I think we wait. Til the mods either merge this thread or close it. Or until next week when Palmer throws deep. Either way this thread has been done.

Thread Merged. I didn't see the other one out there, but what do you think about the D?

I believe this wasn't a one game wonder. The talent to have a dominant defense is there. The trust between Mattison and our defensive players was not there in the first 5 games (I'm not gonna count the browns lol).

Mattison's changes =

Less package subsitutions - Our players were allowed to stay on the field longer than 3 or 4 plays, getting them into rythms i believe. Also i believe this keeps our better players on the field such as Trevor Pryce > Dwan Edwards. They may get tired sooner but these are world class athletes. We did see Ngata get injured though.

Return of the exotic blitz - Delayed, Overload, and DB blitzes where all used on great situations sunday, Mattison really gave the defense the chance to pin there ears back and go. Even Chris Carr got a sack! These blitzes i believe are a big reason why the deep ball wasnt used sunday and there were more screens and short passes. Also our corner's techniques were sound covering short routes, especially Foxworth.

Ray Lewis' Changes =

Ray stressed in all of his comments abotu the D that we needed to trust that the man next to them was doing there job, and i believe they are learning to trust eachother.
Also Ray wanted the Defense to be more energized, when our D gets pumped they play better he wanted players to celebrate with eachother after a sack or a PD. After the Darren Sproles stop everyone on the defense didnt run up and celebrate with ray they looked around like did we really stop them without a flag?

I think its the real deal now. I hope our offense will contend the Bengals D better than last time though

Bengals dont have Odom anymore tho. That totally changes the complexion of their defense. Not only that we get Gaither back for the rematch. Chips are even IMO.

We had trouble with the Bengals even when we had an elite defense, so lets hope this D can step up in a major way.

I completely agree with those points, although it was widely known the type of QB Orton is, which played right into our defense strengths.. My main question is, was Mattison told to change his schemes for good, or was it just the game planning for Denver??

Like the others, i love how they played almost lights out against Denver, but what i noticed was they havent challenged us down the field in a way that Palmer can throw. All in all i believe in our D and i know what we can do, so i hope Mattison brings his A game because play calling will be a major factor in stopping the bungles.

I agree. Even though I received a lot of comments about putting this thread out here it is good to see that a lot of people still do believe in our defense, instead of downing them when they go cold for awhile. We've had plenty of changes in our defensive roster in the past but we still have remained strong. I believe our defensive coordinator knows what he needs to do and that he will adjust quickly for this second half of the season. PRESSURE IS ON AND WE NOT ONLY WANT TO WIN BUT WE HAVE TO WIN.

Pressure is definitely on. :deadhorse:

I will reserve judgement until we face Palmer, not Orton. Likewise they need to face Manning and no-means-no twice. I believe they can do it, and I do not think they will give up huge plays all season long again, but we shall see. The big tests are coming up...let's see if they continue to step it up. :bitenails:

We'll find out this week against a Pro Bowl QB, Pro Bowl WR, and an emerging RB who has already torched us...

This might have been said already but I don't think the defense went anywhere. The talent in the defensive backfield isn't strong but like they did against Denver, you can mask that by hitting the QB every time he drops back to pass.

However, Denver didn't do themselves any favors by employing an extremely conservative passing game. The defense will face a much sterner test against Cincy and if they bring pressure and cover well when that pressure gets picked up, they'll be fine.

What worries is how the team does against the run. Missed tackles and a lack of gap integrity led to Benson gashing the defense all afternoon earlier this season. I don't see that happening again but anything could happen.

Well whatever weakness the defense have this year (corner back, pass rush, linebacker play) Nothing, and i mean NOTHING can make me give up hope and bash them after the agonizing '07(injure-plagued)year...Hell even the 01-02 season wasn't so hot. Its hard to be loaded with as much talent as the Ravens have on defense, and not put a decent showing for a season..

True in a sense but to me McCallister was a great CB, but the fact that we were hitting the QB each time he dropped back is what made our secondary look that much greater. Forced passes and pressured throws are what create mistakes, cause fumbles, and interceptions and hopefully they stick to that. We were and in my opinion are one of the best defenses and most respected defenses but like everyone mentioned throughout this thread we just have to stick to the way that we play defense and that's smash-mouth defense.

It's been a long time since I've watched the Raven's played this season and I am on my feet yelling "GET HIM" each time the QB drops back and we are successful doing so. Usually you couldn't pay us to pressure the QB and quarterbacks sit back and pick their target just snyping our defense. I say smack Carson Palmer every chance we get <Mod note: Please do not use all-caps when posting, per the Code of Conduct>. Without the penalties please!!!

I never brought up McAlister's name in my post. What does he have to do with anything?

To answer your main question, I believe that Mattison will permanently change the scheme, based on the awesome play by our D last sunday. Hope we pressure Palmer, early and often, to keep the heat on!

Thanks, I hope your right, I guess well all find out soon enough.. Its funny, all the intervies and shows that Mattison and Harbaugh have appeared on...they both insist that nothing was changed schemes wise.. the players just executed better.. thats bull.. but it worked so no complaints.

Yeah, I agree. When I hear that crap, I get images of Matts and Harbs wearing overalls, out on the farm pitching the theory that "Mad Cow Disease" is harmless.
