One Game At A Time..

22 posts in this topic

I myself, treat every game like the coaches and players do, one game at a time but how come? I don't get paid to research and study up on their players? See whose on the injury list, whose practicing and so on? What is this?

Mainly this thread came to my head cause I wanted to know how you guys react to each week. Do you look at pass highlight clips, listen to press conferences, watch Playbook or any analysis show like YOU are actually part of the team.

As a true fan, it's something to look forward too. It's that connection in preparing to sit and watch our team instead of actually doing what the team is doing and thats playing.

We have very little threads about the Bengals and alot about LAST WEEK's lost mainly about the officiating. Some questions:

1. How do you prepare yourself every week for a game as a fan? Win or a lose?

2. What shows do you watch for a heads up?

3. Do you travel to other message boards to see what the opponent fans are saying?

Anything else you like the share.

Kind of tired seeing this Patriots threads, it's over. Let's get on with the season lol.

I visit other MB's but don't post I want to know what is coming from trolls, I watch NFLTA every night and Inside the NFL on Showtime I stop grumping after a loss on Tuesday. It took me 7 months to get over the Playoff loss to the Colts, so I instituted the Tuesday rule.

I'm on nearly every other teams MB to chat them up during the week before the game (I'm either RavensD or flynismo in case anyone else gets on other boards).

Not sure if this really fits the topic, but I'm currently working on a program that simulates each game. That requires me to research every player, and it's maybe kind of like something the coaches would do...other than that, I just do what every other fan does and keep up on the talk shows and visit the websites daily.

I watch NFL Network almost religiously whenever I have spare time to watch TV. I absorb everything like a sponge. I don't ever really have a ritual set for each week, but I just get through the week by staying focused on the goal of merely getting to Sunday. The idea is, if I work as hard as I can at everything I do, the days will go by faster to Sunday, and being able to unwind during each game is my reward for having survived the week.

I rarely, if ever, travel to other teams' message boards because I don't feel like reading some of the venom that's spewed by the more ignorant fans. I'd like to think I'm a fairly positive person, so I don't need all that hatred affecting my mood.

After a win, I'm pretty much on Cloud 9 all week and have an easier time dealing with the week ahead. After a loss, I just digest what happened, take stock of the positives and look objectively at the negatives, then move on. I'm usually over a loss within 24 hours, even less if it was a particularly well-played game all around. I got over the loss to New England much faster than a lot of people here, pretty much by that evening.

Even though my life revolves around football, there's still more to life than football, so I keep myself in check. I approach every game as level-headed as possible; makes the losses easier to bear, but the wins that much sweeter.

1. How do you prepare yourself every week for a game as a fan? Win or a lose? I look at their teams depth chart and check out the matchups between offense and defense

2. What shows do you watch for a heads up? Total access

3. Do you travel to other message boards to see what the opponent fans are saying? No, I tend not to care what other fans think, theres nothing I can do about it

I go to other teams' forums, just to read what other fans are saying - you should read the Browns' forum, and the civil war erupting over the Braylon trade today...

Don't watch much TV, I mainly read various websites, including NFL.com, ESPN, FoxSports, CBS Sportsline, etc... bunches of them. Half the coverage is a "media expert" giving his opinion, but it's interesting to hear what everyone is saying about the team, and compare points of view...

And, yes, I use "..." too often :P

I like to watch NFL Total Access every night at 7 p.m. I like to watch Playbook, Around the League and NFL Weekly Countdown. I watch all the Raven shows on MASN throughout the week also. Every day at 3:30 I watch Scott and Anita on MASN. In between all the T.V. programs I browse all the internet sports sites. Yeah I know what your thinking, Get a Life. LOL I am layed up on the couch with a major back injury so this is what I do. Not so bad. Its what I love.

Well I spend a lot of time on here. I lurk the other boards. I DVR "1 winning drive" "The John Harbaugh Show" "Ravens Xtra" and "Ravens Gameday". Watch AFC Playbook (just the Ravens part).

Other than that I just soak up all the Football information I come across.

Then I spend my Thursday, Friday and Saturday waiting anxiously for Sunday. But I realize why am I wishing for it to be Sunday? So I slow down and enjoy my weekend. But come Sunday I have no patient and I'm ready to go.

I watch the replays of prior games, especially those of whomever we're playing next. That and keep up with injuries, trades, and so on through SI.

For the most part though anything can happen on any given Sunday (Monday).
Yep, it's a computer program. It's just a "for fun" thing that I've been working on....football and computers are my favorite hobbies, so I figured out a way to combine the two into one big super-hobby, lol.
The guys who play Madden would appreciate this :P, because part of the simulation is going to factor in each individual player's "attributes" and such. Just a heck of a lot of work for one person to handle; I probably won't have this done for a year or so.
A labor of love....

I hear that. Depending on how many variables you factor in, it could take some serious development. Just out of curiosity, what language are you writing it in? Something this complex might take more than a lightweight scripting language.

Actually, when I first started on it, I began writing it in PHP/MySQL...originally it was just going to be a relatively simple web-based application.
Then I started getting more ideas on how to make it more realistic and hopefully more accurate, and it's now too complex to really use PHP to do this, so I scratched it and now it's being written in Python. I really wanted to do this in C++ for performance reasons, but that would have really made the amount of coding unbearable. Besides, I'm not confident enough yet in my C++ skills to take on something like this. Would be a great way to sharpen up, but it's already a massive enough project as it is. So far, just the database alone is over 4 MB, and it's far from finished!

I watch the NFL Network regularly, hate the talking heads on ESPN. Read the Bal timore Sun online everyday and usually check out the "Behind Enemy Lines" link to see what the competition is saying about us. Visit BR.com everyday and post if I have a strong opinion. Try to get past a loss no later than Tuesday, but I must say I had a really hard time getting over the Pats loss - for so many obvious reasons. Looking forward to Sundays divisional game against the Bengals. Glad the Ravens seem to be able to get past a loss and move forward, thanks to Harbs.

I've watched the New England game 5 times in its entirety. Maybe that's why I just failed my international politics exam. I'm one pathetic loser.

Gotcha. I've developed enterprise applications in Java, C++ and .NET, but have never really played around with Python, though I hear it's pretty powerful. Anyway, don't want to get WAY off topic, but you peaked my curiosity since Software Architecture is my day job.

Good luck with the program, sounds like it'll be pretty big.

Python is a very powerful language; but not on the level of C/C#/C++, though. Used to be (still is to an extent) the first language beginning programmers would learn before graduating to the C family. It's really starting to go the way of Pascal and Fortran nowadays, lol....other than the open source community, not too many people use it heavily anymore.
Well I don't want to hijack the thread either, just cant resist babbling about this kind of stuff.
