What Is A Blackout?

19 posts in this topic

According to NFL rules, any home game that does not sell a minimum percentage of its tickets is blacked out for the local market; this is done so as to promote attendance at games. The idea is, if the town isn't interested in attending the game, then they wouldn't be interested in watching it at home anyway. There's a lot of financial things tied to it.

It's more complicated than that, but that's the most basic answer I know of.

Last I heard is that they've modified it so it isn't a complete blackout, but rather a delayed showing of the game, like they do in NFL Rewind. With the economy that way it is, it's smart thinking.

I heard it could be sidestepped though. I think Cleaveland or KC got around it just recently. By uh saying like that you sold all the allocated tickets, even if that isn't necessarily all the seats in the stadium, and you could see on the broadcast that the stadium was deserted.

Maybe I dreamt that though.

Dreamed? Dreampt?

Its bull crap is what it is.

I'd argue that MLB's blackout rules are bull crap, but that's best for a different thread.

Local companies will often buy the extra tickets in order to avoid the blackout.

The Raiders have had a blackout on almost every game this year . . . which I think is stinkin' hilarious.

My uncle is I think the only Raiders fan in West Virginia. The way he sees it is its all Jamarcus Russels fault. When I bring up Al Davis hes like what are you kidding the mans a genious. That is when I came to the conlusion that Al Davis brainwashed all the fans.
