Speaking of Japenese movies. Anyone see the movie "Audition," it starts off real slow. But then drives with a kicker. Pardon the pun.

Heard of it, but never saw it, and not planning to. People have told me it's good, but I'm not down with the whole cute-girl-is-actually-kinda-really-disturbed idea. Makes me afraid of the women in my life.
Also, the idea of her keeping this mutilated dude in a burlap sack and him eating her vomit makes me literally sick, just thinking about it. That was how my one friend started to describe the movie. lol.

As you should be. Women when angry, are more scarier than any of these horror movies we've talked about.

13 Ghosts (I just love this movie)
The original one or the remake with Matthew Lillard? I haven't seen the original yet but plan on it. I actually like the remake with Lillard and Tony Shalub. It is a definite sleeper for a quality horror movie.

Japanese horror movies are generally scarier than American horror movies.

1) The Japanese have a different standard of censorship in film than Americans do. This is ironic, given that Japan is notorious for its cultural conservativism. The Japanese can get away with much more than Americans can in film.
2) Japanese horror films are generally more creative, relying more on psychology and storytelling than visual. However, when visuals are used, they're still pretty disturbing nonetheless.

Another piece of irony is that their TV shows are garbage compared to even our trash. These shows make use of lots of text and graphics to fill up the screen, which is extremely distracting to western audiences but is the norm in Japan. As a consolation, at least all that screen real estate cuts down on the number of commercial breaks taken. But otherwise, everything on Japanese television is intentionally-exaggerated. We view these shows as absurd, but that absurdity is intentional.
Their game shows are much better than ours. Their cartoons and comics suck IMO. Europe has the best commercials.

Couldn't have said it better. Japanese horror really is a lot scarier because you really have no idea what to expect. With American horror, you can pretty much guess what's around the bend...
Also, Hollywood thinks that using loud noises associated with quick movements makes a movie scary. It may make you jump when you're watching it, but Japanese horror movies will keep you awake at night.

I loved Ringu, I actually saw it by myself before The Ring came out so I had no idea what to expect. I ended up finishing the movie as far away from the screen as possible. Audition is another great horror movie that sucks you in with drama in the beginning of the movie.

I recently saw Let the Right One In. It's a vampire movie from Norway, I think. It's the best vampire movie I've ever seen. It's even better than Twilight.

Halloween, the original John Carpenter version. Michael Myers would just manage to appear out of nowhere and kill people, and it seemed nothing would stop him. Don't ever reference the Rob Zombie version to me, I absolutely hated his version.
What I loved about the original version was that scary factor that you never understood why this six year old kid just snapped and killed his sister, then comes back and starts killing others, especially for coming from a family that seemed to be pretty normal. Rob Zombie sits there and makes Michael Myers about 11, and he has a trashy family with a drunk father who calls him a **** and he's bullied at school because he's poor and a misfit. So of course he snaps on Halloween because his sister says something that pushes him over the edge. That completely ruins Michael Myers and makes him a cliche.
The Exorcist
The Haunting in Connecticut
The Others (My friend and I were speechless throughout the movie)

I'll have to see Audition, the name alone is intriguing, considering I wouldn't expect a movie with that title to be horror.

I completely agree with this. Michael Myers is supposed to be just plan evil. It's definately scarier that way than being some poor abused kid who turns violent.

Exactly. Plus, in using the idea of a poor abuse kid turning violent, it's only feeding into cookie-cutter images that we already have as a society about how kids are damaged by their environment, etc.

In other words, it's just plain boring and done to death (no pun intended.) It's much scarier to just have someone be the personification of evil; you don't need justification for it, because their justification is that they're evil to the core. That may sound convenient, but so is using an abusive environment to spawn a horror movie serial killer. Too many horror movies (well, movies in general) try to justify the antagonist's actions. Sometimes, that isn't necessary for character development. The element of mystery can work to a director's advantage there. Plus, it comes across as pretentious to give everyone justification for what they're doing. Let that justification be subtle rather than outright obvious.

Does watching the Browns count as a horror show?

No seriously watch Midnight Meat Train. That movie is INSANE.
I just watched that a couple nights ago. It takes a complete turn at the end. He should have just let that asian girl disappearance go.

I just watched "The Descent" last night. It's a pretty good horror flick.

Its not a spoiler, its just the beginning of the story. Guy looks into a girls disappearance and it leads to more than he bargained for. Don't worry. He didn't give ANYTHING away.

Another Clive Barker movie just came out, its decent. Book of Blood.

The books were better.

Anything by Dario Argento is usually pretty scary. He's one of the few directors whose use of graphic violence doesn't detract the movie. I highly recommend either Suspiria or Opera.

Don't bother with watching Children of the Corn, I was so bored with it. I may try to see Paranormal Activity tonight.

Maybe its a culture thing too, Japanese directors seem to know how to create tension and atmosphere.

They also know how to make movies that don't suck.

my problem with horror movies today is that they all seem to have to have comedy in them...um when I laugh at the movie it's hard to be scared.

also not the best movie ever but I enjoyed Cloverfield and with a sequel on the way makes me wonder what it could pick up. I won't say much more about it cause i don't want to spoil if no one saw and I don't know how to do that spoiler thing(how do you do it>?)

This is untrue. You should watch Dead-Alive. It was made by Peter Jackson years before he did Lord of the Rings. It's scary and hilarious at the same time. Some movies can work that way, like the Evil Dead trilogy.

If you don't want to laugh at all, during a modern horror movie. Check out "The Haunting in Connecticut," "Quarantine" or "The Descent". Not a damn thing funny about those.

I own that one too. I just think Dead-Alive is a better way to get into Jackson's early stuff.

Dead Alive is a whole different genre of horror. It's hard to believe that Peter Jackson went from the oozing Dead Alive to the Lords of the Rings.

So much oozing puss!

Some of you might laugh, but when I was a kid Amityville II The Possession scared the crap out of me. One scene in particular:
nighttime in a thunder storm: The older brother is stalking around the house killing the family and the two kids are across the hall from eachother (little boy in the dining room - little girl in the living room) and the little boy is telling his sister to stay back and hide. She say's okay and then there's a flash of lightening and behind her is her possessed brother with a rifle and a demonic face! Then all you hear is the gun shot.
I wouldn't watch it alone when I was a kid.

I totally forgot one move. I wouldn't watch it again because it freaks me out to much. Now I am afraid of going to Mexico and any type of ivy.

The Ruins.

One of the most disturbing horror movies ever. I wouldn't rank it anywhere near the best, but one of the most disturbing for sure.
