Merged: Is The Defense Back Threads

49 posts in this topic

We all will dwell on what our record should be. What will the Ravens do to quiet critics and be the team that we all know they can be. We got off to a good foot and then drastically went on a cold streak coupled with a lot of other obstacles along the way. After the buy we upset a very dominate team DENVER BRONCOS. Let's keep it going. HEY WHEN WE WON THE SUPERBOWL our record started off at 0-4. Comments welcome!!!

It will take a couple more outings like this passed Sunday to say we have fully woken up from the nap. I'll say for now we are still a bit groggy.

The coaches did a better job coaching. They benched Walker, which helped out alot. They put pressure on the QB, which they were scared to do forwhatever reason. I think we will definitely make it to the playoffs, especially if Flacco keeps having the year he's having.

The real question is, has the pass rush reached it's full potential? And can it keep it?

Our DBs are decent but they will have many more bad games. Our D lives and dies by our ability to get pressure. If we do get pressure, it makes life easier on our DBs. If we don't, our D will look like it has major deficiencies in the secondary.

Where did you get that from? We won our first two games that year, and finished 12-4.

To answer your question, what we'll do to quiet critics is simply to win football games. Winning fixes everything.

I want to see a good defensive performance again before I stop being critical of them.

One thing that I have been thinking about lately, which could be a partial reason for our slow start is that Mattison has only been on the pro level for about 2 years. I wonder if he had trouble game planning, which would explain why he and our players were not on the same page. Remember we didnt game plan a specific opponant at all during the preseason, so he wouldnt have gotten experience doing it until we started planning for the Chiefs.

I'm more inclined to say that our defensive players weren't taking any sort of break, but our defensive cordinator was too stubborn to not realize his 4-3 formations weren't going to work with the talent we have.

Gooden is good, I say ****** that we lost B. Scott and still play 4 LBs. 3-4, mixed in with our unique formations and some of the 4-3's that actually had decent success.

The talent is still there. Reed, Lewis, Suggs, Ngata, Pryce, Gregg. I think nearly all of these players are above 90 in madden. Thats how you know.

I'm surprised no one has created a thread welcoming the 3-4 back. I was EXTREMELY happy to see that back which is another reason why I think they played so well, they got back to what they are familiar with.

I'm reluctant to make such an assessment after one game. I think we all collectively hope and pray that it has, and continues to improve on discipline.

Agreed. D looks way more energized playing more 3-4 and the effect on the game was apparent. I think our D thrives on the flexibility that using 3-4 as the primary lineup provides, as well as freeing up the backs to assist with coverage in the backfield.

I'm sorry I believe that was pre-season stats you were right about our 2-2 start.

I agree that we need to wait a couple more games to judge the D.

Although, that being said... I see no reason why the D wouldn't come back out there like they did against Denver. There is no reason for Mattison to go back to his old defensive schemes. Our D improved 100% and looks to be back to form.

Plus, Ray and crew want revenge on the Bengals, and I don't see them taking another win from us.

No matter who wins your game this week it will be a win for Sixburgh. My preference would be a Raven win since that would put us in 1st place in the North.

theres no guarantee of that. I think the ravens have a better chance in cincy than the steelers in denver.

Wow. Should the Broncos even show up on Sunday?

I think you're making quite an assumption that the Steelers will win in Denver this week.

As far as this thread topic is concerned, I think that Harbaugh woke Mattison up by explaining that his basic college schemes don't work up here and he had better change his thought process real quick if he wants to retain his job. I also wouldn't be surprised if Ray Lewis had a hand in helping Mattison out as far as what kind of schemes they should be running to be effective. Something happened behind closed doors after the Vikings loss that we will never know about.

Exactly it all goes back to the coaching. The plays Mattison were running weren't good...not to mention the dumb penalities we got on ourselves, and the forever cheating refs. If we apply the pressure to the Bengals, double Ochocinco ocassionaly, we definitely will win, and decisively.

agreed one game doesn't really proove anything after a couple of mediocre defensive showings in a row. what no one has failed to mention is the fact that we beat up on a team defensively that doesn't really have an all star QB which is where our D has been struggling this year (Carson Palmer, Brett Favre, Phillip Rivers, Tom Brady).

What would prove to me that we have woken up is a BIG defensive showing VS the Bengals followed up by another one vs Peyton and the Colts two weeks following (I don't want to seem cocky but seriously what team is scared by the Browns?)

off topic question but why do both our Monday night games have to be on the road? AT least our Sunday night game at M&T

Time to put the ravens defense back to sleep.
[/quote]

You mean like you put us to sleep last year? Or your 17 point thrashing of our defense this year? Talk is cheap.

Some of my friends are saying "hold your beaks" when talking about the dominant "D" being all the way back. Some are saying that the Broncos:

1. Did not throw the ball deep but one time and when they did they were successful. They believes that more deep throws would have unraveled the Ravens secondary.

2. Ran too many screens and curl passes.

3. Brandon Marshal showed he had lost complete interest in the game after the first half when he realized they were not going to open up the offense.

4. The Broncos flat out quit in the forth quarter when they couldn't "out-physical" the Ravens.

What do you think? Is the "Dominant - D" back? ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, Or What?

I think we wait. Til the mods either merge this thread or close it. Or until next week when Palmer throws deep. Either way this thread has been done.
