Merged Kelley Washington Thread

Kelley Washington finally got a chance to break out his infamous “Squirrel Dance” in a regular-season contest.

After catching a 27-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Joe Flacco during Sunday's 31-26 win against the San Diego Chargers, Washington celebrated by doing the dance.

But after the game, Washington said he will shelve the dance for the remainder of the season.

"It’s all over," Washington said of the dance moves. "My teammates have been asking me to do it since I got here. I was just glad I was able to do it and execute it."

I really didn't mind dancing. It shows emotion to the game, and he really loves what he's doing. Guess hes hanging up the dancing shoes for the season now. Thoughts?

Kelley has played really the first two games of the season. I found the dance to be entertaining but if he doesn't want to do them anymore, fine.

I've never had a problem with touchdown celebrations period (minus T.O.'s more mean-spirited ones that ruined it for everyone else), but I think it's smart on Kelley Washington's part to play it safe. You don't want to risk an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty in a big game if there's a ref who particularly is biased against celebrations (or against the team, even.)

With that said, I liked the Squirrel Dance! Oh well...maybe if he scores a TD in garbage time and a potential penalty won't mean much. ;)

Kelley Washington was on fire in weeks 1 and 2. The question is, can he stay hot? He will still be getting plenty of receptions and yards for the rest of the season probably. But can he bet the 'Go to Guy?' Derrick Mason will likely be retiring at the end of the year, and Kelley's 1 year contract will be up. That leaves us with Mark Clayton. I think the Ravens will resign Washington though. Joe Flacco is young and is starting to throw the ball more. When Mason is gone, Washington and Clayton will have to be the two guys he will go to (and don't forget about Todd Heap). However, Heap is a tight end, so he will likely be Flacco's third man. For the 2010 Draft, the Ravens will probably go with a wide receiver first. They need a third receiver to go with Washington and Clayton. Although I think Washington could be the number one guy, we still can't leave out Todd Heap. They will probably let Demetrius Williams become a free agent. Meanwhile, Kelley Washington will have the best football season of his life so far this year.

I don't think we take a WR in the first next year, unless a stud falls into our lap. My money's on one of two DL.

Anyway, all my Clayton-bias aside, under no circumstances should he ever be our #1. I'm really not thrilled that he's even our #2 when we have Washington aboard.

I don't know that Kelley is true #1 material, we'll have to wait and see what he does. He certainly has potential, and of all the guys on our roster, I'd like to see him take over for Mace.

How I see this playing out is we'll let McGahee walk after this year, and some of that money will probably be used to pick up a mid-level WR from free agency (maybe even Braylon if he hits the market.)

If we let McGahee go we better pick up a back, cuz as much as i like Rice and the options he brings, I just cant see Rice running into the teeth of the Steelers with much success.

i dont see him becoming the number 1 but i can see him staying with us for years to come.

I think we have become way to enamored with this #1 WR stuff. How about the open WR or the WR that makes the catch when needed. He can be 4, 5, 6, just catch the ball. Today I heard someone on the radio complaining that Drew Brees does not have a true #1 WR, with the #'s he puts up year after year it prove that #1 WR thing is over rated.

Drew Brees is like Tom Brady where he makes the receivers around him work. Only a talented QB could make a 7th-round pick into a #1 WR (Marques Colston) and have an undrafted free agent be a solid #2 or #3 (Lance Moore.)

There are only a handful of true #1 WRs in the NFL, so a superstar WR (though helpful) is merely a luxury; it's far better to have a solid corps of no-names than just one guy making all the plays, especially when injuries enter the equation.

After the start of last year I thought we would let McGahee walk as well but he really worked hard in the off season and is playing well as of now. If hes still playing the way he is, and as dedicated as he seems right now...I'd hate to lose him and our three headed running attack.

I'm sure there are times when Brees makes Colston look good but Colston is a very talented receiver who routinely makes highlight-reel grabs.

I agree with your second point. Look at what happened to Houston and New England in two of their games this year. With Andre Johnson and Moss being locked up by Revis, neither team was able to move the ball through the air. That's where a guy like Kelley becomes really valuable. He finds soft spots in zones and is big and athletic enough to work the middle.

I absolutely don't want to lose Willis either.....just going to be very hard to afford him. But who knows, maybe we do resign him; maybe he'll surprise us and not demand as much as he's worth.

Oh no him dancing after tds are entertaining they need to put him as the number 1 and put mason as the number 2 i dont care what they do with clayton bench him for the rest of the seasoun. But back to kelly dancing he shouldn't give up the dancing unless we are in a close game in the 4th quarter or in a situation where we cant afford a penalty.

yeah as of week 2, i think he is one of our most productive recievers grabbing every ball thrown his direction (7 targets, 7 receptions) for 101 yards and a score.

I think the gentleman on Defense who did that horrible dance after we stopped the Cheifs on their last drive shouldnt dance anymore. If you saw that dance, you wont have to guess what his name is. (the dance was that baaaaad)

What I liked about the dance is that it was just that, a dance. There was no taunting or mocking the other team. He was just having fun and doing a silly dance to amuse the audience. I'm sure K Washington is playing it safe. What happened to NOT calling "unsportsmanlike conduct" on TD dances?

They call that when you have an orchestrated celebration involving multiple players.
Fred's right, although referees are still allowed to call it when they see fit; that's where the rule's subjective nature becomes problematic. The most specific (laymen's terms) interpretation of the rule I remember is, you can't spike the ball in the field of play, the ball is never to leave the ground in an aerial display, you're not allowed to use props, and you are never to taunt a player.
