No He Didn't...the Option?

29 posts in this topic

Just when I thought I had seen it all with the Ravens offense Cam throws in another wrinkle. The option to Rice(i think it was him) was ridiculous. Now I cant say Id be surprised to see Gaither throwing a pass to Oher off of a double reverse

The pitch actually went to Clayton but it was a great play. I personally think they should have given the ball to Rice or Washington.

oh yeah, I remember now. Well,it makes more sense to give it to a wideout rather than the slot guy or a trailing RB if you're really trying to trick the defense.

Clayton used to be a QB correct? He could be really deadly in an occasional wildcat.
I agree. I remember his sweet TD pass to Mason last year.

We were going nuts in the stands when they pulled the option, Joe can really handle the football!

Clayton is the offensive play maker on the team. Physically he is average but he has great vision and balance. I think clayton along with troy smith are the best for gadget plays.

I really think its stupid that so many people say "the option can't be ran in the NFL". Ofcourse it can if you are careful and have the right personnel in.

I get excited when our offense is on the field and nervous when defense is. What's up with that?!

Loooove watching Flacco this year...simply fun!

Same here, I think its because I want the defense to be as good as usual, but I have never had expectations for the offense so its all just a bonus.

Maybe in High School but not in college.

Yeah, Clayton was QB in high school, but at that level, you usually put your best athelete at QB. If I'm not mistaken, Ed Reed played QB some in high school, Antwaan Randle El, Matt Jones, soon to be Tim Tebow, Wes Welker. It's not at all uncommon.

Yeah, kind of like how the best player on little league and some high school teams are always the pitcher.

To me, it looked more like an impulse, to throw it back to clayton.

But that might be the genius of CamCam's play calling, probably what the defender was thinking.

No way, that was a designed double option. No reason for Clayton to swing around if it wasnt. I dont think it was a true triple option, b/c flacco never seriously looked like he wanted to throw it. It looked as If he was gonna keep it at first, then clayton came from nowhere and he flipped it to him.

I just dont understand why they decide to show off their trickery when it doesnt really matter, its the Browns. Just like last year against the Raiders. I guess theres a reasonable explanation.

announcer said it during the KC/PHILLY game you do it against less dangerous teams it's like experimenting and it puts a nugget in the other teams heads making them wonder if we going to try it.

Best quote out of the Browns' game, from Trevor Pryce on the Ravens offense:
"They ran plays that I've never seen, and I practice with them every day. So, I'll be damned if Cleveland knew what was going on. There was a point [that] I felt sorry for Cleveland. [There was] a point in the game where I was just like, 'There's no way, there's nothing you can do about that.' You can't throw the ball 20 yards downfield, then run a fullback five and then throw it back 20 yards downfield. That's hard to defend."
Yeah, I like what he said after that, too. All the different ways our offense attacks makes other teams' defenses sub like crazy. He says all that running on and off the field can wear you out more than the game itself and just kills morale.

Thats what I was thinking. Its a god way to practice in a game situation. I think we were already up pretty good when they did the option play so even if something had gone wrong it wouldnt have hurt too bad.

Not to nitpick, but the traditional triple option doesn't involve a pass. The third option is handing off to the back up the middle. Traditionally, the triple option comes out of the I formation where the QB hands or fakes to the fullback, and if he fakes, rolls out with the halfback where he has the option to run himself, or pitch to the halfback. Cam just changed it up and had the fake up the middle to the halfback, with Clayton in motion to become the pitch option as Flacco rolled out.

oic. I always thought the triple option was throw, pass, or run. It usually looks like, when they run it, that the QB runs mostly parallel to the LOS, scans for a receiver coming across in front of a defender to throw to and at the same time scanning for a hole to run through, and the back running adjacent to him is the safety valve if there's nowhere to run or throw.
