Dirtiest Players In The NFL

Hinest Ward is the dirtiest player in the NFL, according to a Sports Illustrated poll of 296 players released this week.
The Steelers' wide receiver, received 11.6 percent of the vote. He was followed by Redskins defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth (6.0), Dolphins linebacker Joey Porter (6.0), Bengals safety Roy Williams (5.1) and Titans center Kevin Mawae (4.6). Titans cornerback Cortland Finnegan (4.2), Rams guard Richie Incognito (3.7), Falcons guard Harvey Dahl (3.7), Steelers safety Troy Polamalu (3.7) and Vikings defensive end Jared Allen (3.2) rounded out the top 10.

Last October, [Ward] was fined $15,000 for hits in back-to-back weeks that weren't penalized during the game. Later that month, Ward broke the jaw of Bengals rookie linebacker Keith Rivers with a surprise downfield block. The hit, which ended Rivers' season, did not draw a flag. "That's what he's known for," Bengals safety Chinedum Ndukwe said. "He's a blind-side guy."

The poll included some well-known names in the top 20: Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis (3.2 percent), Chargers linebacker Shawne Merriman (2.3 percent) and Jets linebacker Bart Scott (2.3 percent). Former Patriots safety Rodney Harrison, who retired last summer, received three votes.
The Broncos' Brandon Marshall, the only other receiver listed in the poll, received one vote. No running backs were selected, but one quarterback did get a vote: the Titans' Vince Young.

The "winner" is probabably a surprise to no one, but I did not expect so see Polamalu or Finnegan.

I didn't expect to see Polamalu either. But as for Ward taking top "honors" by such a wide margin, I'd be lying through my teeth if I said I was surprized.

What I would like to know is who voted for Vince Young?

Vince Young voted for Vince Young. He figured it's probably one of the rare occasions that he'll get on any "Top" list in the NFL.

Anyone who says that they are surprised that Ward was #1 is lying. Polamalu thought is a surprise. The dude plays fast and tough, but I wouldn't call him dirty.

That's funny.

As far as Hines Ward, I'm not surprised either but I still think it's BS. As he says, he gets clobbered over the middle and gets up smiling and he'll lay a guy out and smile while he helps him up." It's not the blockers responsibility to worry about whether or not the defender sees him. As long as he's not behind the defender's shoulders, but in front of him, it's legal. As the article says, Hines was never penalized on any of those plays. NOR should he have been fined.

Well, that's my feeling on it anyway. Another quote: "What are they gonna say? That I was too rough?" - Hines Ward.

Finnegan yes--Polamalu no. I do think Ward is a dirty player but I think Incognito and Allan are worse.
[/quote]
You're not surprised to see Troy on the list?

It's seems like the players believe that the Titans and Steelers have/have had the dirtiest players. The AFC seems to be leading by a large margin.

Lol, whenever someone talks about Jared Allen, all I can think about now is how "He belongs on the sidewalk selling fireworks."

On one hand, there is a level of truth when Steelers players say that Hines Ward is the type of player you love to have as a teammate but hate to play against.

On the other hand, the players are the ones actually on the field, so they probably know a bit more about Ward's play than what we see. Perhaps they're not just talking about the downfield blocking? We'll never really know.

Ward's hits may be legal but I think what burned him is the impression he puts off that he enjoys hurting people. Now that may or may not actually be the case, but in every interview I've heard, there seems to be that element.

Not surprised to see Finnegan. Remember when he stepped to Bulluck in our game? He's a ****.

Dude, Rodney Harrison was a dirty player throughout his career. I'm not surprised at all to see Haynesworth or Finnegan on there, Haynesworth is an @$$, and Finnegan, although he's good, thinks waayyyyy to much of his own abilities.

Oh, RODNEY HARRISON. No, definitely understand that.

I thought the reference was to James Harrison.

Nevermind.

EDIT: However, I am deeply surprised to see polamalu on there... def not surprised haynesworth was on there... he's actually the one guy I would have over ward, ... I mean seriously, he kicks people in the face with their helmets

I think Harrison is worse then Ward, mind you they are both bad at least Ward plays the game. Remember the super bowl and Harrison punching that guy after he pushed him to the ground? Should of been kicked out of the game after that and suspended for 8 games.

Rodney Harrison agrees with you, Warden.

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2009/11/05/rodney-harrison-calls-titans-the-dirtiest-team-in-the-league/
Rodney Harrison knows all about being named the NFL's dirtiest player. And he doesn't agree that Hines Ward deserves to "win" the honor.

Speaking on the Dan Patrick Show, he called Ward "an offensive Rodney Harrison." (That may not help Ward's case to most listeners.) "He plays the game the way it needs to be played," Harrison said.

Harrison listened to the list of names on the list and said one stuck out.

"Kevin Mawae is dirty. He's a dirty dude."

Harrison went on to say the Titans, as a team, are the dirtiest in the league.

Dirty to me is doing crap out side of football and usually after the whistle (like throwing punches, biting, snapping fingers, etc.). Hines knocks the crap out of a LB and somehow it's dirty. I've never seen him not be within the "victims" peripheral.

Vince Wilfork poked Brandom Jacobs in the face = Dirty.
Rodney Harrison punching, shoving and being violent after the whistle = dirty
Albert Haynesworth stepping on a dude's unprotected face while he's laying on the ground = waaaaaaay dirty.

Hines Ward pancaking anyone = not dirty.

Surprised Tom Brady isn't on there... or would that count as roughing the skirt wearer?

granted he's not one of the ppl who's "beating your face in", but its kind of ridiculous that he can get flags thrown for him with a glance and a finger
