Pittsburgh- Chargers

12 posts in this topic

I was surprised by the performance of the Steelers during the 1st half but they still have some kinks to work out. Didn't expect that kind of game from Mendenhall either. San Diego defense just looked pathetic. Fought back pretty well but I think after the 3rd quarter Pitt just played a lot more loose in coverage.

What's with teams playing the Steelers the same way every week? Playing way off their receivers, usually letting the receivers get in front of them, and wide open? Holmes and Ward are consistently getting open while the safeties and corners are just standing back. There's no one trying to break up the pass. I understand not wanting to give up a big play, but they're giving up the short plays that turn into first downs. You're never going to beat Pittsburgh if you're giving their receivers all sorts of space. It got to the point that I could almost predict where Holmes and Ward were going to break to.

This will be our biggest concern going in to week 12

Yeah, I agree. That is the biggest thing we'll need to address at week 12. The Titans and Chargers played the Steelers the same way on defense, giving up short passes, uncontested, letting them nickel and dime them all the way up the field. If we're smart, we won't fall into the same trap when we play them. It just boggles my mind why you'd play that far off and behind of receivers of a team like the Steelers. We can stop their rushing game, but we need to stop their passing game when we meet them.

Despite making a come back (of sorts), had the Chargers properly played the Steelers' passing game, they wouldn't have been such a differential to come back from in the first place.

I like the fact that the Steelers are struggling more in the fourth quarter. That used to be their ace in the hole, so to speak, and now it seems to be a weakness. I know it's very early in the season, but if they keep playing like that, it could be good for the Ravens.

Now what is up with the Chargers? Do they have a defensive line or is the Steelers O-line really that good?

Agree. The Ravens' D isn't SD, Pitt won't run successfully.

Pittsburgh offense is throwing short passes, because they've been so lousy protecting Ben. Quick slants don't require much time... which is the problem for the Ravens' D. Sure, if no one's open, Roethlisberger will scramble for forever, extending the play - and that's when he gets sacked.

But, Pitt has been using a lot of 4+ WR sets lately, with all running 5-10 yard slants and curls. You can't get pressure in only 2 seconds, and it's too many receivers for Ben to not find an open man. It's why he leads the NFL is completion %, currently 73%...

Mattison will have his hands full.

Well, I'd say it was a push. The Steelers offensive line did look good, opening up some good holes for Mendenhall. San Diego had some sacks and some good pressure on Ben. But Ben was doing the Ben thing, scrambling around evading some sacks, throwing out of others. Don't get me wrong, the Charger defensive line wasn't great, but it was passable. I was very surprised by how lackluster the Charger D was overall though =\

Jamal Williams, the Chargers' NT, is hurt. He's a beast, but without him, the Steelers O-line just pushed them up & down the field. In the SD-Ravens game, without Williams, Willis ran for 5+ yds/carry, but I still thought Cam should have run it more.
