Windows 7 Has Shipped

windows 7 hits store shelves thursday. like some beta testers I got my copy already installed will say video and games work 40 times better. my system recomendations for this copy 7 Ultilmate - 2.4 ghz or higher and 2GB ram and a DX10 or 11 Card(only 11 cards out are ATi 5000 series) will say this boy howdy this things better then vista , Counter Strike Source bench at 1680x1050 on vista 145.3 on 7 226.7 keep in mind i am running a tweaked rig ( 7750 Phenom X2BE , 2GB Matched GEiL BD 1066, and a 3850 256MB on a 785G motherboard from Asustek) I streamed a video from ign while dling at 700kbps without lag now . multi tasking seem much better, this os does create a Swap partion automaticly of about 1 GB this increases the speed , works kinda the same as in linux. it also means less fragmentation so if you disatisfied with windows vista give it a shot

I want itttt...I'm debating on whether I wanna do the Microsoft student discount and get the Home Premium edition for $29.99, or whether I wanna spring for the Ultimate Edition (also discounted, but through another source I forgot.)

I'll probably just get the Home Premium version but only if my current Microsoft Office 2007 license is transferrable.

I'd reccomend a custom one, newegg.com is pretty easy to use... you can get a much greater quality computer... for less or same price as a pre packaged computer from one of the computer companies

Im currently Running 8GB in my new Gaming PC I just built. Running Win7 and freaking LOVE it. Its Vista with all the resource hogging gone, its perfect for anyone. Im not buying into DX11 right yet. I'll wait until i see some new games that support it come out. I have Two ATI 4890's in Crossfire right now, and not changing anytime soon just to get all the dx11 features. Screen shots look amazing for DX11, but, they did for DX10 too <_<

btw, here is my Resident Evil 5 Benchmark with my current rig running Windows 7.
All settings to MAX at 1680x1050 with 8X AA. 4890's Overclocked to 985/1120, E8400 at 3.6Ghz

My current computer can't support Windows 7, so once I buy my next computer that's when I'll likely get it. If I can also keep my current computer going for a while, then I will likely be able to wait until Service Pack 1

I've always been a Linux guy myself, but I have to say that M$ finally got it right with W7.
I overclock all of my computers, and upgaded one that had Vista to W7. Running the same CPU frequency and volts, my temps are on average 6-8 degrees celsius cooler than what it ran in Vista.
Rock solid stable as well. And just a beautiful OS.

Still some software compatability issues, mainly with a few older programming IDE, and don't have drivers yet for my keyboard/laptop which is a year old. Other than that.....W7 is a winner.

I haven't been this overwhelmingly happy with an OS since XP. And even when I first got XP, I was only a kid then, so I didn't know why I appreciated it. lol.

I'm huge on multi-tasking (audio editing is a big thing for me with my radio gig) so for me to be able to edit music and write papers in Microsoft Office 2007 and be on Firefox and chat on AIM and have Photoshop open just for the heck of it if I feel like editing a photo at the same time, is huge for me. With Vista, I could do all that, but it'd be sluggish. But now, switching between programs is easy, and I feel as if my laptop is faster NOW with Windows 7 than it first was out-of-the-box, two years ago.

I'm sure your laptop is faster now than with Vista; one of W7's claim to fame is it's performance boost.
There are plenty of tweaks that you can perform as well to help speed it up even more, just google Windows performance tweaks and there are a ton of sites that have great tips, if you feel like tinkering around.

I'd consider giving Linux a go too. Some of the newer distros like Fedora (my personal favorite) and Mint come with some really cutting edge tech, like their ext4 file system, and overall are probably the fastest OS out there. Even Firefox is faster in Linux than Windows.
(prepare for sales pitch, lol)
And you can try Linux without installing it or making any changes to your system at all, by using what is called a "Live CD". Choose a distro (I highly recommend Linux Mint to anyone new to Linux), download the Live CD and burn it to a disk, then reboot.
Only drawback to a live CD is that it will be a bit slower than when its installed to your HDD, since an entire OS is running off a disc.
So...if you're sick of virii (no antivirus needed for Linux, another reason it is faster), like stability/speed/security, and free software that downloads and installs in seconds, check it out.
Just be warned, it is addicting and will turn you into a geek if you're not careful (what the hell is a date?? Haven't had one of those since getting involved in this).
