Merged Discussions Of Raven's D

They have only played 3 games!!!!!!!! Rivers and the Chargers played a GREAT offensive game that day, but it was only ONE game! BTW the other two games the Ravens gave up less than 200 total yards.

P.S - after week 3 Denver is currently ranking as the #1 D in the NFL.

Like people have before, everyone has touched on this subject. I personally think the Ravens will be a top 5 defense by season's end but if they're not, who cares when the offenses seems to be a lock for 30+ every week. I don't see the offense scoring that many points every week this season but they're so balanced, I don't think any team on the schedule can shut them down completely either.

As for the defense, the secondary had a terrible match up against San Diego and were exposed. To me, both Foxworth and Washington are #2 corners at best but the team is just going to have to live them being in the positions they are. There may easily be similar performances from opposing QBs this season but I do believe the secondary will get better.

No one wants to touch the subject of the Ravens D dropping from a top #3 over the last few years to the ranking in the 20's of late. Yes, I know much of this current ranking has to do with lack of a consistent pass rush in combination with poor performances by our secondary, but with the exception of Foxworthy, the defensive personnel remains the same as in the glory days of 24/7 max blitz Organized Chaos. My question is why hasn't the media and Ravens fandom been more vocal about getting Mattison to return to this exciting shutdown philosophy of defensive football?

There are so many things wrong with this that I'm not sure where to start.

As the weeks go on, I am betting our ranking gets better. The Chargers killed us with the pass. But, I honestly feel they would have done the same thing vs. last years secondary too.

Maybe that's because our defense is 7th overall, not in the 20's?

I don't know what blog you're looking at but there have been a hundred threads about or D and Mattison and missing Rex. As for the media, I don't read any local papers, and barely listen to talk radio, but Anita Marks has talked a good bit about how she misses Rex and that the D is slipping.

This is not a "missing Rex" comment. This is a missing the exotic 24/7 max blitz Organized Chaos defensive philosophy statement. Though Rex created the defense, he holds no patent on it. The Ravens possess the best talent to run this dominating defense, the players possess the knowledge and experience to run this style of dominating defense. Why hasn't Mattison implemented it? One cannot argue that Cam's new look high powered offense in combination with Rex's old Organized Chaos defensive schemes would easily make the Ravens the most dominate team in the NFL.

NOTE: Before the game with Cleveland, Ravens defense was ranked 28th in the league. When, if ever, in the days of Organized Chaos were the Ravens ranked out of the top 5 at any point of the season?

Matt Forte and Steve Slaton aren't even top 30 running backs right now, Tom Brady is middle of the pack at QB... who cares after 3 weeks? As long as we're winning and the defense is getting better. Besides, we had one 'bad' game and still won! Aren't we 7th now?

Ay carumba! What exactly are you people expecting? Look at the topic description - "Sure, our offense is alright". Alright????? For crying out loud, only New Orleans is outscoring us! We have the number 2 scoring offense in the ENTIRE NFL! So I guess now that the offense is "alright", we need to complain about the defense? Some of you people act like we've performed like the Browns. Just give it a rest, please!

Let's be football-honest here. The Chargers racked up nearly 440 yards in the air against us with a patchwork offensive line. For any Ravens defense, that's an atrocious stat. The Ravens front four simply could not generate a consistent pass rush and pressure to help shorten the field for our smallish CB's against San Diego's big receivers. Last season's exotic Organized Chaos schemes were so successful at pressuring QB's and whole offenses, that Frank Walker and Corey Ivy.... repeat Frank Walker and Corey Ivy were our starting CB's deep into the playoffs and the AFC Championship game without losing effectiveness in the secondary. Yes, Phillip Rivers absolutely killed Mattison's NFC styled 4/3 mayonnaise defense, but there's no way a pressured and confused Phillip Rivers could have survived in similar fashion against the type of pressure Organized Chaos brought to bear.
