Baltimore's Cb Vs. New England's Receivers

26 posts in this topic

As long as our secondary play as good as they did yesterday, and Special teams play solid I see a big win for us next week. Our defense has always been known for stopping the run and somethings on this Baltimore defense is a given. I can not see the Patriots just running the ball down our throats as bad as they would love to. With our offense playing as well as they did scoring is a given. (Last week 300+ yards). The only thing the Patriots can do is throw the ball. If our secondary comes prepared for this Patriots offense like they did for the Browns then the Pats are in trouble.

I think that Wes Welker and Foxworth/F.Washington is a good matchup. less height, and both have speed and quickness to the ball. The ravens will match up good there, but vs Randy Moss, if we can have Foxworth/Washington (either/or) with Landry to aid in coverage, then i think we should be able to cover their receivers pretty well.

Randy Moss is coverable; the Ravens did it in 2007 and largely kept him quiet for most of the game (save for a TD and another catch or two.) Different system and different corners, sure, but you had Chris McAlister with a nagging knee injury and shoulder injury who was still able to cover him well.

(No, this doesn't mean we should bring C-Mac back just for this game...knee injuries are hard to recover from as you age, people.) -_-

This the key match-up for the Ravens next week. Foxworth and Washington will probably switch off covering Moss and Galloway. However, the key is how Frank Walker does against Wes Welker. I personally think you should jam Welker at the line to throw off his timing with Brady but he's so quick and strong for his size, he's able to wriggle out of press coverage and get open.

Well i would agree with you, but if you remember we had those swirling, 30+mph winds that greatly under- or over-threw the quarterbacks' passes. Randy Moss had us beat on a couple of plays that game, but i dont think he's still in the same shape this season. It will be interesting to see how we fare in pass defense this time around.

CRAP, I forgot about the wind that night! Ah, now I'm not so cautiously optimistic...

...ah, who am I kidding, that'll do nothing to change my optimism as the week goes on. :D

Moss scares me because of his height but his routes suck. Otherwise I think we match up well.
He doesn't need precision route running. He grabs jump balls - that's his thing. Most corner backs are small (ours included), and when a ball is chucked high up, Moss uses his height as an easy advantage. There's little a smaller CB can do besides try and knock the ball out.

Over the top coverage is really needed. There is no way in hell we can win a 1-on-1 battle. Most teams can't. So when you double team then Wes Welker torches you.

I don't know if Foxworth or Washington are good at it but the key to covering Moss is simply playing bump-&-run. Safety help over the top is good too.

Yep. I think Dawan Landry is the man for the job imo. Hes big and physical enough to go and tackle moss up top, where reed can try and jump the short slants/curl patterns or whatnot by Wes welker & others. I think that if we can perfectly execute on defense according to gameplan, we should be able to hold up good enough to win.

Exactly, and that's what I don't like. Phillip Rivers exploited our height disadvantage profusely and bellechek took notice believe me. Welker can be covered but if Brady continues to be as inaccurate as he has been it may be a mute point.

You got to be kiding me guys.. If there is advantage New England has over the Ravens is at WR. The Patriots wont have success in running the football at all so its easy to see Brady passing over 50 times next Sunday. Welker will play this game and he is a match up nightmare for the Ravens. Moss can be contained with double coverage but he get at least one TD. The best beat for the Ravens is long drives that eat up the clock and score TDs. Brady and company will put up points, so Flacco and company will need to score 28 points or more to win.

This is going to be a great game and can't wait to see it.

On Baltimoresun.com there was an article saying part of the reason why the Raven's secondary was struggling was partly because of the new system and how they were still trying to get used to it. Which makes sense. So I'm hoping if they develop chemistry and get more comfortable then they can improve. I'm nervous to see how we do against the colts and patriots offenses. I'm not excited about the colts game. They look so good.

The key is ball control. We need to run the ball well against the patriots and hope our defense can step up a couple times. I still don't know if we can win a shootout with them.

Hi guys as a die hard pats fan liveng in the Boston area. we naturaly get more pats coverage and follow our team closer than anyone else .The reason I wanted to chime in on this topic was a few posters have mentioned Wes Welker. he has been sidelined for the last two games. The Patriots who are notriously tight lipped about injuries are keeping with that. I am not sure if he will play the Ravens next week. just thought I would add that. good luck next week .

Interesting. If Welker doesn't play, that would be a big blow to the Pat's offense. Still, Kevin Faulk is great on third downs.

I keep thinking that he will play no matter what. It has surprised me to see him out the past two games. They do have that kid Elderman who plays exactly the same as Welker though.

Really looking forward to the game.

I think our secondary will get the job done against the Pat and is starting to gel. I know how easy that is to say after a game like we just had against the Brown, but I think after 3 games under their belt and an inaccurate Brady, the Ravens will take care of business.

I can picture a game similar to the Chargers except 150 yards less passing from Brady.

The Patriots receivers are closer to the Chargers receivers than the Browns receivers, we just have to pray Brady is still a bit rusty.

I'm just not sold on Foxy yet, well I'm not sold on any of our corners.

The key to this game is getting Tom Brady's shirt dirty and getting him rattled. He's looked rattled at some point in all of his 3 games, especially the Jets game. If the D plays like the Jets D did, we have the offense to put up 28+ points, so I'm cautiously optimistic.

Speaking of small corners. Did anyone see that tall CB that the Dolphins have. Sean Smith. He's 6'4", he played with Kruger at Utah. They say he's the new breed of corners.

He's closer to 6'3 but huge nonetheless. I wanted the Ravens to get him.

This game is going to be a prime example of why our offense is something the rest of the league should fear.

We should be able to score on the Patriots defense with the same success that we've had the last 3 weeks. Now, take into account what the Dolphins did to the Colts. Keeping Peyton on the sideline for almost 3 entire quarters. Now Peyton is Peyton... but I highly doubt that if we run the ball all over New England, that Brady and the New England offense will be able to just pick up a rhythm when they finally get on the field like the Colts did.

And if New England stacks the box for the run, I don't care. We can pass on them too. Really, this game does not scare me even with the corner situation. It should be another fun one to watch! Just play that sound football we've been playing. Be smarter on special teams. I can't believe we kicked to Cribbs when there was absolutely no need to. Limit the penalties. And stay healthy!

Yep Smith is part of the new breed and I think he's currently outplaying the Dolphins 1st round pick Vontae Davis. With WRs getting bigger, taller and faster small corners are soon going to become obselete. In 10-15 years from now players under 6ft will be relegated to HB or special teams.

I agree. I don' t believe our secondary will get t laxed knowing the type of team the Patriots are. They are known for their passing and they will definitely expect to see numerous passes from Brady. Another thing is getting pressure on him so that he can't throw the deep ball. Our Linebackers are quick and if they can force the short pass Moss will be quiet. I noticed we rush Johnson, a lot but they give you a lot of looks between Suggs and Gooden when it comes to rushing the passer. I wouldn' t be surprised if the Defense show up big along with our Offense like last game.

Our db's are still carrying a chip on their shoulders from San Diego. Hopefully, they play with that same esprit de corps in Foxborough.

Not just Moss and Welker, but Galloway, Watson, Faulk, Taylor, that little Welker clone, so many targets for Brady, and he's always good at spreading it around. I have no clue how we keep everyone covered AND get pressure, Mattison's got his work cut out.
