Who Is The Best Rapper Alive?

143 posts in this topic

Who do you all think is the greatest rapper alive? Lil Wayne calls himself the greatest rapper alive but you gotta earn that nickname. I don't think he is even close to being the best. The only song by Lil Wayne that I like is Kobe Bryant and I've heard a LOT of Weezy songs. I really like Kanye and Eminem. Also 50 Cent was great when he made Get Rich or Die Tryin but, in my opinion, hasnt done anything really good since then. Drake is pretty good and The Joker is an up and comer.

Who do you all think is the best rapper alive?

I think it would have to go to a "modern" rapper like Jay-Z or Kayne West.

But my two cents. Give me the Wu, KRS-One or my personal faves, Jeru the Damaja & OC.

Kanye is a tool. I don't care how good he flows.

KRS-One is one smart man, good rapper to boot but not the best.

Common is another up there. Smart guy.

Im oldschool too. Some of these new guys would be destroyed in a battle with KRS, Rakim, Nas, and Common IMO. Kanye went super whack with his autotone thing hes got goin on. Lil Wayne doesnt even say anything in half his songs. Nurple I loved the Common Sense throw down, I listen to him all the time man.

Old school east cost, brother. Nothing better.

I forgot all about Nas. Guru from Gangstaar is another one. These kids wouldn't know what to do in a battle rap against some of the older guys we've mentioned so far.

Youngins'...listen up!!! Start limewiring some of the guys we've mentioned that you've never heard of. You'll thank us later, promise. ;)

I agree 100%. Old School, East Coast rap. Once 2000 came around, rap/hip-hop started to take a dip in my mind. It's more about material possessions and women now, more than anything else.

Royce Da 5'9"

There's something to be said about a man who blows his chance at mainstream stardom because of his personal bout with alcoholism, only to find redemption in the industry again by forming a supergroup with other underappreciated underground rappers. Eminem wants to sign him and the other members of Slaughterhouse to Shady Records, and with his underrated body of work, it's easy to see why. He can do materialism, social commentary, humor, storytelling...any type of song you can think of, he's probably done it, and done it well.

Man you wanna go Wu on us lol. Only Built For Cuban Linxs is one of the most insane albums through and through I ever heard. Raekwon, GZA, Ghostface, man those dudes could spit back in the day. Method Man had more commercial success but I always thought kwon, GZA, and Ghost were the best.

Meth got lazy. That was his downfall.

Otherwise, he's shown flashes of being a great overall lyricist. His cadence and braggadocio was impeccable, and he was just the complete package. The only reason why the other members outshined him as a pure lyricist, was because he started to show less effort as the years wore on.

I like the original Wu, not the stuff they pump out lately. I love the GZA, he's the best of the bunch. Another smart rapper. There's a theme here.

Ghost is second I would agree. I can't really stomach the RZA. Like you said Meth was commercial. People love the image he put out.

Ya thats what I liked out of Raekwon and GZA, you could always expect that consistent flow that was raw and real. Method would go insane and totally destroy beats sometimes and then other times it was like listening to new Busta Rhymes...just like what the hell is this.

I still think Jeru the Damaja should rejuvenate his career. He just sort of disappeared from the scene one day.

Speaking of new Busta Rhymes...it's funny, but Busta's flow is still nice, but that's just masking his weaknesses as a lyricist lately. He's not really saying a whole lot and seems to be rapping fast just for the sake of rapping fast.

Sounds like Cormega or Canibus. Take your pick. I was never really a fan of either artist, though, so no loss to me personally.

Please take a moment to witness probably the coolest live video ever. Beasties "Shadrach", filmed live, then hand-painted in oil and shot again and sequenced into one of the most time-consuming videos ever produced.......

Ya thats a good list, GZA is the best to me too. Like you said Liquid Swords is just a sick album. I like Raekwon ahead of Ghost, strictly because of Only Built For Cuban Linxs, I think thats one of the nastiest albums all time.
