harbs, Cam and Mattison will simply accept that they can't expect to change the identity of this team to a soft reactive defense combined with finesse pass-happy offense and have success. Even though I love the Ravens, I don't want to watch either of those things. I love the way the Ravens played just as much as the Ravens themselves. (granted the offense stunk for a number of years. I am referencing last year's physical offense)

I shouldn't have to watch a Jets game to get my fix for physical smashmouth football.

Without or without Neal, Cam may have to run the ball more. The curl, out and slant routes Mason and Clayton work fine against mediocre corners but against two studs like Hall and Joseph, Derrick and Mark can't get the separation they need. I salute Heap for his effort but he's a walking injury at this point. And as good Kelley Washington is, the team can't go to him on every play.

Hall and Joseph are probably the best set of corners the Ravens will play all year but I truly believe Cam may have to work McGahee and McClain in more.

Cincinnati is 25th against the pass in the league. We are ranked 19th! Someone explain to me why everyone else has success against these guys but us?

Other than Mason, who is the step up WR Flacco has? Guys need to step up and get open for Flacco.

I'm actually for this move. Why not? What's to lose at this point.

Eron Riley reminds me a lot of guys like Miles Austin & Domenik Hixon. And on top of all that - he's tall. Give the boy a shot, we might be pleasantly surprised.

Miles Austin - Undrafted - 6'3"
Eron Riley - Undrafted - 6'3"

There has to come a point where we aren't afraid of starting guys that aren't "suppose to be" starting. Webb, Kruger, Eron Riley.

I get that but we've played great against statistically much better defenses. The Patriots, Chargers and Broncos are ranked 4th, 5th and 6th against the pass. Our offense had pretty good days against all three of those teams.

I just can't believe Cam couldn't come up with some adjusments from the first time we played them.

In actuality the pass d has been good all year except against Houston and, beleive it or not Cleveland. Anderson always lights us up. Teams cant run on them so they throw, but they have been making plays on 3rd down all year, and have not been giving up points.

How about Justin Harper? He would be the first receiver off the practice squad anyway. He's shown he can get open but he drops the ball. If he's worked on that since the preseason he might help. He could at least stretch the field some.

After the way he played yesterday, Webb definitely needs to be starting at at least the nickel.

I know what you mean but the Bengals have arguably the best set of corners in the league. Their ranking seems to be a bit misleading.

As for Cam, it's tough to judge what he did yesterday. The team was down by three scores very quickly and I'm sure that changed the gameplan but the offense never looked right.

+1 also, In my opinion Harbaugh has killed us. Every team in the nfl feared us before this season. Our style of running and our hard nosed defense made teams think twice about us. Yesterday i saw the bengals go for it twice on 4th down. Teams dont fear us no more. We thrived on being bad boys, it gave us a swagger that we loved. Harbaugh has killed that.

I'm for that as well. I was big on Justin Harper during the preseason. But the dropsies were a bit alarming. But at least he could get open.

Most times our OL is stellar. So why not try some 4 WR sets. It rarely happens.

This is a good point. After last season success with the rookie QB, many people had Flacco as the next Brady and I think that's the problem. Leading up to the 2009 season it was Flacco this and Flacco that but what made the 2008 season great was the run game of Rice, McClain and McGahee.
Flacco is not going to be a Brady, Brees or Manning unless you put a Moss, Colston or Wayne out wide on the left side. Ravens need to get back to 2008 and run Rice and McGahee till their legs fall off. The Ravens do not have the personal/players to be passing the football 30 plus times a game.

Apparently Williams has issues with under-performing in practice and that is why we never use him. The problem is that Flacco can't sit in the pocket all day waiting for our receivers to get open. I think this offseason Ozzie needs to draft a DB or WR in the first round to fix this problem
