Flacco Vs Roethlisberger

88 posts in this topic

They are both good in their own right, but am I the only one that's a little sick of the comparisons?

To me, Flacco is really nothing like Roethlisberger. Roethlisberger is a scrambling bruiser of a quarterback while Flacco is more of a finesse type quarterback.

If you look at Big Bens stats at a game by game glance, he's normally something like 10 for 18 for 150 yards a score or so, most of which are out of the pocket.

Roethlisberger's long ball is nowhere near Flacco's and we're certainly starting to see Joe as a 250+ yard per game kind of guy.....something Roethlisberger will never average.

All this aside, the only comparison that I see worth mentioning is of course the size of the two - that's where the comparisons should stop.

Again, both good in their own right...just not similar players.

I can see what you mean with the size comparison, and we all know that Joe Flacco has a much better arm than Ben, but if I were to sit down and watch film on them, its just really hard for me to find any shared attributes.

I mean, they are rather similar in that they manage the game well, aren't rattled by pressure, and have a good presence in the pocket. The difference is basically in the schemes their teams run. The Steelers continue to be the smashmouth team they've always been, griding out yards and passing when needed. The Ravens have altered their offense a little to give Flacco more freedom, so you're right that now we can expect a lot of yards coming as a result of his arm and less from the running game. I think Flacco is more mobile than Roethlisberger and in the end I think FLacco will be all-around a better QB but I can see why the two would draw comparisons.

I'll stick to what I said last year....Flacco's like a Big Beth / Tom Brady hybrid.

Without the rape allegations and pretentiousness.

So.......you're agreeing with me or disagreeing?

You are responding to me as if I said they ARE smililar which is entirely the opposite of my thoughts.

I was agreeing with you, but also giving my own synopsis on what the thread title was referring to.

Like I said before. Flacco gets the stats, while all Berger gets is a TD in the 4th quarter and he is supposedly a top 5 QB?

Exactly, sure he can drive them down the field in the fourth, but i good quarterback keeps himself out of that situation.(Joe)

Other than the size, there really are no similarities between Jen and Joe. Joe is mobile in the pocket and is able to avoid the sack and buy some extra time, but nowhere near the extent of what Jen does. I attribute this discrepency to the Ravens having a much much better O-line than the Steelers, so Flacco actually has time to make his reads and make the throws. Now we just have to wait for the morons at EA to fix this in Madden lol.

I think its stupid hearing Ben fans gloating about how he has the most 4th Q comebacks since 2004. I would rather not put my QB in that situation but whatever works for them. Flacco and Company on the other hand (minus a few games) usually put the game away early.

Rothlisberger is one of the best "keep the play alive" QBs in the NFL. His style so far is way different than Flacco. You won't get an argument out of me on this one. You pretty much hit it on the head with everything.

I dislike the comparisons, probably because I dislike Roethlisberger. I love our offense now, we're gonna be a real handful... because our offense keeps us in games or dominates the game... I love the fact we already have a 2 game lead on Pittsburgh :D

Roethlisberger has two Superbowl rings and Flacco has none. Thats the only thing that I want to see change.

Physically they are similar but I think flacco is further along in his second year than Ben as far as a player. Ben is finding out how a bad line and running game can hurt you.

Because you're "sick of the comparisons" you make a thread entitled "Flacco vs Roethlisberger?"

:lol::lol:

I didn't want to point that out, lol

The comparisons come from their size and their ability to evade sacks and make plays outside of the pocket. As much as I hate Roethlisberger, when I saw Joe moving in the pocket to elude sacks, it did remind me very much of Big Baby Worthlisburger. The two are built similarly, very mobile for their size, and able to manage the game well.

Flacco is the better overall quarterback, accurate with short, medium, and long throws, and great decision making. Ben would only throw deep passes more often then not for years. And, honestly, that was never his forte. When it comes down to it, if the Ravens are able to keep the quality of the team as it is now for a couple of years, you could see Flacco having a couple of Super Bowls rings as well. Maybe even getting two faster then Ben did. Oh how sweet that would be. Then I could finally get Steeler fans to stop throwing around "Ben got two rings faster than any other quarterback".

Apples and Oranges: Ben's peaking, Joe's still getting better.

Don't get me wrong, Ben's ability to make keep plays alive and make plays gave them another trophy but Ben's going to be working the broadcast booth when Joe's in his prime.

I'd take Flacco hands down. Personally I think Flacco is much better than Ben. The only thing I would say Ben has over Flacco is the ability to keep his balance and not go down after being grabbed or touched a couple of times but still Flacco did that on a couple of occasions so it's really a no-brainer for me.
