Demon's Souls (Ps3)

9 posts in this topic

Demon's Souls is a PS3 exclusive and is to the PS3 what Shadow of the Colossus was to the PS2. It lacked an advertising Juggernaut and mainly spread by word of mouth and I must say I was glad to be one of the few to hear of it. It came out around a month ago but many stores didn't get it until a couple weeks after so it is pretty hard to find unless you shop online.
Most reviews claim this game is incredibly hard and is only for gamers that have patience and can learn from their mistakes and they aren't lying. Dying is apart of this game and the sooner one realizes it the better.
Unfortunately there is little to no story telling except through the minimal dialog but it doesn't detract from an addictive game experience. This game can last you around 40 or so hours your first play through and then you unlock new game plus and from the statistics it supposedly gets 8% harder every time.
The upgrade system is relatively good and has stats to accommodate any play style whether you want to be an Archer, Melee user, or Magic user. If you get this game I highly advise you use this website for support...

There are spoilers on the site in terms of the bosses section so I suggest you avoid that unless you want help on strategies to defeat them.

It's been out for a month? :o

Someone recommended it too me, but it sounds a little too hard core for my taste. You can't even pause the game and you lose everything when you die. I'd get too frustrated lol.

It honestly isn't that hard until New Game+ which is of course optional after you beat the game.

I heard that this game constantly auto saves so that you can't just restart the game if you mess up, and that if you die in "ghost mode" (or something to that effect) then you have to start the entire game over. To me, that sounds too difficult and time consuming, but perhaps we have different definitions of "hard." How does Demon Souls compare to another rpg, like say, Final Fantasy?

I've been contemplating about getting this game. But I wasn't quite the fan of King's Field, which apparently this game is the successor to. I'm thinking I'll probably give it a rent, and judge it for myself. I'm a sucker for RPGs, after all.

Your spot on that it autosaves after every action but you don't start entire game over. The autosave feature is to make you think about your actions so you don't go killing all the good characters that can benefit you. Because once they are gone, they are gone until you start your game again.

Pertaining to dying this is what happens,

Say you are fighting through the level and you fall off a cliff, well all the souls you gathered are now gone temporarily (use souls to level up), you lose your body form so you have 50% health(You can have 75% if you find an item called the cling ring which is impossible to miss tbh and its in the first mission 1-1) but you retain all your equipment and items and any gates you opened stay opened. Now the part you must live with is that if you die on your way back to your bloodstain you lose those souls for ever it sounds like a big deal but you will find it really isn't as souls aren't that hard to get. To regain your body form you can do any of the following...

1. Defeat a boss(There are bosses at the end of each level 1-1, 1-2, 1-2, 1-4, 2-1,2-2,2-3,3-3, etc)
2. Use a Blue Eye stone and join another persons game and help them defeat a boss
3. If you die as a blue phantom in another world if the person has a certain spell he/she can resurrect you in your world with your body form back
4. Use Black Eye stone to join another persons game and kill them before they reach the demon

When you die levels generally aren't too long so when you start from the beginning it isn't that bad but the enemies do respawn. But seriously if you summon blue phantoms frequently this game can be 10x easier. In comparison to FF, like I stated above the only thing that detracts from this is there is no story telling other then the adventure you create for yourself unlike FF. Someone else described this perfectly as the child of Shadow of the Colossus and Fable put together. You may think playing a single level over and over again would be boring and me and my friends did too but afterwords we really actually enjoyed it more because the atmosphere and level design is flawless.

If I am correct it is made by the same people that developed King's Field but it is not a sequel. Unless that is what you are saying then I am sorry I misunderstood.

Yeah, it's not quite a sequel, but (as someone put it, I can't remember who), it's more like the "spiritual successor" to King's Field.
