Mark Clayton's Performance In Week 3

19 posts in this topic

Well, today he didn't contribute much again.

BUT......

It looks like his technique is improving. I saw him make a terrific catch along the sideline. Although it was only for a short gain, and he wasn't able to get anything after the catch, it was a catch that up until today he never would have made. He found a hole at the last second, and showed great footwork to stay in while concentrating on making the catch. He looked just like Mason, if only for one play.

I've always felt that the two things holding him back from becoming a legit WR is his awareness and route running. On that catch, he showed both.

Let's hope that we see many more of these plays from him!

Clayton and the rest of the WR are doing a great job... did you see him almost reel in a one-handed catch?

By the way, can someone explain to me why illegal contact is a rule if it's never called, even if it's blatant?

I know close means nothing in football, but he almost made a sick one handed grab along the sideline when he was draped all over by the CB.

Yeah, I saw that near-catch too. It was eeirly similair to the one he made last year against the Bungholes on Leon Hall.

The one last year was insane. Ball never even touched his wrist, forearm or anything other than just his hand

To me, Clayton actually played well today. He drew a bad penalty but he made every catch thrown his way that was on target and he even gained 15 yards on two carries.

Props to Cam with the option play call. It just goes to show how bad the Browns are that the option actually worked in the NFL =P.

I was at the game and I don't know if they showed this specific play in depth on TV or not. But there was this one play where Clayton beat his man. Flacco threw it. Clayton slowed down (almost stopped) and missed the catch. If he kept running it would have been a touchdown for sure.

It wasn't a miscommunication. Clayton looked back saw the ball then slowed down. He read the pass as short. I was a bit disspointed in him for this specific play.

I thought Mark Clayton played decent today. That one play he got his jersey pulled and should have been pass interference, giving us the ball on the 1-yard line. He is a shifty runner and normally makes tough catches. I think as the season goes on he will continue to play well.

Yep, we got to see that in all it's glory.

I didn't want to bring that up, because I wasn't 100% sure it was Clayton's fault or not. There was a lot of touchy-feely stuff going on there, but couldn't really tell what happened.

One think to consider when talking about Clayton or any other Ravens WR is that these guys are still growing together.

Clayton missed a lot of camp, so the timing might not be all there. That will improve as the season goes on.

Washington is in his first year with the team so Flacco will get more comfortable with him as the season goes on.

Heap is starting to emerge, and be that reliable guy for Flacco over the middle. His production will only increase as the offense gets better.

LJ Smith just got involved for the first time yesterday. Using him as that 2nd TE could be a huge mismatch.

Mason is Mason.

Plus we also haven't really seen Rice expose the mismatch of a LB yet.

So this offense has so much more room to grow. So far so good

That's the scary part.

Oher is a rookie. Gaither is still refining his play. Grubbs is really putting it together, but still hasn't reached his ceiling yet either. Flacco and Rice are just getting their feet wet. How good is this offense going to be come December? Next season?

Wow.

Our receivers are doing a great job. Mason is doing his thing like always, Washington has been very effective as a 3rd receiver. I'm happy with where we are right now. Who is unhappy with the receiving corps now?

Well, I'm still not happy with Clayton, but there is a new-found glimmer of hope, and I wanted to put that out there and acknowledge the good things that Mark does, rather than just rag on him.

Other than that, things couldn't be better.

I would love to see Washington play an even bigger role in this offense (i.e., take over the #2 spot), because he is proving to be very reliable..the guy seems to come through every time he's called upon.

We need to resign him, or he'll end up on the franchise tag!
