Mangini Fined Browns Player $1,701 For Bottle Of Water

17 posts in this topic

Per The National Football Post, in response to published reports:

[quote]Cleveland Browns coach Eric Mangini didn't deny a report that he fined a player $1,701 for failing to pay for a $3 bottle of water at his hotel room.

Mangini has also reportedly fined a player an identical figure for not paying for a movie charged to a hotel room.

Facing heavy criticism for what seems to be a nitpicking nature, Mangini refused to apologize for setting high standards of personal conduct from his players.

This is ridiculous. I understand holding players to the same civic standards you'd hold other people, but to fine a player that amount for failure to pay a hotel charge???? Why not just have them go back and pay the charge and accept responsibility? Maybe pay the charge and pay a small fine? How did Mangini even reach $1,701 in accessing the fine????

I mean, there's discipline, then there's just plain having a power trip.

How about Coughlin's "If you're not 5 minutes early to a meeting you're late" policy? I actually heard it's now 11 minutes!

Mangini is an idiot.

Coughlin, by all accounts, has lightened up. He's also gotten his team to the playoffs either every year or all but one year that he's been there -and- brought home the Lombardi. He has WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY more ground to stand on than Mangini.

I wonder if Mangini is going to fine the Browns the next time a player gets staph????

High standard of personal conduct? I wonder if that applies to injury reports.

The Browns never cease to entertain me, they fire a mediocre-at-best coach so they could hire another mediocre-at-best coach. Smart move

I'm all about a coach wanting to instill discipline in his players because it is something we've lacked for several years now but this does seem excessive.

I guess they'll think twice before ordering movies and drinking water.. those heartless savages.

This is a stroke of genius by Mangini to bring the hammer down on those Browns players. They've lacked discipline and it's time Coach Mangini has brought it to them. You need to understand to show good character and be a responsible person, or else you're going to pay the price... and the price is $1,698.

You want to shoplift a 75 cent snickers bar? Have at it. You'll end up paying $1,698.75 for that 75 cent snickers bar.
You want to try to skip out on paying your $35 restaurant bill. Sure. You'll end up paying $1,733 for that $35 dinner.
You want to use that little bar of complimentary soap that hotels give you. Sure, but you'll end up paying $1,698 for that complimentary soap.

You cannot be a Brown and take advantage of people!

gotta agree with you on this! Fran, I don't thinking having them go back to pay the charge and accepting responsibility is going to do anything. You've got to send a message to these dudes and this is a great way, hit em where it hurts most.

But how does this help them on the football field? If Mangini's about instilling discipline, why not have them do extra drills in practice or things of that nature? A blow to their wallet means nothing for the most part (even though I still think the fines are excessive), but teaches nothing about discipline except to the unproven guys who NEED the paychecks more.

I like the extra drills part. Whynot have them run in a custom hot pink jersey that says "PRINCESS" on it in a media press practice and have them run a few miles? A little humility goes a long way.

I'll add to it. Throw in a pink ballerina tutu type skirt with white stockings and their Browns helmet. That'll look hot!
