San Diego's Radio Play-By-Play

Hey everybody. I was listening to the Ravens/Chargers game on Sirius, and I was on the San Diego feed, for no apparent reason, but the more I heard, the more I HAD to listen.

The "color" guy, Hank Bauer (or is it Bower?) was making comments at the Ravens' expense, and I was getting unbelievably pissed. He started complaining every time there was a penalty on SD, and I mean EVERY TIME. Then, when Kelly Washington scored his TD and did his dance, Mr. Bauer lost it! He started popping-off about Kelly, and the the guy- ON AIR- calls Kelly a "dope." I kid you not that there was a lot of hostility in those words, too. I have never heard a grown man, a "professional," cry like a frigging baby. But I'm glad that I at least got to watch the game, especially knowing now that toolbox shut his fat mouth. I almost forgot: ol' boy was making fun of our CB's also, calling them shrimps and making fun every chance he got.

Thanks for reading.

Possibly.

Tell you what though, I would hang my head in shame if one of our people did that.
You know how every once in a while someone does or says something so awkward that YOU feel embarrassed? That's how I feel when these guys act like that on air/TV. I like talking smack as much as the next guy, but then again, I'm not a public figure /* <-- collective sigh of relief from the civilized world  */

Like I said, he didn't use the word "dope." He said worse. If only you could've heard the tones he was using; a straight-up toolbox.

I watched the SD game on Sunday Ticket here in eastern Ontario and I was ready to throw up. CBS should be ashamed of Dan Fouts and the other guy (can't remember his name) doing the play-by-play. According to the CBS guys, SD could do no wrong. When the refs threw their flags against SD, you heard excuses after excuses on how bad that call was by the ref and that the play didn't warrant a flag but GOD forbid the Ravens get a flag .... oh brother!
I hope we don't get those 2 CBS losers ever, ever doing one of our next games. Today was a "CBS tribute to Philip Rivers". I call it "Tribute to the real human Ken doll"! B)

Nice win though, man Ray Lewis is an animal!!!! GO RAVENS!!!!

I was just about to say that. I was getting pissed with fouts. Way to go CBS put Fouts on a chargers game with a play by play guy who called Mcgahee Rice and couldnt get anyne elses name right either. There were a lot of examples like that, the clipping (that was an obvious clip), Roughing the passer agaisnt us at the end of the first half (cant make that call to guarentee the chargers a score at the end of the half), and the running into the kicker just to name a few.

I was watching the game with a lot of people so I couldn't really hear the commentary but it doesn't surprise me. Will I sit here and say that we didn't get away with a couple pass interference calls? No, because we did. But I can also recall a few instances where they missed a big call or two against them.

One notably was the non call on SD for pass interference in the end zone against one of their WR's. You could see our CB's jersey being pulled down and the ref was right there but he didn't call it. Maybe he though the ball was uncatchable but he should have still thrown the flag.

CBS is great for getting over on us with their commentators. Does anyone remember who one of our Superbowl announcers was? CBS decides to let Phil Simms do commentary for a Ravens/Giants Superbowl. No bias there huh? It doesn't even phase me anymore.

It was a physical game all in all. We got away with a win and Dan Fouts can go cry about it with Phillip Rivers in the locker room.

This was one of those games that a team like the Ravens needs to win. All that matters in the end is wins and losses and we just went up against one of the best QB's in the league at their home opener. I'll take that!

Do we really expect anything diffrent? Thats ok we are 2-0 with an offense and a Defense that will get the job done. You can talk all you want about the total offense they had especially in the passing game but what did the do in the red zone or with the game on the line. Nothing we shut them down. ESPN, CBS, or any radio announcers can say what they want, but We the fans of this great team no whats really up.

I happen to agree with that statement. Washington needs to cut that crap out or he is going to get called for excessive celebration and potentially put us in a bad spot. Imagine if he pulls that stuff against the Steelers when the refs are looking for anything to throw a flag on us.

Harbaugh needs to put an end to it, or I promise you it will come back to bite us at the wrong time.

I don't mind it. If he wants to do a stupid dance after he scored a TD, then I'm fine with that. Just as long as everyone else stays back and lets him do his thing, it will be just fine. I hope he dances his rear end off this year because that means 6 points a dance!

The only thing I think he needs to cut out is the first down dancing. It's a first down, get over it and get back to the huddle.

Also, ummmm, has anyone seen Demetrius Williams? He seems to be MIA?

Haven't listened to it but I will later today on field pass.
I listened to their broadcast of them playing Oakland earlier this week and the guy was going off on Russell saying stuff like "JaMarcus Russell you Suck" etc.
A real jerk.

dont feel bad, ravens fans. everyone in san diego knows what a homer hank bauer (correct spelling) is. the fact is, he was a special teams guy with the chargers during the fouts years and we know what a tool he can be.

congrats on the win, no whining or crying from here. the refs were absolutely horrible for BOTH teams, were kinda getting used to it here in SD.

great game and we look forward to seeing you in the playoffs. (that is if our coach can pull his head outta his rear. really norv? 4th and 2 and you call run up the gut? with the smallest guy in the league? dork.)

you guys won and deserved it.

until next time.

Thanks for keeping it classy, San Diego and good game to you as well.

I'll be wearing my Ngata jersey on Sunday. Hopefully I don't run into Dan Fouts, who seems to have an obsession with saying Nga-T-a.

I have actually always been a semi-fan of the Chargers, just because of the players they've had over the years. I became a football fan in the Dan Fouts, John Jefferson, Kellen Winslow, and "Air" Coryell years, so I don't have a beef with the team. I've never gotten angry over an announcer before but, after listening to Hank Bauer, I was disgusted. By the way, Sproles is awesome, and the Ravens should keep using Ray Rice the same way.

Kelley Washington can Squirrel Dance to his heart's content, it means 6 points for us, plus I think he's hilarious. I was yelling at Dan Fouts and whatever that second guy's name is all day. I liked when Flacco threw the TD to Heap and there was a flag, Fouts IMMEDIATELY said "That's probably a hold on Baltimore." Did he choose not to see their pass rusher try to take Oher's head off? Victories like this are especially sweet to me because 1) Phillip Rivers is a toolshed, 2) it shuts up INCREDIBLY slanted commentary. By the way, it was the short-comings of the Chargers' O that they couldn't produce, not the clutch play of the Raven's D lol.

Not to mention his dance is fully legal/ If refs punish that they will be wrong. he does not go to the ground or use props and he does it by himself. So it is within the guidelines. The first down conversions are a bit excessive in that a player should be accustomed to making those plays. But I like the excitement he brings to the game. I think it inspires the team. Just my opinion.

I agree.. . Im not much for a player doing it to rub it in the other teams face, but washington seems to do it b/c he is having fun. I remember when ray ray was asked if he could describe himself in one word and I beleive he said "entertaianer". Just sayin....

I don't necessarily blame some announcers for letting a little bias leak into their announcing/commentary. People like Aikman, Steve Young, the Sharpe brothers, Bradshaw, Simms, Fouts and Collinsworth spent years, working/sweating/bleeding for their teams. I don't think I could "turn off" my allegiance 100%, no matter how I tried, in their situations.

As long as it isn't blatant - like Joe Theismann and Bill Walsh (R.I.P.).

I read from Mike Preson or somebody in the paper that he's in the coaches' doghouse for lack of work ethic.

If a guy put in 12 lbs. of muscle in the offseason, why would he start slacking when it counts? T'would be strange.

Another reason is the emergence of Kelley Washington, and the fact that we also like to split out Ray Rice and Todd Heap. Maybe we know he's only good for a few games a year and are saving him for the crucial ones. Who knows?

The other, non-Fouts guy was Dick Enberg, or looked and sounded just like him. He covers most of the tennis majors, too.

The ultimate villain of anti-Baltimore broadcasting is Bob Costas. When the Orioles went down in that infamous "Jeffrey Maier" series vs. the Yanks in '97 or whatever, he went off about, "This is why I don't like the Wild Card System. Sometimes you get these post season matchups, and it's so obvious that one team doesn't deserve to be in the same ballpark as the other," when we were clearly equal if not better and just had crap luck.

In all seriousness, what a loser. Some people are so immature, I hope he is still fuming over the loss, serves the poor sport right.

Like flynismo said, I would be embarassed to be associated with that if someone from the Ravens was behaving like that.

That's the key for me. I fully expect a player to be excited that he made a touchdown and to celebrate that fact, but rubbing it in the other team's faces is a no-no for me. I hate poor sportmanship [although I used to have problems in that area, myself].

And I love that Ray described himself as an entertainer.
