I see he's getting the carries now, but why wasn't Rice the goal line back in the first place? I mean what's harder than tackling someone with such a low centre of gravity and so strong?
Most of those times, Ray had done all the work getting down there. Maybe it was his rest period. Who knows? Maybe they just want to keep Willis in the game (frame of mind) in case something were to happen to Ray. I do agree that Ray is just as if not more inclined to score at the goal line. It is really hard to find him especially when you have 22 men that close to the line of scrimmage.

But, seriously, when was the last time MCGahee had a rush for over 3 yards?
Um, if he got the ball more you would see it....he had like 1 attempt for -2 yards. Even Rice's first carry was a negative gain. You need to get the ball more to be effective. You will see more of willis in late november and december for those cold weather games.

Yeah I think Willis was the end-zone back solely because Rice did the dirty work just to get close. The whole point of our running-back-by-committee was to keep our guys fresh so that any one of them could break a big play at any moment. It just seems as if they dont need to rotate so much now because Rays bustin out big plays left and right.

Now here's an interesting question... does anybody think Rice will ever be considered as the NFLs best back? Even though he leads the league in all purpose yards people are still all over AP. I'm sure there are other backs that people rank above Rice as well. What are your thoughts?

My answer is heavily biased right now, as if I could choose I'd definitely pick Rice as my feature back. AP is an amazing athelete and probably the best at solely running the ball but i think Rice has far more value as an all-around back who can run in between the tackles, around the edge, and even catch the ball and make people miss.

Sorry but Rice was good today but, not that good. Mcgahee should have gotten more touches in 1st down situations. Rice had what about 6 carries for negative yardage?

They are just not giving Mcgahee any chance to get anything rolling. It'd be nice to see them evening out the carries alittle bit. Instead of Mcgahee getting like 2-3 carries a game.

Truth is he is the better early down back.

I would go as far as saying Ray Rice is the next Maurice Jones Drew if not better lol barring injuries. lol But if you watch MJD its like the same guy lol.

There is a reason that Rice is getting the bulk dude. Face it Mcgahee just isnt what he used to be. I mean I love the guy but its Rices time to shine. Can you imagine what rice would do if he was given 30 carries a game ! I take Rice over Mcgahee anyday. Plus if rice keeps growing we will be unstoppable. Especially with our O line!!!!!

Today you look at Flacco and Rice back there and think, wow, we are set for years to come at those positions. Both played very well against a tough defense, huge credit to both for their performances!

The versatility of Ray Rice cannot be understated. The patience, instictiveness for holes, cutting ability, receiving skills, pass blocking... he is a bonafide pro bowler.
That's what I'm thinking. Our offense feels so stacked right now, even without a 'big time wr' that everybody seems to think we need. If our defense maintains the form it had today, we'll be unstoppable. We got tons of pressure on Orton, and our corners played with sound technique and took away Denver's dink-and-dunk routine.

If Rice doesn't make the pro bowl then I'll refuse to vote for it ever again haha. He's got the physical skill set of MJD but he can catch and make people miss like LT used to, so I mean damn thats just scary.

When Ray Lewis retires, at least I'll be comforted by the fact that another Ray will be in Baltimore for hopefully a long, long time. Maybe we should start drafting more people named Ray, they seem to always make waves in b-more when they land on the Ravens haha.

when ray rice gets 172 rushin yards on 8 carries he can be considered MJD.

I would compare him to westbrook if anything.

So we have comparisons to Maurice Jones-Drew, Brian Westbrook, and LaDanian Tomlinson. It doesn't even matter really, the fact that he's being mentioned on the same level as these guys speaks volumes in itself. In the end, Ray Rice is gonna be Ray Rice, and maybe one day instead of comparing him to all these big names, we'll be comparing other up-and-comers to him.

agreed! I love the guy and hope that he keeps producing like this for years to come. Is he still leading all rbs with all purpose yards?

Edit: I'm pretty sure he still is, i'll do some research and pull up the stats i can find to try and back this up lol.

:wootwoot:

There's 2 reasons why I think Ray is kickin' so much tail this year. The first is the fact that Cam's system emphasizes the running back as a runner and a reciever. He did the same thing with LT. The second is all the effort dedicated to improving his skill set and balance in the offseason. He took a look at himself and saw what he needed to improve on, and did everything he could to get better in those areas. He has upped his game to another level and it's showing. He's an all-around back in every sense, and I look forward to cheering him and the Ravens on for years to come.

with chris joihnson's giant game today, he is actually leading the league in yards from scrimmage. But rice is a close second and unless johnson has another monster game like today im thinking that rice can probably reclaim #1. he is a very talented back physically and we're already seeing him start to progress. Flacco has gotten a lot of talk about how quickly he's progressing but would argue that Rice is learning just as quickly. I hope these two both turn out to be our franchise players for years, cause then our offense will be potent for a long while.

Let be honest, Ray did well against the "top D" but we all knew the Broncos were frauds. When Ray can show he can run over the Steelers and in the postseason i'll be very happy.

Rice is a beast....no doubt! i am glad that he is getting the majority of the work load...however....we still have McGahee and McClain to just pound on the defense to soften them up for Rice to deliver the KO blow on a big run!

Well, according to my research, Adrian Peterson actually leads the league now, with Johnson biting at his heels. All stats come from nfl.com and who knows if theyre right or not lol.

Ray Rice ~ 525 yards rushing on 96 attempts for a 5.5 average gain per rush. This puts him at no. 9 for rushing in the league. As for recieving, Ray has 38 catches for 349 yards, a 9.2 average, which gives him a total of 874 yards and is good for the highest total recieving yardage of any RB.

Chris Johnson ~ a whopping 824 yards on 119 carries for a 6.9 average. Leads the league in rushing yardage, though through the air he only has 137 yards on 18 grabs (7.6 avg) which gives him a total of 961.

Maurice Jones-Drew ~ number 6 in the league rushing with 640 yards on 116 attempts and he, too, has a 5.5 yard average. Through the air he has 27 grabs 161 yards (6.0 avg) and a total of 801 all purpose yards.

Adrian Peterson ~ 784 yards on the ground on 163 attempts gives him a 4.8 avg rush while he also has 19 grabs for 189 yards (good for a 9.9 avg). This puts his total at 973 which means he's actually the league's leading all-purpose back.

What strikes me the most is how huge numbers are coming from guys with relatively low numbers of touches. Adrian Peterson I feel almost doesn't belong on this list because he gets the ball so much more than the other guys and it's only natural that his stats would be pretty stacked. But seriously, just look at the amount of production that teams are getting out of those guys even when they don't have as many chances to break a big one. They're all for real, but man idc if Ray isn't the league leader anymore, I'd still take him over any of 'em. He's our guy, and that's that lol.

Well think about it. If we have Rice as a 3 down back, and give him the ball the same number of times as Adrian Peterson then that's an extra 67 carries. Even if you assume that his production drops to say, 4.5 yards per carry due to the workload, his rushing total becomes about 734 yards. That's an extra 209 yards! Add to that his recieving total which I'll assume would remain the same, and his total yardage would reach 1083 yards! That's insane, now I only wish we used him more haha.

edit: logical mistake in calculating stuff. still a remarkable thought though lol.

It's been such a pleasure to watch Rice. I knew he was going to have a good season after watching him in pre-season but I didn't know he'd be this effective. Whether it's running out of draws and stretch plays, or catching the ball out of the backfield, he's simply electric.

I'm still not convinced he can tote the rock 30+ times a game over the course of a season. But that doesn't matter. As long as the team gives him some breathers like they did yesterday, Rice should be a weapon for years to come.

Hypothetical question. To me this is a no brainer but if you had the choice now.

DeSean Jackson or Ray Rice?

(Jackson was taken 6 spots before Rice so we would have needed to trade up but we certainly could have)

I would take Rice easily. As much of a playmaker as Jackson is catching the ball and on returns, so is Rice.

And both are tiny for their positions. But I take Rice as well. Can't really justify either way. I just feel like DeSean is built around special plays and returns. The life a return man is fairly short.

On a more serious note since some people can't recognize blatant sarcasm, I would like to point out that you're pretty uneducated if you believe height is a major factor for any position other than QB, line and a red zone corner route WR. Weight, speed, skill and strength are more important, give and take more so for each position. Rice makes people miss, that's his job, and height plays no beneficial role in that. There is a difference of being small and being short. And, I believe some people probably believe those two words mean the same thing. I think some people are just mad that a short guy is proving most people are idiots.
