Ravens Try-Out Two Kickers

31 posts in this topic

according to numerous sources including an Aaron Wilson "tweet"...

With Hauschka dealing with an ankle injury, the Ravens tried out Mike Nugent and Connor Barth on Saturday, but didn't sign either... Precautionary measure?, or is someone on a short leash?

Since Hauschka is listed as "probable", I would guess that Steve had better kick accurately tomorrow... ;)

If there was any doubt to his ability, health-wise, to play tomorrow, they'd make him inactive, and sign a kicker for one game only, to be sure. You can't be without a kicker.

Precautionary measure due to injury. Mike Nugent hasn't exactly been Mr. Reliable throughout his career (missing a couple of key kicks for the Jets), while I honestly know nothing of Connor Barth.

Barth was undrafted (not surprising for a kicker) in the 2008 draft. Seems he's played for the Chiefs and competed with Dan Carpenter for the kicking job in Miami (and we know who won that job). He's 10/12 on field goals, however he missed two field goals kicks in one game, one being a 50 yard, game winning kick as time expired.

As long as it's only a temporary thing, either one will be serviceable. Although at first I thought you meant for the full time kicking duties (when I initially saw the topic title).

Kordell Stewart had to punt for a game or two when he was in Baltimore, so you never know. XD

Worse come to worse I'm sure Sam Koch can kick a short FG.

I never understood why there isn't more versatility when it comes to the Punter and the Kicker. You would think there would be athletes that would be able to excel in both, saving contract money for franchises.

I hear ya. You'd think if George Blanda, albeit in a different era, could be a great kicker and quarterback, there'd be at least one punter/kicker in the league.

All I can figure is that no one can be a great punter and kicker. Maybe great kicker, decent punter, etc. But this league is such that everyone wants a specialist who's working constantly at his one role.

It's a shame, you used to see a guy like Bronko Nagurski go from DT to FB to plenty of other positions. Now, we pretend like the switch from RT to LT is like the difference between chess and shotputting.

You cannot compare anyone to Boller. Let alone compare the overall value of a kicker to that of a starting quarterback. Yes, kickers can lose games (as we saw in Minnesota), but shoddy quarterbacks lose seasons. Not to mention, Boller was our 1st round pick, Hauschka... undrafted.

Kickers are "human" just as any other player and need time to develop the mental toughness required to make those game winning field goals. Matt Stover was 16 for 21 in 1991 (his rookie year), 21 for 29 in 1992 and 16 for 22 in 1993. Not exactly stellar #s for a guy that went on to be one of the most consistent kickers in the game.

They shoulda signed Stover as we all have said , yeah I know he is getting old and everything but we shoulda rode that horse til it broke down . Now he is a Colt which I hope does not come back to haunt us in a few weeks with Vinateri being out . This guy waited for the phone to ring and next thing you know he is with the Colts and we miss a game winning kick . Probably was a sweet weekend for him . It's hard not to believe in carma when stuff like that happens . We will be ok but DAMN !!!!!!

As it was said last week, you cannot say for certain Stover would have made the kick from that distance. You said we should have "rode that horse til it broke down", and sadly for Stover it is breaking down. His distance is nothing like it used to be, and we don't have room for two kickers on the team. Hauschka just gave us more distance then Stover, and he's young. He can very well work on his accuracy and be a good kicker.

I'm glad Haushka (whom me and my friends have officially nicknamed 'Finkle' after missing the first clutch kick of his career against the Vikings) made all his kicks today. I want the guy to do well (since he's on the Ravens) and it's good to see that he's at least tough enough mentally to leave the Minnesota game behind him.

I still dont understand why we didnt keep him and then have Gano for kickoffs, and 50+ yarders. The excuse was, well we dont want to carry two kickers on the active roster because then we'd have to leave another player at a skill position inactive. We'd be talking about a guy like David Tyree or Frank Walker, who wasnt active today. Stover's clutch kicking would have more of an impact than any of those guys do on ST.

Quit dumping on Kyle. I mean Boller did set NFL records for unforced fumbles and being tripped by his own linemen IN THE SAME SEASON! What other team can claim that??

Did anyone notice that Stover was 4 for 4 in his first Colt game?

31 yds
33 yds
38 yds
40 yds

Good for him.

Yeah, I was keeping the Indy game open on Gamecast just to see how Stover was doing, even if it pained me a bit to see him kicking for Indy.

My bad, I'm sorry. I cannot believe we just let a recording setting quarterback like that walk now =\ lol

Watched highlights of a recent St Louis Rams game where KB went to pass and the ball just fell out of his hands..classic.. brought back soooo many memories. Glad that TV brick my wife bought me was made out of foam........

I was TOTALLY for getting rid of stover and moving on. Stover missed a few last season and was slipping. It hurt alot keeping that extra roster spot for a kicker. However now Specially with stover going 4-4 today I strongly question the move.

Just for the record, that wasnt Stover's first game, it was his second game for the colts. And ironically, everyone who said that stover would have made the field goal that haushka(sp) missed evidently didnt watch the colts game that came on immediately after the Vikings game. He missed a 40+ yard field goal right after Hauska(again, SP) did. :34853_shakehead:
