Ravens Restructure Gregg, J Johnson Deals

The article suggests the team is doing this to free up room to sign Ngata long term. The way the defense is playing right now I don't think anyone on that side of the ball should be rewarded with a big time contract.

Jarret Johnson actually deserves a raise instead of a pay cut; he's been the workhorse of this defense for the past few years and has gotten almost no credit, even from us fans. He's only just now having his breakout season, mainly because Suggs has disappeared (possibly due to conditioning) and Ngata has been taking on double and triple-teams.

Jarret Johnson's base salary was cut in half? What?

I don't know anything about the financial nitty-gritty of football, nor do I really care, but that seems like a joke considering that Johnson has been making big plays for a solid three years, and is now making big plays along with the routine ones.

Gregg has been nonexistent, but Johnson? Why?

Ngata needs to be extended, yes, but do we really have to blindside hard-working players like Johnson to do so? Just "restructure" the contracts of every single member of the secondary until they're not earning anything and off the team, bring in some BR.com forum members, and you will only see a slight dropoff.

I agree completely. JJ has stood out in my opinion.

I agree with that. I started a topic about PFW validating that very argument.

Signing Ngata long-term is great but does anyone know if anymore cap space will be freed up in the off-season? It's a foregone conclusion McGahee is gone but will the by-out count against the cap? And what Rolle's contract?

From the sound of it. They are just decreasing their base salary for this year. And on top of it they are getting an additional signing bonus. All in all. Johnson is losing 600K, and Gregg 170K. Ravens are just trying to skirt around the salary cap. Who knows what other incentive they gave Johnson and Gregg to sign....maybe free dinners at Applebees?

Theres gotta be a bump for them on the back end. I dont understand why someone would take a voluntary overall pay cut. Less now, more more later I understand...But less now, and the same or less later doesnt make sense...

But if the move is to sign Ngata long term then I dont care what it takes, get it done.

The players didn't take less money. They are both getting the same amount. What's complicating the calculations is because the players have already taken paychecks at the original contract amount for the first six games.

For Johnson:
He got paid $235,294 ($4m/17 weeks) for six weeks +
$116,647 ($1.983m/17 weeks) for the remaining eleven weeks +
$1.305m signing bonus =
$4 million

I knew I missed an oversight. Your right on point. They are still getting paid the same just sliced a different way.

Exactly, now why are the Ravens doing this? They wouldn't do it for the heck of it. There's a reason. Could there be secret negotiations going on with Ngata? (I hope).

There's no "secret negotiations" -- negotiations are always ongoing between players' agents and teams during a contract year or when a contract year is coming up. As the article stated, this is essentially planning ahead for when the time comes to draw up a contract sheet.

as much as im for signing ngata im against this as well JJ deserves a pay increase. i hate how we can waste money on a te that we dont use and a draft pick that we dont use and a trash that we call cb's but we take the money away from the true players. if we keep this up we will turn into the redskins god help us.

No, we'll only be the Redskins if we start overpaying for big-named free agents.

JJ has done nothing but play football since he stepped in for Thomas. I think my personal favorite play was when he stripped Mcnabb of the ball right out of his hand. That would make a cool sig (if Gifs were still allowed as sigs)

There's no cap next year. No ramifications for bad contracts. ;)

Carr signed for 2 years, $5 million total.

No, accept it, there will be. Which sucks for us, because if we kept all of the talent we could have, had there been no CAP, we would be sooooo set at LB. We could have traded for a CB or WR.

It's a 2-year, $5 mil deal (or something low like that.) Basically, he can be cut after the season without a penalty to the cap, I believe; he'd just be paid whatever money is still owed that was guaranteed to him (which probably wasn't much.) Not exactly sure, though.

Are you talking about Bart Scott? How would we be set with LB? We only have 1 big play LB. Trade what for a CB or WR?

Yup, there is no cap now scheduled for 2010, but if you can't imagine the NFL becoming like MLB (Yankees and Red Sox) you had better believe that a cap WILL BE IN PLACE or there will be no football for 2010. Here is where the SMART MONEY is landing though. I've talked to my CPAabout this and now I'm ready to talk;

1. The issue which makes restructuring a possibility is not popularity, performance, or amount of contract. The REAL ISSUES are GUARANTEED MONEY and SIGNING BONUSES.

2. JJ in 2007 signed a 5 yr deal for 21.7 mill. He had 8.1 mill guaranteed and a 2.7 mill bonus. His base for 2009 is 2.0 mill and for 2010/11 is 3.5 mill. JJ's cap# for 2009 is 3.3 mill. There is room for renegotiation in JJ's contract and Ozzie asked for it.

3. K. Gregg in 2007 signed a 4 yr 20.3 mill deal, but only 3.5 mill was guaranteed. He has a 690,000 signing bonus and his 09 base is 1.9 mill, 10 base is 3 mill, and 11-12 base is 3.5 mill. KG has a 4.0 mill cap number for 2009, because of the bonus, but his contract can be renegotiated to help the team in cap space.

Have a headache now..... me too. But this issue is how th eGM get's his swag on. It's notjust trades and free agents. The greatest skill of a NFL GM is cap management. The NE Patriots are phenominal on it. Just ask ALL PRO Richard Seymore.
Not only that, but Bill Belichick basically pimped Richard Seymour to the Raiders because he knew the Raiders would be willing to pay the cap figure he's due this season and he'd be a free agent after this season; so not only do the Patriots absolve themselves of his cap hit, but Seymour still gets his money elsewhere and could conceivably go back to the Patriots after this season as a free agent and get back with a winner.

Seymour says his holdout was because of the thought of re-locating his family -- but Seymour would go back to the Pats in a heartbeat and understands this situation, just as Jason Taylor did when he was cut by the Redskins after being traded there by the Dolphins, only to return to Miami this season. It's all a chess match.
