Your Opinion On A Scoring Issue

12 posts in this topic

When the Redskins Pulled off the fake field goal and scored a touchdown. Do you think the Redskins D/ST should get the points for that or not. Is it considered a special teams play?

It is a win loss situation for 2 teams in my league and wanted to get some of your opinions on this..

thats tough.. i'd say take a league vote.. if you have D/ST as one player, and a kicker at another i would say no, but if field goals are counted as points for your D/ST, then i'd say give em the points

Thanks zibby I am the swing vote here and you are pretty much in line with all other 3rd party answers...It makes sense to me to say no. However like you said it a tough one because i guess technically it is special teams

I'd say yes, because kicking is ST... but there would be too many points going on for D's with phenomenal kickers...

back to the point, the fake calls rely on the whole team, whether blocking recieving etc... i know you can argue that so does kicking

Its absolutely a special teams play. Redskins should get 6 for the TD, and Giants should get negative points for their d/st giving up the TD.

If you are asking whether the kicker should get points for scoring, that is irrelevant b/c the holder(punter) scored the TD.

Here's another thing to think about. The Ravens got negative points for having giving up a TD on the blocked punt, and KC's d/st got points for it.
Whats the difference if it was a blocked FG returned for a TD? Kickoffs, punts, field goals, and free kicks are all special teams plays for which the d/st should be awarded points if there is a score on one of those plays.

And in some leagues, the player should be awarded the points as well (i.e. if the punter fakes it, and he's also the teams kicker, both he and the DST should receive the points)

How can you have a punter? I dont think Ive ever seen a league where you pick punters.
Now if the kicker himself ran it in, then thats a tough one, but I still gotta say its points for the d/st only because of the nature of the play and the fact that kickers only really should get points for FGs and XPs.

I say no. If you have a Kicker position and a Def/S.T. you only get credit for FG's that the kicker you have starting and you do not get points when that kicker is part of your Def/S.T. and he is not your starting Kicker. You would end up with double credit for FG's and extra points if you count the FG's and extra points for your Def/ST as well as your starting Kicker.

I look at the play as a offensive play from a special teams formation and the only time you would hear some one question about those points would be in a tight game.

Ive never seen one player kick and punt...Ive seen the punter do kickoffs on occasion as a backup, but not FGs.

Yes, Redskins D/ST should be credited with the 6 points. When either kicking or receiving a punt, both teams have their ST on the field. If a returner runs it all the way back, thats 6 pts for the ST so why when a ST uses a fake and scores 6 points as a result of that play, why wouldn't the ST be credited with the 6 pts?
