Strictly a West Coast invention. "Gangsta Rap" as it was known at first to us before everyone lumped Rap into a type of Gangsta or poppy stuff. I lived in California for 2 years, so I got some love for Dre, Kurupt and some of those old dudes. Tupac and Ice Cube were some of the only West Coast guys to actually talk about something other than "the hood".

The Chronic was an incredible album.

Man I loved both Chronics, I could bump those albums all day in my car/ipod and not get tired of them.

West Coast gets some props, but nowhere near as much as East Coast.

Cypress Hill is without a doubt my favorite WC group, always will be,

NWA
Dilated Peoples
Pharcyde

are worth mention for shizzle

I stopped listening to rap for pretty much most of this decade. But I just recently picked up the new Kid Cudi album. And I was really impressed by the different sound. That made me want to get the new Jay-Z. It also helped that both of these albums where the MP3 deal of the day on Amazon.

I'm still holding my breath hoping that hip-hop changes to a new enjoyable movement. But with the youth's ADD problems, I can only see it getting worse.

Youre turning blue, brother. Hold onto our era as tight as you can. Mid 80's - Mid 90's is as good as it'll ever get. True Hip-hop, block party style. Now its duck and cover.

Kidz in the Hall gives me hope for the new school. They're a throwback to the days of the MC-DJ duo, similar to Eric B & Rakim or GangStarr.

YouTube - Kidz in the Hall - "The Pledge (ft. Sean Price and Buckshot)"

YouTube - Kidz in the Hall - "Wheelz Fall Off ('06 Til)" - Souls of Mischief's "'93 'til Infinity" remake

YouTube - Kidz in the Hall - "Drivin' Down The Block (Low End Theory)" - interpolates Masta Ace's "Born to Roll" in the chorus

YouTube - Kidz in the Hall - "Love Hangover (ft. Estelle)" - Naledge kills it in the last verse at 2:35ish -- pretty much the soundtrack to my love life, lol.

2Pac, Bone thugs n Harmony, Wu Tang, Snoop Dogg and Common. Thats what I grew up on.

As for best rapper I gotta go with Jay-Z or Nas.

I think it's tough to say who the best is, it's all a matter of opinion and it's unimportant imo.

The artists in heavy rotation on my iTunes lately are Nas, Mos Def, Lupe Fiasco, Royce Da 5'9", Q-Tip, Black Milk, Skyzoo, Paten Locke and Wale.

I would say Nas and Andre 3000, are the greatest imo. I feel like Nas is giving me a history lesson when I listen to him. Plus I like the fact that both of them grew instead of rappin about cars, clothes and women. Lil Wayne is a good rapper but kinda gimmicky, T.I is nice but not on Nas level yet.

I was naive too, but "Dead Wrong" made me realize that Biggie was the one with all the talent.

YouTube - The Notorious B.I.G. - "Dead Wrong"

One of the most violent songs I've ever heard, but so damn visual. You can just picture each line of each verse so vividly, and it's more gut-wrenching than any Hollywood production could hope to replicate. If ever a song was visceral in its presentation and atmosphere, this is it.

yea big was great on that song, but eminem killed the remix....have you heard that one?

The clip in that video IS the remix. Well, correction: the most well-known version of that song IS the remix, as the original has an entirely different beat. The official music video doesn't have Em's verse because the song was already censored heavily as-is.

I hate Lil Wayne. His voice annoys me. He sounds like he's on crack. I like Lupe Fiasco and T.I. Those are the only two rappers out right now that I listen to consistantly. Drake to me isnt a real rapper.

Kanye is a tool. I don't care how good he flows.

KRS-One is one smart man, good rapper to boot but not the best.

Common is another up there. Smart guy.

I guess your talking about the Taylor Swift incident.

OT- Did anybody take the where will Kanye interrupt you quiz on facebook?

Despise Lil Wayne and most "southern" rap, dude talks about nothing in any of his songs. Like really a song entirely devoted to Kobe Bryant?

I don't understand how the man could've improved so much lyrically from one album to the next. He was horrible on 500 Degreez and then improved drastically on Tha Carter -- yet, despite that, was still not that special on the mic. He has to have a ghostwriter.

His flow is admittedly unique, but nothing that ODB didn't do better back in the day. Otherwise, Weezy has no redeeming qualities as a straight-up lyricist.
