No Demetrius Williams Yet?

24 posts in this topic

Don't get me wrong. Im ecstatic to see Joe Flacco go downfield with the corps he's consistently working with right now in Mason, Clayton, and Kelley Washington. Im also happy to see that Kelley is really becoming a huge role for us in 3rd downs up the middle, a huger role i would ever have thought he would play for us. But i still wonder why Demetrius hasnt been even on the field yet. He has increased his strength, adding a hefty 10-15 pounds of bulk, and in my opinion, the last game he had a reception in, the last preseason game, he was very impressive catching the ball. So why dont we use him more? He's another downfield option for us, can definitely catch, has good ball skill and Football IQ and now is more durable. Are we waiting for something, for his achilles to completely heal, to play him later in the more important games, what? idk...what do you guys think?

The one thing I disagree with in your assessment is his good football IQ. Was there some stuff you read about him or saw that showed that? IMHO the reason Washington is getting so much more playing time is exactly that. He has the ability (especially on 3rd down) to find soft spots in zones and get to the marker to convert for 1st downs.

I said the same thing to the guy next to me at the game yesterday. I was getting frustrated cause til the Mason pass Joe wasn't really trying too much deep stuff. I gotta think Cam's gonna break him out soon, maybe vs NE?

I don't know whether he's still injured or not but maybe Kelley Washington is simply outplaying him in practice. He's definitely seen more snaps than Williams and practice performance is the only reason I can come up with.

I agree Williams would be another good option to use but the offense is clicking right now so they don't have to force him in. If he wants to see more playing time, he needs to step up.

Mason and Kelley Washington has consistently stepped up for the pass. Williams has speed, hands, and height. Im not sure why in three games he doesnt have a catch. I havent seen Williams packaged in any plays.

well maybe im wrong about the way I used the term "football IQ." when i said that i was trying to refer to how hes aware enough to be in the right position to make the catch, almost wherever it is thrown to him. If you look in the link:
(My link)

And look to the videos on the right-hand side, i understand the videos are old but are the only videos of when Demetrius was active. Anyways, as you could see in the video vs the rams, he was clearly double covered, the ball underthrown yet he was able to get himself in the right position to catch the ball...imo impressive.

The other video vs the cardinals, McNair threw it just right , where Williams was able to pull in the catch in decent coverage and stay in-bounds, and make an acrobatic reception.

yeah, i may have been wrong with the way i used the term "football iq" but im pretty sure that Williams replicate those skills when healthy, which he is. Plus, with his added bulk, it should be beneficial to go up the middle.

against NE? i hope Cam Cam can do that vs new england, as they are probably better than the browns on defense. I honestly think we will run the ball more vs new england, although i hope flacco takes a few more deep shots.

Williams is number 4 on the depth chart so he's only in on 4 WR plays. Washington deserves to play more than him due to his performance. Williams will have to show what he can do when he gets in there or wait until another guy i down on injury.

Consistent is the key word there. Williams doesn't step up consistently. Washington could have proved to be as big of a pickup as Birk was.

Williams has shown as much consistency as Clayton. I would put him as #2 and package Clayton in the slot.
No he hasn't. If that was the case, why hasn't Williams seen the field? Clayton is inconsistent in games but at least he's held onto his job and is seeing consistent playing time.

Yeah, Williams finally dressed, but didn't see much action... he needs to step up in practice and prove he can be that 4th WR. Kelley Washington is playing too well to take away his time on the field.

I guess they can use 5 WRs can they? Sit heap out give a play where 5 WRs go all over the field cant double team them all can they? You cant Double team 3 of em nether and Flacco will look for the open man and then BAM!! First down!

I think he's being held back purposefully for the second half the season. Who knows this could be part of Cam's offensive plan.

I don't agree with doing the 5 Receiver sets. It's unnecessary for a team like ours with 3 good running backs, all of which can catch the ball. What they need to do is split backs with Mcgahee and Rice every once and a while.

I think they should also bring out a 3 receiver set occasionally with Mason, Williams and Clayton in the Slot. Deep threat in Williams, Mason curl and slant routes, and Clayton used in a Wes Welker way.

I am sure that it is already in the works and I think we may see something like that against New England in 2nd,3rd and long situations.

Aside from the fact that our other 3 receivers have been doing a great job, I think Williams is going to be seeing some action down the road a little bit. Our offense hasn't been in a situation yet where we really need to throw the ball down the field swiftly because we haven't really trailed except for some time vs. San Diego. Just wait until we start getting into the meat of our schedule, we MAYBE could get behind in a game. Im sure Cam has intentions of using him, its a long season.

Well Williams doesn't have the experience we should just be glad he isn't on the IR.
Hes not on IR? last last few weeks I automatically assumed he was.

Why get frustrated? It's working to perfection. Can't be throwing bombs just for the sake of throwing them.

We have already, a few times. Used Troy Smith as the fifth receiver.

I agree. Actually I'd really like to see Washington take over the #2 spot, but a healthy D-Will would be okay too. Anything to upgrade the production we get from our #2 wr.

Even with as much of a supporter I've been of Clayton, I'd love to see Washington as the #2 guy.
