Merged: WR Braylon Edwards Traded to the Jets

Was it too much to give up? Perhaps. I dont believe it was, personally. If Braylon flops (which I think is unlikely), all the Jets lost was a third and a couple project players. If he returns to form with what appears to be a solid quarterback, I think this was a great trade for them.

I think, had this trade been made much earlier, I wouldn't be so critical of the Jets for pulling the trigger; that would've given Edwards ample time to build chemistry with Sanchez and learn the playbook, thereby increasing his chances of making an immediate impact. However, with a rookie QB, timing is everything, and I'm hard-pressed to believe that Edwards will be the guy he trusts to make the clutch reception deep so soon. In a few weeks' time, maybe, but not right now.

I'm a big believer in chemistry, and Rex Ryan needs as much of it as possible to keep this ship sailing in the right direction.

My other gripe, as I stated earlier, is the two draft picks. I'm a proponent of building through the draft, and there's plenty of reason to believe that Ryan could still gut the roster further if the rest of this season doesn't turn out as planned. Losing two draft picks is huge for a team that needs to learn to build through the draft if they want a solid foundation for the future. Despite their early success, I don't believe the Jets' core is set just yet.

no doubt, the draft is how you should build your team, no arguments there.
but even we've pulled the trigger on trades to bring in guys who can help us out. heck, we gave up two thirds and a fifth for McGahee, so I can also see why the Jests did this move.

I'm starting to pity the Brownies, lol...

Wonder what the Jets Cap situation is looking like. Favre must have got paid a pretty penny for last season, bringing in Scott, Leonard and whoever else.

This is true, but notice how we've all had on-and-off debates over whether or not to keep McGahee since last year; having given up that much and to still have those debates on occasion, indicates that the trade wasn't a 100% success. You generally don't take that risk and give up that much for a player who isn't as close to a sure bet as possible.

That's not to say that we were worse off for the McGahee trade -- we just would've been better served negotiating a lower price tag in that exchange, in retrospect.

I'm a firm believer that you never give up anything more than two draft picks for a player (or the equivalent of such) unless he's a sure bet.

I think the Jets won the trade this year by picking up a pretty good wide receiver and not losing much, but considering that Braylon's contract is up in a few months, is New York going for the gold this year?

I don't think Edwards is a rental, considering how much they gave up. I suspect the Jets will give Edwards a contract extension either before the year is out or soon thereafter.

Which means that they gave up two draft picks, two players, and have to take on a sizeable contract, which probably tilts the deal heavily in Cleveland's favor.

Have the Browns ever made a deal that tilted in their favor?

It seems to be the nearly-consensus opinion here, that the Jets were foolish to trade draft picks (in addition to somewhat "marginal" players) for a talented receiver with off-the-field and attitude issues...

I'm glad no one on this forum would advocate the Ravens' FO making a deal like this... (cough Brandon Marshall cough)

 :P

The Jets got the raw end of this deal, despite the unrealized potential of Braylon Edwards.
Nobody's potential ever goes realized in Cleveland...

I think the Jets actually come out looking good from this deal. Braylon's gotta be ecstatic going from an 0-4 team to a 3-1 team that's as good as anybody right now.

Oops, I forgot to be totally biased against the Jets for asinine reasons...I really don't fit in here.

Well actually if Marshall would have came as cheap as Braylon Edwards and all we had to give Denver was our 3rd and 5th I'm sure Ozzie would have gave it consideration. Denver was smart and they kept him and now looks like everything worked out. I remember during the draft the Giants were giving consideration in trading for Edwards and the Browns wanted a 1st round pick, what I want to know is why they didn't milk Rex and the Jets for their first round pick. I think that's where the Browns screwed up, is they didn't get a 1st round pick for Braylon.

I guess with Winslow gone, Edwards now gone.... the count down begins as the Brady Quinn trade watch is now ticking. Hopefully Quinn gets traded and finds himself a better situation with a better team.

Personally I can't get enough of Rex Ryan...he's refreshing from the standard say all the right things without saying anything coaches we've got a lot of in this league.

Trade terms: Braylon Edwards for Chansi Stuckey, Jason Trusnik and two picks thought to be a 3rd and 5th-round pick.
Wow. Way to much for Edwards. Stuckey has some potential as a okay WR in the league. Dont know much about the other guy. A 3rd pick has some good value also.

True. As a member of the media (OH NOOOO! NOT THAT! lol), I appreciate his candor and all the soundbytes he gives, especially if I were a professional accredited reporter. ;)

But with that said, I still don't like the Baltimore South label that they gave the Jets. Sure, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, but not when they're in the same conference!

In all seriousness, we can compare Braylon with Brandon Marshall, as far as off-field issues and attitude, but Marshall is a beast of a WR, and Braylon has shown hands of stone the last 2 years, after a great 2007.
With the off-field issues, a 1st was out of the question, even with his potential - because it's still unrealized potential, in his 5th NFL season.

Wouldn't be surprised at all, if Quinn gets traded. At the Browns' forum, they're saying they've heard that Carolina is a possible destination... What's funny is, the Browns outbid the Ravens for Quinn during the draft, both teams tried to trade for him, but Cleveland's 2 (higher) first round pick offer got them Quinn... and the Ravens had to "settle" for Joe Flacco, a year later... :D

The question is, will this trade work out like:

Randy Moss (Oakland to NE for a 4th round pick!)
(36 games, 196 receptions, 2832 yds, 35 TDs)

or

Roy Williams (Det to Dallas for 1st, 3rd, 6th picks)
(14 games, 30 receptions, 412 yds, 2 TDs)

If I had to guess, I'd say the latter...

I don't see why any of that should affect how we as fans view the Jets. Rex Ryan was our defensive coordinator, and now he's the Jets head coach. Obviously he's going to take what he knows and apply it there, because it worked while he was here. Personally I think it makes things interesting in the NFL, especially considering nobody in that division has challenged Tom Brady the way Rex Ryan's defense has. Ever.

"This is a business, and the business is winning," Browns offensive tackle Joe Thomas said. "And the man in charge is going to decide if you're helping us win.

Then the Browns should have gone bankrupt.

Why are they calling them Baltimore South? Last time I checked, Jersey is north of here and the Jets are in the AFC East.

I know...I know. I heard it used several times on NFL Network within the first couple days of the signing of free agency with the signing of Bart Scott, Jim Leonhard, etc.

It should really be Baltimore North, but then again, people don't really know their geography these days, do they? ;)
