Merged: Patriots Release Prescott Burgess

I wonder what the conditions were on the 7th pick we received in the trade? Perhaps the Pats keep it now since they released him so soon!

I heard that the Pats will keep the pick. The conditional part of the trade depended on whether they kept Burgess or not I'm guessing.
Yeah I guessed as much, doesn't really make a difference since we were planning on cutting him the day we made the trade anyway.

Bellichck brought him in to pick his brain about our defense.....when he wouldn't sucumb to the darkside they cut him.....thats my thoughts.
Or he gave him all the information they needed to scout our defense and help out Brady and Moss and Bill and Robert(Kraft) decided he did enough to help him so they cut him. It suck though that they may get the 7th round pick back, I think once you trade for a player he must be on the roster for a set amount of weeks like 2 or 3 at the most. Or at least they should let us keep their 7th round pick.

Just read this on one of their message boards:
http://www.patsfans.com/new-england-patriots/messageboard/10/277357-weei-pats-release-lb-prescott-burgess-sign-dl-terdell-sands.html

The trade was for a conditional pick...so maybe we don't get that 7th rounder unless he is on their team for a set amount of time?

Maybe they just wanted some extra info on us? They have it and see you later?

Interesting....

If we traded him I doubt they would make it possible for them to have him to learn inside info and then cut him without us receiving anything in return. So, I'm betting we pick him back up and get that 7th rounder for free B)

I would highly doubt we pick him back up......

yeah its pretty common for a team to acquire a player from another team for a little extra knowledge of the playbook. It's like a legal form of spying, hopefully we gave Burgess phony information and it was us who set up the Patsies :D

I doubt it. Why would he protect us after we ditched him. Perhaps we gave him a side check to keep his mouth shut.

But Seriously how much would Burgess know? It's not like he's practicing with the first team.

We do not get the 7th round pick now. We "traded" Burgess to the Pats, but we really just sent him there so the Browns couldn't claim him on waivers. There had to be some sort of exchange involved to call it a "trade" hence the conditional 7th round pick. Burgess will probably be claimed by the Browns now.

Oh and for all the people thinking Burgess could provide top secret info to the pats, remember we have Kelley Washington who played for them the past two years.

Drew, Peerman, Ivy, and now Burgess... This is a tough year for some former Ravens. Maybe Rex will find some room for him.

yes, but i believe we have drew back

Anyone know the exact conditions of the 7th Round pick? Was it conditional, in that it could have gotten upgraded if Burgess was Active X amount of games or was it conditional in that we get nothing if he's not active X amount of games?

Does that make any sense? lol

Interesting move by the Patriots.. smart to be honest. They barely won that monday night game back in '07, and we had like 14 players on IR for that game. So they're probably afraid of facing a fully healthy Ravens squad this time ;)

What I have noticed is that Harbs is a pretty sly character himself, thought MUCH nicer than Belupchuck. Teh craziest thing crossed my mind as I was reading posts about Kruger. Could we be holding something back for a game like NE? Have we been a bit more conservative on D only to unleash the monster when we face our first challenge of hte season. (OK, SD was a challenge). Our coaching staff is showing it has no problem pulling out all kinds of surprises. I'd love to see Harbs and staff pull one over Belupchuck.

From what I have gathered, Kruger has been inactive because he isn't contributing on special teams... something Harbaugh stresses.

Do you guys not think the Ravens had foresight into this matter?

I doubt Ozzie/DeCosta would deal a player for a seventh round picking knowing that he could give over our entire playbook.

A possibility is that the Pats grilled Burgess, and he said what he knew in a vain attempt to make the team, but the information was nothing that New England already didn't know.

That or maybe Harbaugh and co. figured that if they cut Burgess, the Patriots would just pick him up anyway, so Baltimore may as well attempt to get something out of the situation.

To be honest, though, I have no clue about the inner-workings of the NFL, but I have heard about this practice being pretty common after training camps finish and cuts arrive, so I'm pretty sure the Ravens would have been fully aware of the consquences of trading a player to a team they were up against NEXT WEEK.

This is true. Not only that, but better that he went to the Patriots than a divisional rival in the Browns last week as the two were about to face off (not that he would've made too much of a difference...), and it's not as if Belichick hasn't already done his homework for this game. Prescott Burgess' knowledge is irrelevant because all that Belichick needs to know about this team, is all on film. You can't hide what the film shows when it comes to weaknesses and tendencies.

Not only that, but Belichick is too smart to not already know about things he could use to his advantage on Sunday.

It was conditional. But I couldn't find any information as to what the conditions were.

You would have to believe that the Ravens knew what they were doing. Perhaps they wanted Burgess to tell them what he knows of the playbook. But come gameday, they throw something completely different at them. At least this is what I'm hoping.

Right, it's still a smart move as any new information would be a plus, but I doubt his efforts yielded any results.
