Perhaps John Harbaugh just got himself crossed off the Dallas Cowboys' Christmas card list.

The Ravens coach lambasted Jerry Jones' team as "everything that's wrong the NFL" in a new book about the Eagles.

Via ESPN's Matt Mosley, who uncovered the quote in the book, Harbaugh said the Cowboys are built around a collection of stars and not on a foundation intended to support long term success.

He said the Eagles' success since the start of head coach's Andy Reid tenure in 1999 has come from the Philadelphia coach's patient team-building. Harbaugh was an assistant to Reid for nine years prior to becoming the Ravens' coach in 2008.

His comment:

"Why is that? Because what Andy Reid and his program stand for is the opposite of what the Cowboys stand for. The Cowboys are a star system. It's all about building around individuals first and collecting talent, collecting great players. Andy has always been about building a team. And over the long haul, it's a team sport, and one of the greatest examples of that is what's happened with the Eagles and the Cowboys over the last 10 years. The Cowboys stand for everything that's wrong with the NFL."

-- Sean Leahy

So I think this is pretty interesting and absolutely true, does this put the Ravens in the Cowboys sight for the future?

He's absolutely right and no one out there can argue otherwise.

Agreed... and we all remember how he hand-picked us to close out Texas Stadium; how'd that work out for them?

I still don't understand why Jerry Jones would hand pick the Ravens. Is it a fact that he requested to play you guys?

Yep; it's common knowledge around here.

"Baltimore (10-5) turned Dallas owner Jerry Jones’ hope for a homecoming event into a wake. It was Jones who, according to stories going around the NFL, requested of the league that Baltimore be the visiting team in this game rather than one of the 'tougher'teams such as the New York Giants, Philadelphia or Washington."

Not 100% sure, but he did apparently petition the NFL back in April of last year when schedules were being put together; he saw us as a winnable game.

It's near the bottom of the article below...

Well, he got what he deserved and the NFL was stupid to even considering to entertain that request. regardless of which team he requested.

Yes, he did. I loved how EVERYONE was against the Ravens that game too. A lot of fans didn't see the Ravens going into Cowboy Stadium and winning. The best part was Deion Sanders losing it as McGahee crossed midfield with no one within 15 yards of him.

But as for them as a team, Harbaugh was spot on. Not only do they routinely bring in washed up veteran free agents but there doesn't seem to be any order in the locker. You hear correspondents talking about how Romo is a leader after they pull out wins against teams like the Panthers, Chiefs and Seahawks.

No the best part was McClain, a FB out running the entire CB team.

That was where our one friend's father took off his Cowboys Jersey and put on his Flacco 5.

I agree with your post and also with coach Harbaugh's assessment. You can see that, with the Ravens he is assembling the components of a TEAM destined to be good for the long haul and not just the short term, as Andy Reid has done, admirably, in Philly.

Regrettably there is one indisputable fact a Cowboy fan co-worker of mine pointed to me. Jerry's been able to produce a couple of superbowls wins...none for Philly...

Personally, I like the prospect of being a hard nosed, competitive team commited to winning over the long haul (i.e Ravens et al) but it's hard to argue with a Superbowl ring.

ha you go Coach Harbs!

but about the Jerry Jones choosing us for the closing of the Cowboy stadium, nobody really knew Flacco was going to be that good, including me, so I guess it wouldn't have been too far off for Jones to pick us while basically our starting QB was Kyle Boller and press was saying Flacco would be groomed over the upcoming few years. But yep, Jones got what he deserves for underestimating us. THat is my favorite game by far in the stretch of my raven fandom so far, I've watched that highlight million times

I'm pretty sure you can find a comment like that from any coach in the NFL about the Cowboys and Redskins.

Speaking of the Cowboys. They really are getting their money worth for Roy Williams. 3 draft picks?

And to think we had a ton of people on here clamoring for Roy E. Williams trade so that he could be our #1 guy.

Not since he's taken the "Stars" approach he hasn't. He won with the Tripplets who were drafted by the Cowboys (not all in the Jones era if I'm not mistaken). Hasn't won squat since trying to obtain these stars that Harbs is talking about.

The SB trophy HAS eluded Reid, but his team has been FAR more consistent in winning than the Cowboys.

It was probably my favorite win last year but to be honest, as ravens fans, we shouldn't speak about bringing in washed up free agents....Tyree and Washington?

Well, they returned the favor by letting us opt out of the opener in Pittsburgh this year.

Ya know Rav, I kinda thought that was weak yes, BUT:

1). We are a divisional opponent and a huge rival.
2). Harbs did it so his team could establish its identity this year before playing said rival.
whereas
1). Jones did it because he thought he picked a team the Cowboys could beat up on.

Total arrogance.

We bring in no-named guys who have a positive impact on our team. Washington/Dallas brings in overhyped, expensive, over the hill, players with character issues. There's a little bit of a difference.

Tell it how it is, Coach!

The Jones approach, if you will, is probably more likely to reduce a bigger range of results. There will be great seasons, and there will be average or bad seasons when egos clash or self-interested parties dominate the locker room... cough cough Terrell.

Philadelphia has been a mark of consistency, and probably more deserving of success than most other franchises. I actually predicted a Ravens-Eagles superbowl prior to the season, which fingers crossed is very plausible if both teams play the way they did in Week 8!

This could be an old quote, to Jones credit he did get rid of some of the overpriced headaches. They're still a terrible organisation though and Im glad Ray was the one to crash their party.

Wait till the salary cap goes away next year and the Cowboys become the Yankees. Even I could manage the Yankees and be considered a ****** genius.
[/quote]

There are other measures in place to keep a capless year from running amok.

Jerry Jones is playing a billion dollar round of fantasy football. While it may work on paper, it's been nothing but ridiculous on the field. There's no cohesion and no consistancy and as long as they keep going down that path, they're not going to the SB save as spectators.

Okay, and what I would like to try and attach this to is...

The Ravens history in the draft.

I disagree with "taking the best available player" to a certain degree.

You shouldn't be building around players, you should be building the best team.

So if your team has a GLARING need... then you draft the player to fill that. The piece to the overall bigger puzzle.

You don't just get a guy who is ranked higher overall on some combine tests or some wonderlic test.

So I hope this draft coming up, with Harbaugh, our draft strategy changes more towards drafting to fill a need.

Wow...I didn't even know that. Good thing we won that game.

Tyree i'll give you, though i think he was brought in mainly for special teams. But with the way Kelley Washington has played, i hardly think that he deserves to be in the category of "washed up free agents." He has been great for us all season so far.

Don't worry, I have always believed that most teams draft for need, but will claim that they took the best player (BPA). Why? b/c if you say that the player you picked was not the BPA then you just publicly stated that you overpaid for them.
Example this year's draft, the Ravens have a glaring need at RT and draft Oher, the Ravens were happy to get him b/c after all, to them, he was the BPA. :-)

The only exception to this was the Detroit Lions who took the alleged BPA, a WR, 3 years in a row. Idiots
