Question About The Ravens Use Of The 4-3

10 posts in this topic

Is it me or does it seem like Suggs has a harder time getting pressure from the DE position then from the OLB position in the 3-4? Plus he seems to be held alot more this season then usual. I really dont like this 4-3 defense as much but hey we are winning so thats what matters.

My main gripe with the 4-3 is that we dont have the linebacker personnel for it. JJ is too slow for olb in a 4-3, and Ray cant roam sideline to sideline like he used to, now he clearly still brings it and is legit. But with JJ being as slow as he is and Ray being 34 makes it hard for Ray to cover ground for JJs speed. Suggs is playing lights out at DE, he may not put up the same sack numbers as a Freeney, but that guy is just plain aweful against the run talk about being one dimensional, how that guy makes the pro bowl routinely is beyond me. We have the inside guys to play a 4-3 on the line, but we dont have another edge rusher outside of Suggs, Pryce just doesnt have what he used to, he can still collapse the pocket but has a hard time actually getting to the QB. What I dont still dont understand and have griped about this for some time, is that Kruger is a 4-3 edge rushing DE and they said in TC he had a hard time transitioning to a 3-4 OLB, well we're in a 4-3 now so dress him! screw the STs stuff.

This is a silly discussion, because we run a 3-4 hybrid. Suggs lines up in pretty much the same position every play, this much discussed defensive scheme issue is based on whether he puts his hand down in the three point stance, or stands up in the two point stance. In either stance, he can rush, play run, or rush upfield at the QB. We run the same variety of blitzes and coverages with both. It's immaterial, really.

well we actually dont play a 4-3 defense
We play a lot of 3 man fronts with 3-4 coverages except Suggs will just put his hand on the ground.

And as for the person who said Pryce doesnt have it anymore, thats garbage as He created so many pressures today and played very well IMO

The only thing i dont like about the ravens defense is that Ayanbadejo is playing a lot of snaps ahead of Tavares and Jameel isnt getting very many snaps.

Keep in mind we played the Browns who have the worst pass protection in the league through 3 weeks. I didnt say he didnt play well, he plays like a DT tho not a 4-3 rush end ,he collapses the pocket but doesnt provide much outside rush like a normal 4-3 DE. With teams double blocking Suggs on obvious pass downs, the rest of our line should have way more QB hits at the very least. He still plays well just not in a standard 4-3 DE way. And the last 2 games we have predominately been 4-3, when Suggs puts his hand in the dirt and rushes 90% of the time, im sorry but its a 4-3 for the 6 plays he gets back up and spies a HB or goes to the flat then you can call it a switch scheme. Majority of plays its a 4-3. Ayanbadejo is playing because he provides what Mcclain provides in hustle and a nonstop motor the major exception is that he doesnt get lost in pass coverage like Mcclain does far too often. I dont know why Gooden isnt playing more, personally if hes supposed to be the next guy in a long line of good LBs he should be playing the majority of downs.
