He secured it to his body and made a "football move" (in other words, taking a step with the ball), thereby establishing his possession. His knee made contact with the ground as the defender was pulling him down, establishing that he was down by contact. The ball came loose just as his knee hit the ground, but the knee, again, was on the ground nevertheless, which rules the play dead. Not a fumble, even though it was close and could've been called either way because it was a split-second, in-the-moment play.
