the last thing i wanna see is another close game. A win is a win. But i hope we win by 13+
I don't want to see a close game either. Those are almost always wins for the other team.

+1

I've been arguing this for weeks, and some people here continue to counter with the fact that the Ravens should continue passing-passing-passing, because we've had offensive success, and scored points.

Well, yes, scoring points is the goal of the offense, but scoring the same number of points, while gaining TOP (thereby keeping the D off the field) would be preferable. Last year, the Ravens were #1 in TOP, this year we're #19. Am I the only one who thinks this may be a factor in the fall-off of the Defense?
When you play from behind, you pretty much have to throw the ball to get back in the game. We should have gone to to the pass much earlier in the Vikings game, gained control, and then used the run to grind out the clock. As we have seen in years past, the run is much more effective in the later stages of the game. And the defense was not on the field that long when the Vikes scored 2 touchdowns 9 minutes into the first quarter! Tough to overcome that big of a deficit with the run.

We now have a great weapon in the arm of Joe Cool! Yes, I agree; Use the run to better control TOP. But use the the threat of the pass to set up the run.

I really didn't want to get into a debate about third down defense. What my point is that the defense can't get off the field....period!

Unfortunatly I used the term "getting off the field on third down" for the "lack of a shorter term." But the defensive problems are not only JUST third down defensive stops. This is a classic example of the problem with stats.

What doesn't show up in your third down stats is this; ,,,, in addition to the Ravens third down inefficiency, the Ravens are giving up "big-plays" on FIRST and SECOND downs too.
Now I think you've hit the nail on the head. Big plays - Long passes allowed, long runs allowed.
In fact, the Ravens DEFENSE HAS BEEN absolutely "horrible" from outside the 20 to inside the 20 on defense. They don't stop anybody on ANY downs between the 20's. Their "red-zone" defense is not that bad though.

Whatever route the opponent wants to take to get to the "red-zone" is always open. Once they get to the red-zone," though, the Ravens appear to make a goal line stand. But there is almost no resistance between the 20's. This is what keeps the defense on the field so long.
Again, agreed. The Ravens are actually 2nd (to Pitt) in the NFL in TDs allowed from the RedZone.

Let's hope our discussions this week center around which unit is better, the Offense or the Defense!!! :)

It's Gameday! :)

I have no problem with using the pass to set up the run. Pittsburgh has changed to this M.O., and it's worked for them lately - Mendenhall is averaging 5.4 yds/carry this year - and "Fast" Willie Parker averaged 3.8 last year in a run-to-set-up-the-pass strategy for them last year.

My problem has been the Offense not rushing Rice more, regardless of when - he's averaging 6 yds/carry!

We'll see what happens today. I don't give a damn who's right or wrong about what, I just want a win.

The team's success > any of our opinions. (Just being honest)

While I agree to most of your points, numbers don't always tell the whole story. If you go back the the Ravens loss at Minnesota it seemed like the Defense was on the field the whole first half.
The D was on the field the whole first half because they kept allowing first downs.... and alot of times the first downs came on 1st and 2nd down... not until the vikings scored the 2nd TD did our defense looked like it could have been a D from the past.... but once we caught up having the score like 17-14... the D falls apart again allowing 30 points to the vikes... we catch up again for the lead 31-30... then the D allows big plays/big penalties.. alowing the vikes to put it up 33-31... then we drive down the field and haushka misses wide left

not throwing anyone to the wolves here, but if there is one position that I do not trust at all on our team its the kicker... if he made that he would be the hero... if he didn't.. well we all know what happened

That's fair and I can agree with that. It's all about the win.

Mods? Now that the game has been played, can we change the title for this thread to "Our Defense Burns Broncos"

Finally a complete effort by both the offense and defense. The secondary played good, their longest play was bs (penalty against foxworth) heck even Carr didn't do anything BAD on special teams, and even had a sack

Agreed. I think the top stories for this game are the following:

1. Mattison gets "rhythem" down for defensive scheme .

2. Secondary gains solid "footing" (literally).

3. Special Teams wins field position battle 1st time for season to dominate Broncos.

4. Offense continues to do what it does against vaunted Broncos Defense.

Flacco's play today is not a top story because he is "nearly" always flawless. This is not new for him. No, he is not PERFECT, but he just kinda did what we always expect him to do today.

Notice we won the TOP? Big difference !
Yup, I did notice. The Ravens played with a lead, good field position from special teams, and a dominant "D" for the whole game. You will win the TOP stat when these kinda stars line up.

Looked like the Old Ravens (+) the New Offense out there today. If that's the formula for the rest of the season, then Indy, Green Bay, Cincy and Pittsburg had better look out! :225:

I don't expect us to win the Indy game either but you wouldn't see me complaining if we did. Peyton has been spanking us for years and years and years. But I do expect us to carry the momentum into Cincy and come next week I think we will all be back at 5-3 including the Steelers.

Yeah, Indy will still rape us, lol.
Well, if the Ravens team that showed up today, should show up when Indy comes to town????? Then Indy may have a problem.

Indy was only able to score 18 against San Fran at the Luc. I feel like we are energized and ready to make a run, who wants to step in front of a moving bus?

Reality check: Indy scraped by with a win today (18-14) and Manning hasn't thrown a td for quite some time.

If they put up less then 20 they're toast.

Indy is blessed with an easy schedule. Anytime time they face a somewhat tough team, they struggle. Luckily for us, they have to come to Balitmore.

They are beatable. But with our recent history of letting high-powered QBs kill us, it will be very very tough.

werd. Denvers short passing game and inept running game played right into our hands.

The 49ers D is no joke. I mean, addai has to throw a pass to get a TD on them.

I see the Indy game being a shootout, not a blowout like past years
