It still bothers me that you would have to replace a console more than once, if even at all -- and it hasn't even been out for five years now! If Microsoft hadn't been so anxious to rush out their system to the market before Sony, they wouldn't have so many hardware issues.

And that's the exact reason I sold my 360 and bought a PS3! In the space of a year I sent my console back due to the RROD twice and even had a E70 Error which is hardware failure.

Best decision I ever made was getting rid of it because the PS3 is far superior in reliability and is a better console overall IMO.

When your Xbox 360 is on, cover it in about 2 blankets and cover it complete. Leave it on and covered for about 15 minutes. The console will turn off because it will overheat. This heats up the solder points on the cpu and gpu. Let the console sit for 20 min in a cool place. Now your 360 will work. It maywork for 3 days, 3 weeks, and a year. Its not guaranteed but it works. Also, the new xbox 360"s arcades have the new Jasper motherboard with 65nm gpu and cpu for less heat. They are bullet proof. If you continue to have problems, buy a new Xbox, or get a ps3 if it comes down to it.

Microsoft had to use cheap non-solder on the chips. Making heat warping of the board detrimental. Sucks they had to be ROHS compliant or we wouldn't have these problems.
I do xbox 360 modding. Here is some of my work.

The funny thing is, without being to rude... I was on the toliet reading a game informer mag, and the article was on failure rate of 360. Well it showed that 40 percent fail twice, i thought to myself not mine they fixed my **** right. I turn mine on later and get 3 rings, i laughed in disbelief

I just got my PS3 back with it's "Disc Read Error of Death". Now I'm the proud owner of 2 PS3s.

PS3 Slim in my basement.
PS3 Big in my bedroom.

You did get lucky, I can't let go of mine because I've already invested in a ridiculous back catalogue of games I barely have the time to play.

3 rings of death? Ridiculous. As a ps3 owner i was shocked when i heard about it, and i was shocked like what the heck? With all the nickel and dime-ing microsoft does with the 360, youd think that they would put more effort into building their console. Its almost like 3ROD's is free built-in software, might not activate today but SURPRISE it's on tomorrow.

Get a PS3 if they won't repair yours for free.

I got that. The best way to prevent it is to never, never, never turn it off from the back if your game freezes. Hold the reset on the system.

I'm on my second PS3, and it's still a 60 gig, the very first edition, but it's refurbished. I'm waiting for it to get the YLOD, then I'm screwed.

I'm still amazed my 360 hasn't broken down. I play it excessively and occasionally leave it on for long periods of time when I'm not playing it; it's not in a well-ventilated spot either.

Meanwhile my friend who bought his the same time I did (around the launch) has had his break 3 times. =P

I have two xbox360 consoles a 20gig and an 80gig
My first xbox360 (20gig) failed "3" times...It is now played daily and hasn't failed in about two years.

The second xbox360 (80gig) is about a year old and I've had no problems with it...(which means that now
that I've mentioned this fact I'll be getting the RROD any day now...)

I can't think of any other product I buy that I would tolerate the failure rates these things have.
Suffice it to say that any more failures will mark my exit from the gaming world
