Fo: Roughing The Passer

32 posts in this topic

"There have been a number of questionable Roughing the Passer penalties in the early part of the season, particularly in New England's win over Baltimore in Week 4. Some of the complaints have people asking if the officials call penalties more often to specifically protect the bigger-name quarterbacks like Tom Brady and Peyton Manning. What do the numbers say?"

Since 2007, the quaterbacks who have drawn the most flags are:
8: Trent Edwards, Jeff Garcia, David Garrard
7: Tom Brady
6: Peyton Manning, Matt Ryan, Kurt Warner
5: Drew Brees, Jay Cutler, Chad Pennington, Matt Schaub

Tom Brady and Matt Ryan are especially noteworthy when one considers the fact that Brady missed nearly the entire 2008 season and Ryan did not play in the NFL during the 2007 season.

Fun facts: Donavan McNabb has not drawn a roughing the passer penalty since 2007
Tom Brady and Trent Edwards are the only quarterbacks who have drawn 3 penalties in 2009 thus far.
In 2005, Kyle Boller of the Baltimore Ravens tied for second in the league with 6 roughing the passer penalties.

Many fans have also complained that certain defenses are more likely to be penalized for roughing the passer than others. When the penalties against the defenses in the league are counted, there is one team that stands out: the Tennessee Titans.

The Titans have received a league high 14 roughing the passer penalities since 2007. The Baltimore Ravens are second with nine. Pittsburgh and Carolina tie for third with seven each.

Crazy refs gonna ruin this beautiful game. The commish needs to come out and finally state whether the NFL is a full-contact sport or not. This is ridiculous man.

Good stuff. Edwards makes sense because his OL sucks, and he's getting clobbered with and without the ball.

But Brady and Ryan are golden boys. It's very telling.

They sure are. And we get to play both of them next year... joy.

How 'bout those Titans though? Schaub, Manning, Gerrard... are the refs out to get the Titans or are the Titans just too rough?

This may come as a shocker, but mild mannered, introverted Joey Porter has something to say: "No question," Porter said. "When a guy can tell a ref when to throw a flag, and he gets it, he's got his own rules. They made the rule that you don't go at the legs for Tom, so when he feels that someone is going at his legs, he just points to the ref and he gets a flag. So I can honestly say that he gets his own rules."

I heard Rich Eisen just interviewed him and JP kept referring to the Pats as "the cheaters." lol.

I love it. I hope Peezy kicks the snot out of Brady.

I have never liked "Cheapshot" Porter because of the Heap thing, but I totally agree with every word he said about The Brady rules.

I cringed when he did that to Heap, but I think he felt like he had to make sure Heap wasn't going to contribute to a fake spike or something to that effect. Joey's got a big mouth and he can be a bit of a thug, but he's not dirty by any means.

I think he's been flagged once in his whole career for a late hit.

Tom Brady speaks:

"I think we were on the fortunate end of a few [calls] last week. Other times, we haven't been. In the end, they all probably even out."

Brady pointed out that he doesn't make the rules, but he's happy to ask for a call if it helps his team win a game.

"I want the penalty called. I want 15 yards. I don't care if they hit me or not. That's an advantage for our offense. You just want to make sure the refs . . . I go hug the refs before the game, and ask about his kids and stuff like that. I'm trying to get him on our side."

Hard to blame the guy for trying.

no not really.... must mean you and your team suck if you have to rely on penalties to win the game all the time... don't get me wrong its helpful every once in a while when they go your way..... but to really cry about it when a guy barely grazes you if that... thats not tackle football... and if she thinks that it is, she should quit now

Uh huh!!

When asked by the Boston Globe about Porter's suggestion that Brady can tell a ref when to throw a flag, Brady said he doesn't buy it.

"No, I don't think so, " Brady told the Globe. "You may get more calls. I don't know. I think the ref calls what he sees. I don't think I've ever influenced a call. The refs we have are very good. If they make a call on that, great. If they don't, that's fine."

Really Tom? You don't think that the Brady rule has anything to do with you?

Reddawn asked for this earlier and apparantly Tom Terrific was listening. In defense of the multiple roughing the passer calls:

"Rules are in place that protect the quarterback, protect the kicker, protect defenseless receivers, defensive linemen on cut blocks," Brady said. "I just don't see it as a quarterback issue. It's just that we're the ones holding the ball, so it's pretty visible when it happens. . . . They find ways to protect receivers, and they should. You can't just go and knock the crap out of the kicker. We all play by the rules. If you're flagged, you deal with it, and find a way to not let it happen again."
http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2009/11/06/brady-says-hes-never-influenced-a-ref/

Update: Since Tom Brady has drawn five rtp flags this year, he now has a total of 9 which puts him in the lead of all quarterbacks since 2007.

In the words of another future Hall of Fame quarterback, "Well, you gotta be remembered for something."
