24 posts in this topic

Ok look this time last year we had the same record ok thats first second look what we did last year everyone needs to chill out and relize we are a slow starting team always have been after this bye week is over if i had to guess the discipline will be back in the team as you all know 1 play in our 3 losses is the only reason we lost one missed play we are playing with everyone!! after the bye we come out of the gate stong and get back to playing like ravens

While I agree the team was here last year, the defense didn't look so bleak. I STILL think they have the personnel to improve and actually be a good defense again but the coaches(specifically Mattison) need to recognize their mistakes and correct them.

Offensively, I'm really not worried. Cam has done a lot and as long as he doesn't produce a gameplan like the one he came up with against Cincy, the offense should continue to score.

Last year we had a lot more confidence in our defense and it's ability to make stops. This year after 6 weeks, not so much. Not sure you can teach our CB's to cover and press better than they have in 2 weeks. The D-Line has consistently under-achieved in most games. Our players aren't tackling as well as we know they can etc etc. There are a lot of things that need fixing on the defensive side starting with the players - they don't seem to be playing as hungry as they normally do.
Writer for Carrol County times summed it up the best... "A suspect secondary, an inconsistent pass rush, poor tackling, lots of penalties, slow starts on both sides of the football, late-game breakdowns and one flubbed field goal from kicker Steve Hauschka."

Apart from Hauscka's kicking and the penalties, I don't see the rest of the above being easily fixed.

Agreed! The D last year is what kept us in alot of games. Without the D we can have great offense numbers and sit home when the playoffs start and think about the draft. Mattison better do some soul searching and do what we do best or atleast try consistently cause when he's been trying hasn't been working so well so far. Even in the wins we've got we've given up huge yardage. Un-Ravenlike

Wow, a OP with something positive to say. I agree our defense needs to get better. I think all of our players need to keep with the scheme. we've had players out of position which has hurt us.

:( That's part of what saddens me. The Ravens have generally been a pretty average team. Up one year down the next, with basically a .500 franchise record. I was hoping for improvement not "we were here last year."

We were here last year, with the same record. Agreed. But, I see differences, in not just the Defense, but in the schedule - compare last year's final 10 games vs. this year's final 10 games.

In '08, the Ravens finished 8-2:

1. Wins vs. Oakland, Cleveland, Houston, Cincy, Washington & Jacksonville - all mediocre teams last year - by a score of 192-72. An average score of 32-12!
2. Wins vs. better teams, Dallas & Philadelphia, by a score of 69-31 - averaging 35-16.
3. Losses to better teams, Pitt & NYG, by a score of 19-43 - averaging 10-22.

6 easier games, 4 harder games. This is based on the teams' performance last year, of course.

In '09, the Ravens face:

1. 4 very good teams: Pitt, Pitt, Indy, Denver
2. 3 good teams: Chicago, GB, Cincy
3. 3 easier teams: Cleveland, Detroit, Oakland

Of course, my "rating" of the teams we face/faced is just my opinion... but I think we have an uphill battle. The talent is there, the Offense is there, but the Defensive scheme needs adjusting, if the playoffs are in our future.

$10 says we almost lose to Oakland.

Do you have a PayPal account? :)

Ignore this past Sunday. Oakland sucks.

just proving your mistakes and apply some changes , make the difference now
Agreed. I think this week, will give the ravens a chance for the ravens to stop their rolling snow ball of mistakes, get some rest, get their heads straight, and game plan for the Broncos in 2 weeks.

I said it once and I'll say it again... "we are a spitting image of the 2008 Texans" and I hope I'm wrong but we will probably have a similar season if the D doesn't improve.

That's true.

However, last year at this point our offense didn't look this good. So you take some you lose some.

yep exactly, i was about to make a thread similar to this

by this point last year we were 2-3.. and we still ended up 11-5 with a less powerful team imo. We should be fine, only thing is that our schedule this year seems kind of harder than last year, not sure completely though so don't quote me on that

what I think the problem is last year our expectations weren't has high. When we go to the AFCCG then next years expectations are very high.We came into last year with a rook squad in QB,coach, and RB we got some momentum and this team clicked. Our defense right now most likely has no confidence and not sure if they will...i hope we do and go 11-5 or 12-4.

It amuses me that "being here last year" is supposedly a good thing. If we lose to Pittsburgh three times will we call it a great year?

That's true. Last year we were able to feast upon lesser teams in order to get the playoffs, but the Broncos are coming to town, we have a rematch with the Bengals, our kryptonite (Indy), GB and Chicago, and then, of course, there's Pittsburgh.

I can't agree with the idea that last year's team was "less powerful" (3rd in points allowed, 11th in scoring vs 21st in points allowed and 4th in scoring) so to me it's kind of like this: worse team, worse schedule.

But maybe I'm being too pessimistic. We have many good players on defense; if they can just "get it together" so to speak, we will be fine. And hey, it could be worse, we could have lost all of our close games, then we'd be 2-4.

Every year is different, and our schedule is twice as hard than last year. ??????????

If you ask me our schedule is twice as easy as last year... No more Monday nights in Pittsburgh, no more Colts at the dome (they come to Baltimore), no more farewell to Texas Stadium at Americas Dallas (although that was awesome), no more Giants in NY, no more week 2 bye week, and the NFC East was one of the toughest divisions in football. The majority of our tough games are at home and hell we have the Browns twice and they are twice as bad as last year. The Bungles are no better in my opinion than last year besides for Carson Palmer being healthy and no one respecting them including us (If you remember we had a close game against them last year also). When I saw our schedule come out I was thrilled that we finally caught a break.

To the guy that brought up Pittsburgh sweeping us 3 times. If they sweep us this year regardless if we make the playoffs I think its safe to hang our heads in shame. There is nothing more embarrassing for a Baltimore fan than losing 3 games to Worthlessburger. I hope we pull a 2006 Mcnair on their arses and embarrass them both games and I will be proud even if we miss the playoffs.
